Hype is hyperbolic fake excitement driven purely by the crushing emptiness in people's souls caused by the excesses of unfettered capitalism snatching away everything else that could be possibly passionate for people and replacing it with a misdirected aspiration that makes people think that consumerism will fill the hole in their hearts.

Weekely format, including sam bee's full frontal is where the best political comedy is at.

Damn, I had this conversation about hype and scarcity marketing and limited edition drops when the Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson video came out about how they crashed Shopify and basically shut down all the websites when their collab came out. People don't understand how this is playing them into impulse-buying because it doesn't leave them time to think about the purchase they're about to make. And it leaves out lots of people. It's even worse when they "fake hype", and it's not really even limited edition, or selling out, but they only made a few.. like with the Nintendo Wii when it came out, or when a new iPhone drops. The hype becomes "who gets it first". Crashing servers or selling out capsule collections in seconds is a power move, it's like a free marketing stunt to show off status, preying on people's FOMO to make a quick buck. Also, I'm low-key impressed by the reference to Veblen, Hasan's right, his researchers DO make him look smart...!
@someonenothere88184 жыл бұрын
Ok, but like Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson's stuff isn't limited edition at all like Supreme, so that doesn't actually work. Also, their makeup line isn't as overly priced either. If you watched their videos, you would realize that they actually did have a lot in stock. And they actually notified shopify to be prepared, and were pissed when the website crashed, it was in the video. They didn't do any of that shit intentionally. I don't love those two, but there is a difference between them and supreme. Just saying.

I find it amazing how companies manipulate people into thinking things are cool. Or that they manipulate the innate need for people to belong or show they're better than others. Most people spend soooooo much time and effort trying to please people they don't even know (who often don't even know you've tried) that they wouldn't wanna be friends with. But it works... and there'll always be someone willing to take advantage of it. If only you could manipulate that for good..

Like, inferior people should not be able to own it, and it's kept out of their reach by price and rarity. Have you ever felt something you owned improved your status image, and if someone from whom you want to be different from owned it too, the thing would lose value in your eyes? It's like that.

Tbh, Gandhi says the exact opposite in his private letters to Franklin Roosevelt, supporting black people. So, he isn't as well studied as you might think. It's almost as though Gandhi was trying to make any friends as he can for his own cause, independence. Utilising British hatred for blacks, and Roosevelt's sympathy for blacks, by whatever means he could, for his own agenda. He even tells of the indian government for fighting pakistan, despite pakistan starting the war. gandhi confused everybody, the guy was clearly not rational.

Morality≠Rationality In any case.. If history is in fact a real science, and not a glorified-pseudoscience: The consensus is that he came around to his anti-blackness during later years in South Africa. Also, I understand that while it may be convenient to solely blame "the Britishers": But I'm not sure that the Dutch( Afrikaner people), even when they were long dethroned by his time, were not influential in expressing their hatred of the indigenous, majority populace° - either, "@@BallyBoy95". °Which is different from what's mostly considered the "brown people" of India, _i.e._ the backyard of Late "Nelson Mandela of India" itself. Your show is so well-referenced, I would love it if you would share those. I've binge watched them all after discovering them late in the season. As an older person not familiar with pop culture, I need a "cheat sheet" to keep up. Fortunately, your humor goes beyond any references I might not understand. I'll have to watch multiple times and look up the things I don't understand so I can laugh again only the next time as someone in on the joke. Great work. I really need these intelligent laughs.

The uncertain laughter/gasps when he mentions SA gets me. They're preparing the right reaction to a possible joke about racism (because that's the only thing SA is known for)... as he eyeballs the audience to see how many (or few) actually get the ghandi connection. Funny.
@Gidi665 жыл бұрын
Sa is known for a few things like racism, xenophobia, rapes, taxi violence and some weapons and armoured vehicles and the first successful heart transplant the whole Ghandi thing is only mentioned in a history textbook paragraph talking about Indians in the history of my country South Africa I haven't seen or heard or read anything about Indians because most people here just don't care there more afraid about some coming race war between the whites and blacks tho only politicians are calling for sutch actions most people really just don't care

@@leesteal4458 that would be very hard to find since most political extremists are urging for the two largest colors to wipe the smaller one out. It is something that I've been beating the drum about for many, many years, particularly around fashion trends and deriving "identity" from clothing /accoutrements, or believing that "identity" is expressed through outward appearance, or that "identity" is a meaningful pursuit. Maybe we are starting to realize and even acknowledge that the drop-down menu of "identity" is sometimes designed by people who don't give a crap about us, and instead is done to fulfill agendas of control.
