King's Gambit Against The Most Solid Player! Unstoppable Attack vs Immovable Force

In this video I am covering a theatricalized game played between David Bronstein and Tigran Petrosian. As this game was played in a stadium for the audience Bronstein goes for King's gambit and chooses one of the sharpest lines of that opening. By sacrificing his rook he manages to organize a very dangerous attack, but Petrosian's defense turns out to be impenetrable and finally the game ends up in a draw! As Kasparov wrote: "In those years, it was easier to win the Soviet Championship than a game against 'Iron Tigran'."

@jay_cee583
@jay_cee583 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry if this is long, but the puzzle gets more complicated the more I look at it, and knowing me I'm probably missing something obvious. I see no checkmates, but it looks like Bc2 wins an exchange and Ra1 wins at least a knight... - Bc2 can be counterattacked with Rb6. If Qxb6, then Qxc2, and black wins only an exchange. If black queen runs away, I don't see a single square the black queen can go which maintains the pressure on f3 and attacks the rook at the same time, so white queen is free to do whatever it wants, and if black queen is on a square that is still attacking the rook, white can again just sacrifice the exchange with 2. Qxc2 Qxb6. - Ra1. Now obviously the queen can't take the rook because Qxf3 is mate in 1. But If the knight blocks with 1. Nb1, then Bxb1 can be met with 2. Rc3, which counterattacks the black queen and defends the f3 pawn, allowing the white queen to move and also pins the two black pieces on the back rank. If 2...Rf8-a8, unpinning the bishop, white can double up the white rooks and defend everything via 3. Rc3-e3. So instead, if 1...Rxb1, this attacks the white queen, thereby forcing the trade sequence ending with a loose bishop after 2... Bxb1, which white can attack without dropping the f3 pawn by playing 3. Re3 or 3. Qe2. If 3. Re3, then I would play Rb8, defending the bishop and threatening to move the bishop and do something on b1 with the rook, which I don't think can be defended, but if 3. Qe2 then it looks like everything is defended with only a knight down. What am I missing?

The move Ra1 is indeed a winning move: The rook is untouchable, because if Qxa1, deflecting white queen's defence from f3 square, black follows it up with Qxf3, and it's over. Now whatever white will play, we'll see Qg2# If Ra1, and rook is not captured, white will have to lose their queen and the game. We can see that the white queen, which is passive, is overworked, which black can take easy advantage of, by Ra1
