I liked how when you walked over to Slav while he was connecting the fuel line to the boat at the end of the video he instantly started explaining what he was doing, you didn’t even have to ask him haha. Tell Slav its greatly appreciated!! I love when you guys explain how stuff works all the technical stuff is one of the main appeals to the videos for me!

The best thing you said to Jason is "do you understand "WHY". That is so important to someone learning ship handling, it cant be over emphasized! Mimicking someone else's engine orders doesn't let the trainee get the feel of the vessel and the results of moving the throttles. It has to be felt. Great job to both of you!

Your comments apply to any teaching scenario. I have always, when teaching new staff, asked them if they understand why. It just makes perfect sense. Mimicking just copies and that's useless if they don't understand why. Great comment,

As a Trainer myself with over 35 years experience, that was well done. Decisive, calm and coherent. But more important, you gave excellent feedback at the end. I always refer my students back to Ms Nichols my maths Teacher at school, she walked into the classroom one day, did a vulgar fraction on the board and said turn to page 58. THAT is not teaching, similarly all to many Teachers simply demonstrate that they can do it, of course you can you are the Teacher" a good Teacher uses the 4 steps, 1. This is what we do, 2, This is how we do it , 3. This is why we do it and 4. this is how you put it right when it goes wrong.

Great video. This takes me back a few decades. Whenever we were on the helm or engine room telegraph the operator/helmsman always repeated the verbal order back to the officer in charge. For example. Officer 'Port ten' meaning 10 degrees of port rudder. The helmsman would repeat back 'Port ten sir'. If the officer doesn't correct the helmsman (there can be all sorts of noise so helmsman can mis-hear thee command) the helmsman applies 10 degrees port rudder. When this is done the helmsman reports "Ten of port wheel on sir". When the officer wants the rudder centered, he commands "Midships" Helmsman replies "Midships" and when the wheel is centered the helmsman reports "Wheel's a midships sir" - and so on. Same for engine telegraph operator on the bridge but reply back from engine room is mechanical not verbal. The little mechanical arrow points to what the engineer thinks the order is. I enjoyed this video. Thanks.

He is a lucky boy being allowed to have a go on the sticks. I was in the industry for 20 years as chief officer and during that time was given less than 10 opportunities to get some manourvering experience. I had to take my own command to feel comfortable with driving. Its piss easy really. A good captain, mentoring his chief officer and giving him the skills to be relief captain if and when required.

WOW!! Amazing content!! Just found channel, I work in the mining industry we are regulated by MSHA and always reminded about safety, I'm not sure what OSHA regulations are in ocean rigs. A little recommendation as an injury preventive action to take would be for whoever is fueling the Yacht to wear closed sealed glasses (goggles) in case fuel line busted or came undone to prevent fuel to eye injury, also to wear working gloves to protect hands.. not pointing this out as criticism, as an outsider or viewer I'm just looking in and pointing to safety as something we do and watch for every day at the mines.. cheers!!

Good comment sir, as there is kinda nothing worse than a bad tutor/teacher, yelling/shouting and abusing you and what not ,yelling orders in your ear, -like as if that's going to help berth the vessel better/help you learn better , by halfscaring you half to death ,like you see with old-school dads abusing everyone for no reason.

Bar none... my favorite video. Capt.. you did superbly walking Jason thru the steps to perfectly guide AWOL to refuel. This video reminds all us Yankee folk tending to our 15yr old children out on their first drive with the learner's permit. Careful not to have a coronary event, but confident we have properly insured the vehicle. Your instruction was spot on and Jason did magnificently. He knew exactly what jargon you spat at him and guided AWOL perfected into port to get gas. Well done on another fantastic vlog.

I have grown up with boats my whole life while living at Lake Tahoe and docking a boat just takes practice. My boats were much smaller being at 20 to 24 feet. You have to know how to dock on both sides of the boat being port and starboard. Marine gas stations can be on either side and you have to know how to dock in between two other boats too plus you have to learn to dock while backing up your boat. Windy days were the hardest when I was learning. Inboards are a bit harder to learn on than inboard outboard engines. I just love the older 1950’s wooden Chris Craft boats. Now I am in my early 60’s and living in the big city starting to retire and I have to say with all my travels around the world I still think being on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe at sunset during summer time is my all time favorite place on this planet. I am sure everyone has their favorite spot too. I would love to learn how to dock that super yacht.

Yeah, these relatively big MOTOR yacht get more complex with their systems as the grow in size by every feet ,like you said ; pushing this button twice, I mean a 95 ft. Yacht of a similar design is SO MUCH SIMPLER, like a magnetic compass only, and obviously GPS as well, but as soon as your talking 130ft. and above ,things like GYRO compasses are onboard these size vessels, it's almost SHIP-like in equipment specs.

Tristan - a thought on the lack of containment boom at your stern may have been related to the wind direction or having to wait for the yacht which docked behind you. Nice job working with Jason. To allow him to practice his skills with no risk of damage to the yacht, if there is ever time when the boat is not working, would be to drop some anchored round fender balls overboard in an open, depth-appropriate area and let the practice & learning begin! Use the tender to move the balls around to imitate docking in a variety of wind conditions such as "on the bow, stern and either beam". Safe journeys!
