The future of luxury yachting is here. Silent yachts have developed a luxury yacht which can comfortably be operated without consuming a single drop of fossil fuel. Thats right, this yacht runs on the suns energy through its array of solar panels combined with a big battery bank deep in the hull of the vessel. We are joined by Werner from silent yachts to explain how it all works.

I think there is some misunderstanding of the SOLAR SYSTEM in general. The system was not designed for LINEAR CONSUMPTION, meaning, just charge and go, with no charging along the way, and only charging on the endpoints. Obviously, if you were cruising on just one single charge alone your range would be significantly limited, just like EV's are today. A SILENT 55 yacht can cruise up to 100 miles a day WITHOUT FUEL, meaning on batteries alone with NO SUN and NO Generator. But can cruise permanently featuring virtually unlimited range because the SILENT solar power systems feed the electric propulsion of the catamarans (short term speed up to 20kn) and all household energy needs. The system is designed to continually charge with NO overcharging, the system is smart, it checks each battery and each cell, only charging where and when it is necessary. Therefore, while you are cruising during the day, the SUN is your primary POWER SOURCE, all day long. If cloudy during the day or cruising at night, the backup generator can kick in automatically for a very short time to charge the batteries and keep them at max capacity to keep you going on long passages. This is how you get unlimited transoceanic cruising distances. However, with the sun AND and with a Generator on board, the batteries are efficiently being charged continuously which allows for a full unlimited range. At maximum power, the maximum capacity of the batteries will only last approximately 4 hours. However, the system is designed to automatically kick in the generator to keep the batteries charged up if the sun is not doing so. The system is designed to use the Sun power generation first and the Genset power second to keep the batteries charged up at all times. I recommend you take a look at the Philosophy and Technology page on their website as it explains things better than I can and will probably clear up alot of questions you may have about how the system works. Also please check out their illustration of power generation and consumption, it's a fascinating video that shows how the system works. 1. Philosophy and Technology: www.silent-yachts.com/silent-yachts/ 2. Energy generation and Consumption: www.silent-yachts.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/2019_SY_Energieversorung_English.mp4.mp4?_=1 The Silent 55 is a million-dollar Yacht, so they spare no expense in getting the best technology money can buy and they back it all up with guarantees above and beyond industry standards. The Electric motors have a LIFETIME GUARANTEE, the Solar Panels have a 25-year guarantee and the Batteries have an 8-year guarantee. Max power would only be used in emergency situations as needed, like trying to battle a fierce current, trying to maneuver out of the way of a larger ship, or in a marina, or trying to outrun a major storm or squall, all of which are usually short term endeavors. And most will not mind the automated system using the quiet generator over 2 very noisy and loud diesel engines any day. Also, they are using the top of the line solar panels and batteries right now, and they stand behind them with guarantees, so you never have to worry. In real-life practical experience, the SY 55 traveled across the Atlantic on full Solar with only 3-5 hours of generator used to charge the batteries and keep the boat going at around an average 10 knots, which is faster than the average sailboat that averages around 6 knots. The Silent Yacht Solar System is an amazing system and is taking the cruising world by storm.

I think this whole "zero emissions & good for environment" push does little to an industry thats 90% a floating party house what they should push forward is the notion that this thing has essentially infinite range and needs almost 0 maintenance and no refueling at all, meaning if it has a watermaker you could live on it on the middle of nowhere, indefinitely, no reliance on the world, heck you could run the AC and cook all you want while anchored at 0 cost forever, that is a much bigger selling point if you ask me, for many people a yacht is just a ridiculous non ending expense, but this changes everything, this could be a much better home than your usual brick box stuck on earth

(although I'm also a gearhead, and have been involved in racing since I was a kid) It is so simple. Like you said, there is no gearbox, or reciprocating parts. To go backwards you just rotate the motor in the opposite direction. I can't wait to see what Silent Yachts and others come up with in the next couple years. I think electric propulsion in general will be a revolution in the coming years.

For sure graphics at the end are very optimistic. There is so many power appliances on a boat, one can't tell how many of them will be used at any moment. Worst case scenario, a week of bad weather in the middle of the ocean. Stationary the batteries can be topped from the generator for 1.5 h according to the specifications. Let's say the generator needs to run for 3h a day on average on a cross ocean trip instead of 24h. It reduces the fuel consumption eight times, not to mention low maintenance of one diesel engine which was used eight times less during the life spam of the boat instead of two running 24\7. This yacht has a very sweet option, which i really want to see in action. Kite sail is something which in perfect conditions can reduce the use of the generator to zero.

