As eSysman previously reported, this vessel had been extensivly modified by increasing the length frrom 32M to 48 meters. An increase of this magnitude is significant. Also an additional deck was added to allow a helo touch and go pad. Incresing the hull length and adding another deck both have an adverse effect on lateral stability. Unless the forward crash bulkhead had been left open, this ship should have remained afloat and stable. It will be interesting to find out what the final report will say.

At first I thought the owner of the capsized yacht was the one who perished. 🤪 Both things are tragic, but certainly the loss of life puts the loss of the sunken yacht in perspective. I'm relieved to hear both dogs were OK, and for that matter, the bird as well. Your graphic with the red outline of where the salon windows are is very helpful to understand how serious the situation was. I imagine it would also be difficult to steer under those conditions. Good for whomever was on the bridge for avoiding the other vessels at anchor and making it to the sandbar. Glad to know one of the problematic red tape or passport things affecting workers in the industry is getting resolved. It's been a tough time, especially for crew, and workers in the industry.

Did some research since the last time this was mentioned. I had to define "Super yacht" so I chose 35mtrs upwards and the level of damage being a total loss. Year on the average number hovers around 12 per year so 2022 is no different from any other year since 2014. What has increased is the number of engineering and design failures in the last few years possibly caused by the desire to push the technical boundaries further than what is currently possible. Super yachts are hideously complex pieces of engineering and the more complex they get the easier it is for a system to fail.

Would it be fair to state that the ship was already taking on water when entering the bay and aimed for sandbank/beach to reach shallowest possible water on purpose? **IF** that were the case, would one expect the ship to have radioed an SOS once decision was made to run aground instead of sink? Or would a private yacht typically remain silent on radio and focus on the emergency ? Is runnig aground on purpose purely life saving technique (more time to evacuate ship that won't completely sink) or or there some chance that if lucky the ship is salvageable?
@seandelaney17002 жыл бұрын
That wasn't my first thought, but certainly possible. If your going to ground it you have time to radio later. Like Scully focusing on landing in the Hudson River and ignoring the radio. Lives are not really in that much peril next to shore in calm seas, grounding is more about salvaging the ship. Imagine if it just needed rebuilt engines, systems, wiring, inexpensive crew quarters etc. as opposed to beautiful interiors higher up. And if it sinks it's either more expensive or impossible to salvage.

Big sympathy for the Skipper of MY 007 - been there... Alright it was on a 38 foot sailing boat not a multi million Gin Palace, but the concerns were the same. Racing back from the Nab Tower to Cowes one year a crew mate reported that the saloon was knee deep in water and getting deeper (I thought we had slowed down!). A slight course correction and we were heading straight for Bembridge Beach, I was going to ram the boat as far into the Isle of Wight as I possibly could. Fortunately, before we hit solid one of the crew found the cause of the ingress - a flexi hose popped off the through hull fitting for the bilge pumps - and fixed it. Boat and crew lived to fight another day.

Great video as always. I know little about pleasure craft practices, but in the U.S. Navy the Captain was always on the bridge when entering or leaving port. The ship was conned by the Officer of the Deck, but the Captain was there. As to bulkheads: even if Turkish standards do not require more water-tight bulkheads could the prospective owner, the one paying for the ship to be built, specify additional barriers? It seems to be a good idea. Thank you for teaching us more about craft none of us ordinary folk could hope to own.

A concerned owner could be involved from the moment pen hits the paper in the design process. His input would be constrained by marine building standards but he could have major input to the design and any marine architect would go along with an owner who wanted to exceed safety standards as long as the cheque book was open. If the yacht was going to be used for chartering safety could be a major factor for some customers.

A correction to you’re statements regarding watertight bulkheads, there would be at least collision bulkhead located near the bow, one at either end of the engine room and possibly and aft peak bulkhead depending on the location of the aft engine room bulkhead. I expect the damage & hole seen on the bulbous bow be forward of the collision bulkhead so would be unlikely to have caused this sinking alone, I would guess this is additional damages to the hull aft of the collision bulkhead. To note I would have expected this vessel to have sufficient reserve stability/buoyancy to survive damage to one compartment (space between watertight bulkheads).
@YachtReport2 жыл бұрын

@@YachtReport I refer you to 4I34 in the video, you state if there is any water ingress Infront of the engine room the water is going to be uninterrupted and fill the boat up. @chrisbetts61942 жыл бұрын
At least you you would think the space leads to a space with a water tight door.
@normanboyes49832 жыл бұрын
It is normally closed off within the bow penetration - so yea the bulbous section can free flood but that is no threat to the integrity of stability. This yacht sank because the damage occurred to the hull (the side now resting on the sandbar) the free flood of large spaces destroyed the transverse stability because of the free surface effect which destroyed GM and the righting lever.

