I started my career as a pipefitter in the late 80s, ultimately I specialized in pneumatic controls and then transitioned into DDC controls and I am now and engineer, quite the journey. I have a tremendous amount of admiration and respect for all of the individuals that work in the building trades. They are so many dedicated and talented individuals in all of the trades. My hats off to everyone that straps on a tool belt, climbs a ladder and gets their hands dirty. Keep up the great work.

Do you have any particular advice for someone who wants to become both a plumber and a pipefitter at the same time? I'm currently going to community college to get a welding certification, and I plan to go the union route for pipefitting. The only thing is that I also wonder if doing plumbing and pipefitting simultaneously would be possible.

Looks like a straight shooter , humble guys, it's tough mentally to study at uni but construction can be both physically and mentally draining, when I started my Carpentary apprenticeship my old man ( ex carpenter) said it's fun but a young mans game another carpenter friend said why the hell would you want to be a carpenter, you don't want to work out in the wind and the rain haha I guess every job has ups and downs. There's a lot to learn in the trades I think,

Plumber in Australia the same as electrician license to print. Build a good reputation and I agree sky can be the limit. Carpenters like me where I come from were senior trade. After all you build the structure and generally on site the longest to know most about the job. In Oz we are among the lowest paid and least regarded. Probably largely because carpentry has been split into so many sections and it takes ten different men to do what one used to. From 40 years experience in the trade mostly self employed I wouldn't go that route again. No holidays, no sick pay, no compo, no pension, no medical benefits etc. Keeping up with the work, paperwork, customers, building permits, book keeping etc. Should have found a good firm to work for do my work get paid and go home. Take a paid holiday or have a day off sick. Too late to change now but something to think about.

Ditto mate. They managed to fuck it up down under well and truly. Blue collar was yesteryears fashion, now days its the hipsters and PC mob 's time to enjoy what older generations built. We need an earthquake.

As a retired Pipefitter, I must say I hate being put into the plumber category. You can tell a plumber when they throw in Pipefitter in their title. Burns my ass!!!!!! Want a be Pipefitters. I respect plumbers... they have no business crossing over and taking our work. We can’t take theirs. Ratty son of a guns.

It's all wine and cheese if your lucky to start off in a New England UA local, you can make a Fantastic more than liveable wage! But the ugly side these guys don't know or won't mention is that if your in a UA local down deep south you will be damned lucky to work 6 months out of the year unless your willing to go full NOMAD and chase the jobs across the US. You won't keep a wife if she doesn't travel with you guaranteed!!! And that type of life seems exciting when your young BUT is a severe test for any relationship/family. My father did it and I whished I could have known then when I got in the trade, what I know now. It is a great education system and fraternal organisation though, I have to admit.

Learn, Learn, Learn. You are basically in school as an apprentice. Someone has to check everything and soon it will be your turn.