It's a great concept and with better battery technology coming out it can be upgraded in the future too. Should point out, the bigger the yacht the less performance it will have because the surface area for the solar cells will decrease as a proportion of weight/volume. I notice with interest that the Wider diesel-electric boats and this one both use MAN generators. I think the new MAN engines up to 2000 HP are the biz. Rudolf Diesel developed his engine in conjunction with MAN by the way.

Interesting. Just comparing the silent 55 and 80, ratio of tones displacement to solar kilowatt hours, on the 55 the ratio is 1.9 and in the 80 the ratio is 2.11. So the 80 is less energy producing per weight. OTOH the 80 can be had with two generators, etc.

The type of technology in that is essentially the same as modern massive cruise ships, tankers, and freighters, a deisel motor powering a generator which powers an electric motor. It's not quite 100% all electric but diesel electric is deffietly alot more efficient and eco friendly compared to deisel connected to a gear box also it's nice to see this technology being used on more of a consumer level in the yacht world

Wind Turbine Generators are an OPTION as it is on ALL boats, totally doable, no problem!!! I would have them for sure on my boat. Also, they do have a KITE and SAIL option for those that want to use the WIND. I for one love the idea of a KITE as that is FAR easier to maintain and use, no rigging per se and its far more efficient as it flies at 100-150 meters up and has more sail area than a normal sailboat.
@StephenKellyQLD
@StephenKellyQLD 4 жыл бұрын
Small low windmills, which is all that is possible on a yacht, are very inefficient and there is a lot of turbulence, especially over water, under 200 feet high. So for how much power they would add relative to the Solar Panels / Generator they would not be worth the cost / maintaince overhead.
@MichaelBuck
@MichaelBuck 4 жыл бұрын
@@StephenKellyQLD I would like to see some real stats on that analysis. I think the newer models are far more efficient than the older ones from say 5 years ago. Also, I know the props will provide regenerative power to charge the batteries. Because of this, I will be looking at the "Kite" option they have, this way, when following trade winds I can launch the kite and turn off the electric motors and use the props to regenerate the batteries. See the Kite Boat Systems model Wing Commander RC - www.kite-boat-systems.com/index.php/de/produkte/kitecontroller-fuer-elektroboote The kite flies at windier heights of 25 to 150 meters and pulls the boat with up to 10 times the power of an equally sized sail. At the heart of the system is a kite control system with electronic control, which makes the control of the kite easy. It can be installed inboard or outboard in different boat types. The kite is controlled by joystick or autopilot from any part of the boat.

Best to call these diesel electric. Even with that massive array, you’re limited to short daily coastal hops from batteries at about 4knots for max distance. To cross oceans you need the diesel for hours a day and 4 knots doesn’t give you much ability to escape weather. The boats can go much faster, of course, but at exponentially higher energy use (same with a traditional power boat. Speed is very expensive.)
@EssentialParadox
@EssentialParadox 4 жыл бұрын
Roger, I think so,e of your figures might be off. There is an animation about halfway in the video showing example scenarios - basically, you can travel at 6-7 knots all day and all night without generator, or 10 knots for a few hours and no sun, with generator kicking in to recharge batteries (which I understand it can do to full capacity in 1-2 hrs). When they made their maiden Atlantic crossing, they said they only used minimal fuel and could’ve made the crossing with none at all if they didn’t have to get to the Miami boat show in a short amount of time. They’ve also spoke about feedback from some of the first owners who say they only turn on their generators for annual maintenance purposes. They also have the option of an auto-controller kite-sail, which seems a helpful option if you want speed on long passages. I guess it ultimately depends on trade-offs that you’re willing to make. I’m happy to go on a bit slower (6-7 knots is plenty for me) of a journey to be more eco-friendly, and only use the generator in emergency conditions. I’d also personally get a larger battery bank so I can store a few days worth of power if it’s bad weather (but even cloudy days can generate a decent amount of solar power).
@RogerWilco1
@RogerWilco1 4 жыл бұрын
Luke My numbers were optimistic there. The actual numbers are worse. The exact figures are quoted by the CEO in the “yachts for sale” channels interview. That claim about not using fuel to cross the Atlantic is a broker lie, or they were crowding at 4knots. The animation is not precise and not an accurate measure of capacity or charge rates, it’s just an example of how the system works. If you want to make a specific claim about numbers then talk about boat speed, the required kilowatt hours, the amount harvested by the sun etc. If you want to go 7-8 knots in a Silent 55, even with full sun you will be running the generator all the time.

