I actually think it’s becoming rather cliché. I first became aware of this device being used again in television during the first season of “House of Cards“ on HBO. I think we will see, in the future, this dead horse being beaten much more.

4th wall breakage in this case is a tip of the hat to the Anne Lister Diaries. She shared her life in those words and now she's sharing her life on the screen. I think it is a perfect use of the convention. Also, the 4th wall breakage is not over-used, and that makes each instance quite special and often, when appropriate, even funnier. I've only just saw the series. I am trying to recover from being riveted to the screen. I bought the series from Amazon in full thus did not have to wait for an episode. OH MY! Suranne had me all the way, she channeled what I thought Anne Lister was: confident, strong, a woman who loved women. I have replayed many scenes but one that I cannot not view often enough is the scene in Ep. 8 and the dialog that takes place between Walker & Lister near the pit. As a lesbian who desires this quality of acting, I was totally convinced the acting of both took me into reality of life. It was tender love and both actors expressions caught by the camera/director simply swept me into nostalgia. Suranne's face when she said 'Don't hurt me.' Gosh. The words coming from Ann Walker was such loving dialog. Her character shone even more so, came alive more deeply. I loved seeing that happen. The entire cast were outstanding. Never a dull moment, so I think very much like Lister's life. Thank you for your vision Sally Wainwright. I am one happy lesbian watching Suranne become Lister. Wish I had series like this growing up but better late than never... hugs to all. Suranne's expression as Lister will linger for a long time. Please as the series advances do not take us to Lister's death, let us know her life, end it with love and not sadness so I can enjoy rewatching this series for years to come. To restate: I can handle the reality of Lister and her passing, make S3.

We were describing it to some friends and I said, "We're both in love with Anne." And my husband said, "We don't know if we want to 'be her' or 'do her'", and it's true! People who watch shows want to identify with a certain character (the main character would be the best of course) and people, who are straight can not really identify with Anne Lister because this show is mainly about a love stroy between two women. I think that's absolutely understandable. I'm a lesbian myself and I don't really like watching movies/shows,where there are only straight couples just because I can't identify with them. I think that's what the person behind this comment meant - that this show is so great that even people who think "Meh, this is about a lesbian maybe this series is nothing for me" should watch it!

I watched Gentleman Jack bc I love Suranne Jones as an actress. I was so surprised at her ability of acting. I enjoyed the quirky attitude, educated and very savvy Anne and I laughed so much especially the ballroom scene, her walking and that headdress and had such a good time watching Gentleman Jack.. In love with this production. Just binge-watched it this past weekend. Brilliant piece! First time I've seen Suranne and she is mesmerizing (perfect choice...PERFECT I tell you). Anne Lister was an amazing woman and so glad that her journals were decoded and her life brought to life, and in such a relevant time in our history. And the music......................love love love the jaunty theme. I rather think I'd like this as my theme music as I purposely make my way thru the office LOL :) So nice to see Gemma (formerly Yara Gregjoy in GOT)...the sister dynamic is quite hilarious. And I think the use of Suranne looking into the camera directly at times is quite engaging. I've heard there will be a second season and I am delighted. Well done!

The introduction of *Anne Lister* was filmed in *Little Germany, Bradford.* Those same streets have been used in at least 20 different productions in the last 10 years alone with the some of the most recent ones being *Downton Abbey* (2019), *Peaky Blinders* and *The ABC Murders.* She parks the stagecoach on *Cater Street* which is around the back of: Tommy's factory in *Peaky Blinders,* The theatre exterior in *The ABC Murders,* and The place where the Beligians are hiding out in the flashback scenes of *The ABC Murders.*

I came to this series after seeing Suranne play "Idris"/The Tardis in Doctor Who (in a wonderful story written by Neil Gaiman). I quickly realised that an actor who can so perfectly play the role of an alien pan-dimensional space-time vehicle with a complex, possessive-but-not-jealous love for its pilot/"thief", can play just about *anybody*, and I would lap it all up, utterly convinced! =:o} I loved that first season of Gentleman Jack to bits, and am delighted it's finally back for a 2nd season (and damn and blast Covid-19 for all the delays!). Also, I can't help noticing that Suranne's portrayal of Anne Lister is more than just a little bit "Doctorish"... Could she be our Doctor Number 14, perhaps? ... As soon as she's got recording the 3rd (and probably final) season of Gentleman Jack done, of course! =:o]

Even as the straight testosteron monster that i am, i can not other but love this show. Very engaging. Her theme melody alone makes me rock my feet and get anxious to see what happens next. The breaking of the barrier to the viewer i also like, it isn't too much and quite different still to how it is done in f.e. This is an amazing expose' of a life condition to which I was exposed in the late 60's / early 70's. As a man and father of a teen daughter, her peer group included a few unsure young ladies some of whom came out to me because parents would probably have not approved. I am totally enjoying the character and feel her unrequited sexual need as if it were me. Rock on the character, Ann Lister, a true pioneer.

I, absolutely, LOVE how Sally becomes tongue-tied with excitement about this project, about the journals, about Anne Lister, about the filmed series....She is doing a brilliant job and I am equally impressed with Suranne Jones for "getting it" even though she is a non-gay woman......HBO could have several years of this series if they so choose, BUT in my opinion, some sort of continuance needs to happen, either by video or the written diaries so we know all of Anne Lister that there is to know. The only thing I worry about in the written or video continuance would be to "keep it honest".....

A fascinating story and fortunate that Anne Lister was such an interesting character to carry 8 episodes. Another excellent BBC costume drama with a lead character beautifully played by Suranne Jones and an excellent supporting cast. Anne Lister wasn’t the only famous Lesbian in history - Lady Hestor Stanhope and the Ladies of Llangollen deserve more recognition for their place in Lesbian history.

@@michcookies The scene where Lister is dressed to the nines, in a different sort of way from other scenes, and is strolling up the hillside, where she then views Ann Walker painting the historic ruins in the distance and ponders Ann, I believe, is a nod to Mr. Darcy's infamous wet shirt scene when he is strolling across the grounds before seeing Lizzie.

It's a really beautiful show. I love the relationships--all of them, quite frankly, but the relationship between Anne and Ann is so real and touching! It becomes just another love story, which is brilliant because it's as it should be. Though of course, the relationship, for its time, is extraordinary because the women are, but I love the writing and the acting is brilliant!
