Supplements: Useful Or Useless?

Even with a perfect diet, the combination of many things-including our depleted soils, the storage and transportation of our food, genetic alterations of traditional heirloom species, and the increased stress and nutritional demands resulting from a toxic environment-make it impossible for us to get all the vitamins and minerals we need solely from the foods we eat. And large-scale deficiencies of nutrients in our population-including omega-3 fats, vitamin D, folate, zinc, magnesium, and iron-have been well documented. So what do we need to know when it comes to combating these deficiencies with supplementation?⁣

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss common nutrient deficiencies and what you need to know about determining what supplements are best for you.⁣

Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.⁣

I believe deep down she is pissed that he does that, but it's his podcast, so what's she gonna do? Tell him to let her talk? People already gave him a lot of feedback regarding this, so here is hoping he reads that and takes something from it, or ignores it and continue being a bad moderator, in this case people can find someone else to listen to..

I'm so thankful for personalized functional medicine... it saved my life. I was trained as a conventional immunotoxicologist specializing in autoimmune disease, and then I came down with my own set of autoimmune diseases. After suffering for decades, I'm now a walking, talking testament to the science of functional medicine. At 57, I'm healthier than I think I've ever been. Remarkable what we can achieve if we just give our bodies what they need and get out of their way. Thank you for all you do, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Boham... you're my mentors from afar and I hope to meet you at the next IFM conference.

I am 67 years old. Up until 2010, all my life, I suffered from bad colds every winter. Typically three per season. These colds always ended up in a Chest infection. The cold would get better after 3-4 days, but the chest infection and congestion would go on for another 3 weeks. I used to dread winter coming (in the UK) and the misery of these colds. In 2010, I heard a radio program (BBC Today) about Zinc. Since I was now taking medication for T2 diabetes and IBD, I thought "what the hell just another pill per day" (20 mg Zinc citrate). The result has been as follows. In the past ten years I would normally have had between 20 and 30 colds with chest infection; since taking zinc every day I have had just six colds (less than 1 per year), so a reduction of around 76% in colds. What is more, if I now get a cold, there is NO chest infection. Zinc is cheap. Thirty tablets costs about one pound. So for me, taking a zinc supplement has been a huge success. I have told lots of people about it, but most are cynical. Recently, I also now take vitamin D3 each day too.

My husband and I both take specific supplements. We work with a Functional Medicine Physciain and the key to what we do is TESTING!!! We ONLY take the supplement that out blood labs show that is needed and ONLY Professional supplements like Metagenics etc. We ALSO focus on organic and GMP free foods as well. But as we age we often no longer absorb the nutrients we take every day. The take away? Get tested...and work with a highly trained individual.
@Lots3say

That's great information. Testing is great, but affordability is an issue for some. I'm all for getting help from functional doctors, but the costs to see doctors and get tests is high for many, especially if many are already paying expensive health insurance premiums. I hope Dr. Hyman can do a show one day on how to afford a functional doctor and tests.

Some insurance does pay for vitamins each company is different some require a prescription for the vitamin, some just want you to buy the vitamin then submit the receipt for reimbursement, and my Medicare advantage plan united healthcare has a catalog I can choose from that has vitamins, first aid supplies, testing equipment and more. They credit my account $50 every 90 days that I can use to buy what I want shipping is always free! Now the company I was with before had a similar plan but I could choose items from Walmart only certain items but it was actually a better deal because Walmart had much better prices. Be sure to check your insurance plan or ask if they have a benefit for first aid, over the counter meds and such as many now do and more are adding it because they find those who take care of themselves a really lower health care cost in the long run. Unfortunately most folks never even realize that Thier plan Includes the benefit so they go years without taking advantage of it

Pain when pressing on the shin bone can be due to Lipoedema (UK spelling), or possibly Fibromyalgia - though I wonder whether Fibromyalgia, in my case particularly, was a misdiagnosis and is in fact due to the Lipoedema (and Lymphoedema that developed due to late diagnosis and no compression for decades).

People are creatures of habit, and I noticed that the majority of people that have some type of sickness all have one thing in common, they eat for pleasure not for health because they believe that if it tastes good and fits in your mouth then it must be good for you. Our society also plays a role in our psychology to influence us on what we are to consume whether it's coming from peer pleasure in school or in the workplace. The food manufacturing industry are experts in convincing you to buy their edible products marketing them as healthy for you when in reality they care more about profit than your health, so don't be surprised if you find out that they also invest in pharmaceutical or life insurance stocks because it's a profitable win-win proposition for them. So the bottom line is to know what you want in life? What makes you happy? It's sad to watch someone work so hard to reach their financial goals only to lose it to poor health.

PureBulk for best pricing. Spred out mag thru the day. Take it all at once and you may be pooping alot. Figure out which type works well for you. Mag glycenate mixed in water tastes kind of sweet and fishy...gross, but a lot cheaper than pills if you can put up with the taste.☺

The thing is you have to be tested first, only a Dr can order & understand what it means & what to do about it. I just went to a Specialist who I hadn't seen since 2015 because of Transportation cost & his rates $160.00/visit. He had got any & all medical report's & gave me copies, I didn't get any of the information & will have to find out what some mean, He had tested my Vitamin Mineral levels before & I do not have to take any C apparently my body utilizes it to the MAX while it does not absorb B well.& I have to take extra all the time. In all the resulting reports it showed I was deficit in two places, yet the Dr that ordered the test never told me,