Are marinas set up for the size of beam this boat has? Do you have to pay double the mooring fees? Be careful here. Solar power generation is not linear. When the sun comes out in the morning it does not have sufficient strength to 'fire up the system. As the sun rises it gets stronger - as your suntan will attest - to a point where it is a viable enegy source. Trouble is, the sun doesn't always shine strong enough even though it is out. That is why whenever these boats' operation is talked about, it's always in the Med. Me thinks the diesel generator will be on more times than off in the more northern climes. If you have solar panels on your house you will know what i'm talking about.

Forget the impact of making the panels, and the 8 year drop off of the panels efficiency (like 80%), and the manufacturing of the batteries, maintenance of said, and that they will last maybe as long as the panels. Further if you get in a storm, the panels crack or get destroyed by ice. I've looked at ALL types of alternative energy. Nothing comes close to the oil for efficiency. Just add the initial cost, longevity, environmental impact, durability, and running cost (including electric, heat/cooling, pumps, etc.. We all know that the most efficient is sailing (wind - currently), however, of all the rest, diesel-electric would be the best of all worlds (although less durable / reliable than straight engine-to-screw). I would love a REASONABLE alternative to oil, but right now, none exists.

So much wrong here. Solar panels only degrade 10% in 25 years. Electric motors don't need any maintenance. Ice doesn't crack solar panels. (My solar panels have survived many feet of snow and ice for the past 5 years.) Diesel wastes 80% of the energy.

@scottce6745
@scottce6745 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. It can circumnavigate. You can nearly cruise at 5 knots 24/7 on solar alone running the diesel generator just a bit after a cloudy day. That days batteries wouldnt last the night. So, maybe 40-60 min gen time at 50% throttle. Or, you could run the gen more and cruise at 7 knots. Or run the gen alot and do it at possibly 8.5 knots. That 5 knot 24/7 gets a passage done pretty much the same as an average sail. 5 knot in a straight line is making pretty good time with the added bonus of not beating your boat during your highest winds. No engine maintenance and a 25 year warranty. No rigging to replace, lines, windlasses, starter, alternator, plugs, ignition, filters, lines, water separator. I could go on................lots of perks but if you are a sailor, that is a deal breaker for sure.

It takes a solar panel 15 years to be carbon neutral (to off set its production) how is he judging carbon neutral? Considering the resources expended in the rest of the yachts construction and components parts, batteries used rare earth materials and so on. They will never be neutral. Best try hydrogen electric plus solar wave and wind. Still only the comparison to petrol for pollution not the rest of it.
@charlespickering2726

Do you really want to compare carbon footprints over something like this compared to an all diesel boat if you want to add in production/fuel exploration/extraction/pipelines/transoceanic transhipping of fossile fuels as well as all that goes into the making of the engines themselves?. Just because solar is not perfect does not mean it is not better than the alternative. The fact that a decade ago a boat like this would not even have been viable at all shows how fast this stuff is coming along.

The cruiser has two 30 kW electric motors. The more powerful version has two 80 kW electric motors. The battery pack is 240 kW hours, which can run the cruiser at full speed for 4 hours (3 with air conditioning running). This boat isn’t going to win any speed races. But it will cruise along at sail boat speeds indefinitely, weather permitting.

Acting like you can run forever on solar alone is complete BS, the numbers just don't add up. The panels make 10kw at peak efficiency which translates to 13.4hp which is not enough to move a boat this size at any reasonable speed and barely enough to cover AC and house electrics on a boat this size without the engines going. This boat may be fine for going out for a few hours and then letting the batteries charge for a few days, but there is no way this can cruise for any reasonable amount of time.

Agree, they are like electric vehicles at the moment, great for daily use but not for long distance trips. However they will keep improving over time. I owned a Greenline 33 for some time but opted NOT to get the electric motor and kept all the 1.3kw of solar for cooking etc, it was great never having to use a generator, which we didn't have. I think we only ever had to run the diesel engine once after a few days of heavy rain. They could only run on electric power for a few hours at 4-5 knots. Might be nice for day trips on European lakes but no good for even a short offshore passage which we often did.
