I would surely like to see more about the reliability and the ease of operation of the kite sail. This crossing was with silent 64. I do hope to see how the more advanced 60 or 55 perform crossing the Atlantic. Please make more detail videos of ocean crossing using 55 and 60. The one with e powers +. Other options seem way under powered, and have to turn it into power yacht burning diesel.

An awesome feat. I suspect that if you complimented the solar with some wind assistance(masted sails or kite sail), your dependence on fuel would have been significantly less. Full solar is close, but technologically falls short because of the unreliability of cloudless skies. With full sun(in a perfect world), they could have likely made the trip with no fuel usage.

It would be really nice to see real figures about the yacht performance during the crossing. Even cruising at low speed, say 4 knot, the engine power must have been around 20 kW. With an installed maximum PV power of 17 kWp, how could you sustain running the engines day and night? I think this remains a milestone in yacht history, well done, but please share real figures as based on my simulations the diesel generator has provided about 10-times more energy compared to the PV system.

@Joe Malovich I agree. I'd like to see more footage and live experiences dealing with the weather where they make attempts to go without solar. If you have a schedule to keep then you need more solar/batteries and the kite to extend you through the droughts. Well you also have to keep in mind that they weren't 'cruising' they were delivering the boat. When you're hopping island to island, time doesn't matter as much. Also it's important to know the array of electronics on board, including the full size fridge/freezer, induction stove, A/C and so on. So the power isn't just used for propulsion. You think they were trying to be most efficient? Probably not as much as a typical cruiser would be. Lastly, the boats are designed for a specific customer in mind - customer chooses motors, generators, etc. Obviously one can customize for their use-case. I find this very exciting actually and I'm sure if time weren't as important they could optimize for non-diesel use

There are towable generators for sailboats. Their drag however is very noticeable and of course would be inefficient for a electric boat.
@carsonc1272
@carsonc1272 4 жыл бұрын
What has happened here is that the standard sailing catamaran boat layout has had its mast removed and solar panels added. What needs to happen is a boat that is designed especially for maximizing solar. That means you need to start with a catamaran design that has a ton of roof area. Ferries aren't known for how attractive they are but catamaran ferries do have double the roof area of these "sailing cat" designs. If these guys had twice the solar panels could they have made it across the atlantic without depending on the generator? Plus there would be more interior space for any given boat length. Meaning that a 45ft boat would be equal in interior volume to a 55ft boat. Hopefully someday Solar Yachts will broaden their design concepts and incorporate a boat like this...

@carsonc1272
@carsonc1272 Жыл бұрын
@@jamesbostick3936 No, they tweaked small parts of a sailing yacht so that electric parts fit into it better. And yes , I suppose optimized the hull shape to the speed of the boat. But what I'm suggesting is to look at the electric yacht from a first principals engineering standpoint and not just copy and paste a sailing yacht form factor just because it's there and familiar. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ravOZomslK2Na9k I think that it's important to note that Silent Yachts makes a hybrid electric yacht that is very dependent on the gen set. The link above is a ferry so it isn't as sleek as a yacht but it demonstrates that you can get a lot more roof area for solar. Between the added roof area and the foils they demonstrate that power production can go up while reducing energy consumption. Could a design like this ferry cross an ocean without turning on a genset? I don't know, but it's way more efficient than a Silent Yacht. It's possible that the electric boat of the future could even incorporate mini wings that in combination with the foils help even more with solar roof area versus efficiency. Don't get me wrong, because I love Silent Yachts and what they've done. I've followed them very closely from their beginnings and if I had an extra 2 million I'd get one. But Silent Yachts isn't a "Tesla" that innovates. Silent Yachts is a Ford or GM that sticks with concepts that are very safe for them to copy and paste and is very happy with producing a hybrid boat that is dependant on the genset and diesel to go any farther than a few hours away. There is much more that can be accomplished in this space and I'd like to see Silent Yachts push the boundaries rather than play it so safe. In Silent Yachts defence, a gen set will need to be a part of any electric yacht until there is a battery density breakthrough of 5x to 10x. So I do understand that they have accepted this and figure that if they're going to have one on board anyway then why not use it instead of it rust away.

They’ve tried it. It wasn’t as efficient as a “solar only” cat since the sails covered the panels (The negatives outweighed the positives). However they do offer a kite option which doesn’t cover the panels which is impressive and fully automated but also an expensive add on.

@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665

They do but the solar panels can recharge the batteries faster than some shore power facilities can carry... One good day of sun and they can keep all the house keeping charges going with the boat in use and still be charging... they are very insulated and all the domestic equipment especially the air con is chosen for its efficiency. So ive heard Micheal say running the air con at a European comfortably cool level for the 60 even early on consumes only 2kw a day. Vessels with front opening doors and windows ..can avoid having to run aircon much of the time .. by virtue of natural ventilation and the heavy duty thermal insulation on these vessels. It works both ways.

How do you get rid of excess energy? You can't switch a solar panel off. When it's exposed to sunlight it keeps generating power.
@ShadowByNine
@ShadowByNine 4 жыл бұрын
The concept of solar panels is really similar to drawing water from a pool. Can only draw water from the pool if it's filled and it only fills when it rains, any excess is just over flow and doesn't go into the pool. Just to clarify, the solar cells don't store power like a pool would hold water. A better example would of been to say getting water from a sheet of plastic on the ground when it rains, it doesn't store it, but collects the water and can only collect as much as the size of it. The pool would be like a battery that stored the water that the sheet of plastic collected.

It all depends on the time frame. As the owner of the yacht was on a tight schedule, they used the generator for more speed. However, depending on the weather conditions and the speed, you can cross it purely on solar as well.

They travelled 5500 nautical miles actually. So at an average speed most cruisers go, say 5 knots, thats 1100 hours. Lets say you have a net 300 (2 engines so 150hp each) power cat that gets an average of 16.6 GPH (using basic calculations from boatingmag). Thats 17,600 gallons of fuel. This solar Cat used 317 gallons for the same distance/time. Even if they burned diesel before the crossing that's WAY better than a powercat. You want to say the phrase "not efficient" again?
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 2 жыл бұрын
@@uni4rm Glad to see you ran those numbers ... 👍🏼 Ive seen some very distorted reporting in other reports for these vessels.. one may criticise the styling and details of the vessels but there seems to be incredible hostility to the Electric power system and the fact that an ICE generator actually is more efficient run in this way is better for the motor and more fuel efficient therefore Less polluting. The other aspect is the cruising speed.. having watched many seasoned ⛵ sailors traveling oceans.. even in spring summer their average speeds are seldom above this level...and many get becalmed.. many dont have space to carry the amounts of fuel they would need to motor out of extended adverse weather conditions.. they have to wait for favourable winds and rely on helpful currents... Those waves were of a serious size.. and would challenge most much larger vessels ... You only have to look at the number of owners opting to transport their vessels on transporter vessels to make the same crossings. 🤔
