Day 1 of 12: Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl presents his Quranic commentary on Surah 4: Al Nisa’ as part of the ongoing Project Illumine: Light of the Quran series at The Usuli Institute (www.usuli.org). The verses covered in Day 1 are roughly, numbers one to twelve. Note, if you are looking for the Shaykh’s general overview on Surah Al Nisa, it can be found towards the end of the Day 11 recording.
Project Illumine is a year-long intensive immersion into the unique moral messages in each of the 114 surahs (chapters) of the Quran, the fruit of this scholar's lifetime relationship with the Quran. This is the seventy-fourth chapter in the series. This is not the traditional line-by-line exegesis, but a chapter-by-chapter thematic approach that seeks to rediscover the original meaning received by the early Muslims that sparked their passion such that they transformed from desert dwellers to civilization builders. It is an investigation of the timeless moral and ethical lessons of the Quran then applied to our modern day. In the introduction, our Executive Director Grace Song brings attention to how Uyghurs are ignored in media discussions today, while advocating that Muslims unite to combat Islamophobia. Recorded at The Usuli Institute on 22 January 2022.

I always argued that allowing to marry 4 wives is misunderstood, but people get nasty when you explain it to them especially the middle easterns. Thank you and Allah bless you

So, the Quran is saying to men that in order to look after orphans, they can marry 1, 2, 3 or 4 women...I don't understand the link...

In Islam a child is considered an orphan if they've lost their father, but they could still have their mother. I could be wrong in my understanding, but if a man notes there is a widow with children who need support, he could marry her and a couple other women in similar situations, thereby becoming a provider to all these women and children.

the verse was revealed after a war and there were many men dead. at that time on average men were the bread winners. having men dies left so many women and children in poverty and hunger. so the revalation came that if you want to take care of the orphans they can marry 1,2,3,4 so that they can feed the orphans. there are more detailed video on this. check search for beauty channel.

@@kamlasayeen Salam, the shaykh says specifically (sorry I didn't note the timestamp) that orphans are children who lost their guardian, whether father or mother.
