Supra V160 Transmission Rebuild (HD)

Here's a rare look into the insides of the v160 supra getrag transmission with new components by Joe H. I managed to shatter a few gears from the years of wear and tear on components. It actually took several hours to complete, but now its shifts wonderfully and drives great.

Beautiful looking transmission there. Just rebuilt an R154 and now after watching this I realize quickly why those Getrags do take the abuse much more forgivingly than Toyota R-series.

Apply heat? To expand the parts just a tab so they can fit and when the parts get cold they fit perfect.

Some gears have to be heated to expand and quickly have to be pushed into the shaft so it can cool down and "lock" itself in place, thermal expansion

to briank I have a v160 thats not in my supra yet if you get a hold of the shifter shaft and you find neutral isnt it supposed to rotate to the left and to the right? mine will only rotate to the right is there something wrong then? please help thank you

I just repaired one, replaced 2nd gear hub, they are complicated but not too bad to do! You must have common sense and the manual to do it correctly. Do not use heat or jaw pullers only the ones that use bolts and take your time.

Why does everyone say that you cannot rebuild the V160?, IMO almost anything can be rebuilt. all the supra guys always say they cannot be rebuilt...hmm

The gears and shafts aren't available. Just synchros, forks, and seals are available.

Hey I have a question. For supras is there any difference between the factory sz-r (2jz ge) getrag v160 6 speed and the 2jz Gte getrag v160 6 speed? Is there a turbo and non turbo version? If there is a difference how can you tell by physical apperance?

they are exactly the same. strength, ratios, everything. which is why the Sz-r demands similar prices to twin turbo cars. the trans makes the supra expensive. the GTE on it's own is nothing when we're talking price. you can get those much easier than you can hope of finding a V160. That and they also come with the equally expensive and rare TRD twin turbo option Differential that is good for 197mph on the factory redline in JDM models. unfortunately they're second best as the American version twin turbo diff is good for over 200mph on the factory redline. but simply revving to 8000 on a built motor will make either rear end exceed 200mph which is plenty fast to rearrange your equallibrium 2JZGTE longblock: $2500. complete. V160 by itself: $7-12000

do you have any issues with engagement? its a clunky transmission by nature due to the beefy gear sets. I wouldn't recommend opening it up if there is no actual problems.

I notice 2nd when cold is a bit hesitant to shift into. I also noticed when going into 3rd from 2nd can sometimes miss. It's as if the shifter jams? I am hearing from others that it's the pressure plate fingers that may be fucked and thus making the noise. Is it possible for the noise to transfer to the rear end of the tranny where I am hearing the noise when under the car?
