one of the best comment down here. as a fan yes i admitted it that she's not the high-belting singer like mariah carey or jessie J but her stage presence is unbeatable, and the main reason why she's loved and still has a big fanbase around her is her songwriting skills. her early years vocals are quite shaky and unstable but she improved a lot since 1989 tour era (2014-2015) - now.

This generation seems so obsessed with high belts and vocal runs and things that anyone who can't do those is accused of being "bad". I don't even know where this obsession comes from, but I mean, common, music is not just about that. Take Carole King and Karen Carpenter for example. They hardly belted or did super impressive vocal runs when singing, but no one ever said they were bad artists/singers. Their music is marvellous and can touch so many hearts. The singers mentioned in this video are by no way "vocalists", but more than that, they are great artists who have decent vocal abilities to deliver their artistry. That's how I'm gonna put it.

This style of melismatic singing originated in the black gospel church and then made its way to pop music through the popular black female singers, it’s great, but you’re correct that there are other styles of singing that should be appreciated for their own merits. Taylor never marketed herself as a vocalist. She has always been a composer, multi instrumentalist with a singer-songwriter approach to her songs. You don`t have to be a vocal powerhouse to be a pop star. Depends on what kind of pop you do. Take Sheeran - he`s just fine as he is. His songs don`t need much vocal athletics. Same with Swift. You can be an awesome country artist without a particularly great voice. Perry is nothing special, but sufficient to do her job. And so on. They`re all quite successful. In the end, let´s not measure every pop talent against the so-called Greats ( Carey, Houston, etc) Not everything they sing sounds good either and you can get a bellyache of all that belting and highest-note-contests. Sometimes less is more imho.

Rihanna actually has the potential to be a vocalist! She seemed to care a lot about how she sounds early in her career by experimenting many techniques and sounds. But something i noticed after 2010 is that she started to care less about how she sounds on stage. Often it is a problem of breath control which is why she sounds bad most of the time when she sings up-tempo songs like we found a love, s and m etc.. Notice how amazing she sounds when she sings her slow tempo songs. She can easily access her upper and lower belt though she lost some of it due to smoking. I think if she works on her breathing and take some vocal lessons she can be called a vocalist. I hope we get to see more of vocalihanna on R9. Also one thing i love about rihanna is that she almost 90 % of the time never lip-synchs.

I wonder what most of y'all who are saying the thing you said are basing this argument because, yeah, right after the LOUD era (i think this album was a vocal performance) there were Talk that Talk who were mainly club bangers but the ballads on Unapologetic showcase her singing actually. So the "she stop caring after the 2010" is just a odd statement if we see the single choice she made after 2010.

Katy and Taylor have definitely gotten better Especially Katy I can testify to her(the lady literally whistled live at a performance of Bon Appetit!! Like that was insane) And then there's her song with Zedd. It really showed an unexpected agility in HV/falsetto. Just flawless. Also on Daisies she seems to be going all out in her range especially in the chorus. Cos like she blows up so high. And also Harleys in Hawaii. Her HV and falsettos sounds great. She also belts and growls in the ending. And then there's Taylor. I honestly dunno bout her upper range but like her lows sounded a lot more stable than usual... prolly on par with Lauren Jauregui tbh Her belts don't sound too forced now. They sound great. And her albums Folklore and Evermore have really shown she's mastered the art of harmonizations. And she can growl!! Vocally...trust me These two HAVE REALLY matured.

about Taylor's upper belts. She very rarely go higher than E5, but she has a lot unexpected ease. She belted G5 like nothing, it's wasn't the best technique, but not bad either. Taylor definitely could belt above E5 consistently with little more training, But it's not her style, Taylor has a lot potential in all parts of her voice, but she never really focused on her vocals, especially on upper belts and her falsetto in 6th octave and also her agility. Taylor could be quite agile if she wanted. Taylor always only focused on her lower register and mid belts. And mostly her songwriting and production of her vocals, like you said she mastered the art of harmonization.

@KG No, great tone is absolutely a learned trait. Just because genetics ALSO play a role doesn't mean great tone isn't a feature of technique. But more importantly, I never said she was talented anyways lol? Tone, Technique and Artistic Musicality are all learned traits. It's perfectly okay to say someone has potential if they've crossed one of those benchmarks. I feel like your analogy was loaded because actors don't practice being attractive the same way singers practice executing great tone, however to be fair, a lot of good tone also is a matter of genetics.

Upcoming artists should really look up to established songwriters and take their writings as an inspiration for them to write too. One of the few artists who are not only vocally-talented, but is also a talented songwriter is Mariah Carey. She has the total package and I think songwriting is what artists should really take into consideration to in order for them to be constantly successful and have longevity in their career. Take a look at Taylor. She's not on the powerhouse vocals level as Mariah or Whitney, etc. but she continues to succeed in her career because of her songwriting and her her identity as an artist.

What people need to realise is this style of melismatic singing originated in the black gospel churches and then made its way to pop music through the popular black female singers over many decades, it’s great, but there are other styles of singing that should be appreciated for their own merits. You don’t have to hit the high notes or belt for your life to be a ‘good singer’. A singer like Billie Eillish or Angele are great examples. Also when people talk about great vocalists I never hear rock vocalists mentioned, only soul divas and that’s a problem. We need to change the conversation around what ‘Good’ singing is.