Hi, the Turkish rules for the watertight Bulkheads is very similar to the rules of other class societies and flagstates. This rules part that you showed is just the minimum requirement for watertight Bulkheads. In the end the real number of Watertight bulkheads is triggered by the fact that the yachts have to fulfill a damage stability that proofs the yachts can survive the flooding of at least one compartment.

With conversions of an older vessel there may be various accepted items and equivalences that are considered by the approving authority, so some care needed to work it all out.. ..Of course there may have been a simple problem with water ingress (weeping gland/flange, cracked manifold, bottom damage, corrosion pinhole, etc..) and the yacht headed for the shallows, but lifted as touched the bottom and then destabilising, add some free surface movement and voila, capsize, or downflooding points immersed and flooding to further bodily sinking until lying on the bottom. It is possible to dream up several scenarios and consequences. It's interesting that she is lying on her side virtually exactly 90 degrees and horizontal, so assume lying on her side on the bottom, but once vents are long term immersed then it will all flood over time.

Stalled, the loss of lift, aircraft generally become bricks, they don't glide (no lift) and nearly always don't miss hitting what is beneath them. But I get what you meant.
@NickKautz2 жыл бұрын
@@dirtyeric One would think the pilot could get the nose pitched down due to the weight of the plane being biased forward.... but the wings will also have a ton of vertical wind resistance, possibly preventing the nose from dropping any faster than the tail. And the plane also probably wants to enter a spiraling motion which seems to have the effect of keeping the plane level, and thus the controls useless. There would have to be a seperate mechanism for emergency stall escape.
@dirtyeric2 жыл бұрын
@@NickKautz yes provided one had the time and altitude to perform the standard stall recovery actions. Sadly many of this year's, in my opine excessive, PPL fatal crashes have been stall related on take off.

An interesting video again from the very well informed channel. I was glad to hear your comments on the Captain and Crew who look to have gone to extraordinary efforts to save vessel and life under difficult circumstances. Most all industry experts will tell you there is a multitude of issues which can lead to a major incident many seemingly unbelievable to some despite the very best preparations pre passage. Thankfully these are rare instances.

The title and the thumbnail need to match the video. They do. The title is divided into two stories, the second matches the thumbnail.

I bartended on Palm Beach. A captain of a yacht told me that the wealthy people rarely travel on their yachts. He said that they don't have the time to spend days on a yacht going to the destination. They just fly to the island and live on it. I thought it was kind of weird until I thought about. If they have that kind of money they are constantly working.

The hole you circled is the small one in that photo. that's on what looks to be frame 3, but frame 2 has a massive tear in it. if that one is in the 3-4" category, I'd guess that crack is more like a foot on frame 2. the skin is folding up and over the frame and is obscuring most of the damage, but it looks to be almost completely across that frame in the caved-in section (I'm not a boat person, I'm just a welder, so my scale is probably way off, but that crack is definitely 4x-6x of the circled hole) not to mention that big monker right on the tip. that looks like a fist size hole from initial impact, then the momentum pushed it along the rest of the bow
@otm6462 жыл бұрын
4:08 for other people reading. I absolutely agree, it looks like there is substantial damage forward of the area he highlighted. With that much area open to the sea and no sealable bulkhead even salvage pumps aren't going to keep you afloat.

@saykouss2 жыл бұрын
True, we too have a spotter at the bow at all times when entering areas were not familiar with
@RiverWoods1112 жыл бұрын
@@darthkek1953 Sonar isn't perfect! Most sonar looks straight down. There are some that shoot out in front, but it is not exact. A lot of yachts will have spotters out on the bow, but at night that would be awfully hard. Most captains don't like to go into a port at night, but sometimes it takes longer to get to where you are wanting to go. Not as bad with MY as SY, but weather and other things can slow them down. Oh, and there are also things like shipping containers just floating under the surface of the water that one can hit too. It is rare to hit one, but there are those types of things that can hit also.

Thanks for the follow up. On the grounding attempt, would it have made a difference trying to go stern in to beach it? Or, it was going to roll 90deg regardless? Good to know the pets and people were all saved. That has got to be the freakiest thing have happen in the night on a beach. As for the swimmers, put a sign up telling them, sure, the fuel floats, but not the waste in the toilet tanks - problem solved. Sad about the guy from India, he sure did know how to pick a sharp looking vessel.

Sounds like she hit a rock in the poorly surveyed area, started taking on water (given how low she was in the waterline by the eyewitness), and by the time the captain realised what was going on it was too late to prevent a full sinking, hours away from coast guard and so purposefully ran aground on a fairly gentle sandbar near the port.