I have seen many people covering Taylor Swift's songs (since she has so many hits)... And, over the years, I've come to realize that she has one big strength (in my opinion)... And that is: emoting and intonation, specially when it comes to portraying the "characters" in her songs (or dialogue). You can always hear if the speaker is sad, angry, happy, nostalgic, vulnerable, free, etc. You can also tell nuance on her lines, for example: you can distinguish playful sarcasm (a joke) from passive-agressive sarcasm (resentment), or real confidence from pretence (someone who is still hurt but trying to power through). It's very... Theather-esque, despite it being pop music. And I'm sure this is something she considers carefully while recording the songs. I've heard many better vocalists singing her songs, with different arrangements, but sometimes there's something off... And I think it's when their "voice acting" isn't good, it just sounds off, less expressive, less intentional. It ruins the delivery of the lines.

Rihanna is my fave but I agree that she is the epitome of 'good but not that good'. She's exuded a lot of potential in all areas of her voice since her debut and over the years has improved in terms of pitch, nasality, tonal quality, and low notes but has lost some of her agility, comfort, and range. She's very inconsistent live and I think a lot of it is intentional because I feel like part of her brand is having that idgaf attitude and singing in the moment rather than caring a whole lot about how she sounds. I get the appeal of her singing style but wish she took herself a little more seriously when singing live because she really can sound amazing when she's in the zone. But I agree that you don't have to be an amazing vocalist always, what sets Rihanna apart and makes her a successful artist is her instantly recognizable gritty, Caribbean tone that everyone can't get enough of and is where, I believe, the talent lies.

YEP. lazy is the best way to define rihanna when it comes to her singing. lately it seems like she doesnt even bother. i feel like if she was inspired enough to want to reach the stars/levels of the liies of mariah, whitney, aretha, celine, patti labell, she would have been probably as impressive as beyonce of course trained. it is very obvious that beyonce is invested into her vocals just as much as her perfomance which is why arguing that she is one of the very very great vocalists doesnt seem far fetched

Rihanna’s first 10,000 hours of practice was all self taught, which makes her the most unique singer performer of her decade and she’s improved over the years. her 2007 live concert in Manchester showed her performing style is like no existing artist, it’s fresh. It’s different but it’s very good. She’s judged harshly because she didn’t get trained to sing like everyone else, but that’s what makes her the one of the most memorable artist today

What is "lately" coz we haven't heard Rihanna perform since 2016 and she's been improving since her debut. Rihanna isn't a vocal powerhouse because she does not want to be. She does use technique, it's just not what is commonly considered perfect in the singing community. For example on ANTI (the album where she lets everyone know that She rejects all norm conformity in favour of expressing herself the way she wants to and she feels has earned the right to) she has higher where she's clearly & deliberately straining her voice ( and not just in the climax as with Diamonds to express vocal style, but she's stressing her vocal cords throughout the song ), in love on the brain she's belting, singing in falsetto as well as her head voice transitioning smoothly between ranges, and in James Joint we see her control over her voice, tone & texture. So she's skilled in vocal technique.

Katy Perry is better at everything vocally. Ofc their voice have aged really well but Katy just seems to control it the best. High notes, upper mid belts, falsetto/head voice , chest voice, techniques, support, power, agility and range just goes all to Katy…

Ed and Taylor aren't the greatest singers BUT their music and songwriting is still amazing. I think the same about Harry Styles as well. Most of my favorite music isn't made by the greatest singers. Its more about the lyrics they write, the interest in their unique vocal styles, the story telling in the lyrics, the feeling it gives me when I listen and the sound of their music for me. Personality is also a huge factor even in the music they create. All three of them also play instruments as well, Ed kills it with the guitar. Lastly, anyone that tells you that Taylor Swift isn't talented is a F O O L lol. She's one of the best song writers of our generation.

Katy is the best singer from this video. Her problems is that she doesn’t hear herself quite often and the adrenaline just hit sometimes. People just criticize her vocals for no reason. Let’s argue here if you think differently. Only a few artist sing fully live without any back-up track or auto tune and that include Katy Perry.

Rihanna could’ve done better if she stopped smoking and be consistent with her technique. I remember early in her career she gave decent riffs/runs and belts and it’s worst now bc her voice at that time was lighter and it’s gotten more naturally powerful, stronger and heavier but she’s lazy and smokes too damn much. 😂😂😂😂 I’m low key mad at how much Rihanna has ruined her vocalist potential

I don't really mind much about techniques lately, since we can argue all day about which one is the better singer. What matters more for me is whether the singer has found her sound and is comfortable with it. As example for me Ariana has a lot to offer when it comes to vocals even from the start of her debut, but it took her 6 years to find the sound and brand she's into.

Being a good singer does not equate to having a belty voice. There are different types. Has nobody heard of Gabrielle Aplin. Her voice is on the complete opposite of belty. It's extremely pretty and gentle but she can sing. Ed Sheeran and Taylor are the same. They have a beautiful tone that I could just listen to to all the time.
