Yes the rod does matter (agree 100%) but so does the reel and the line.... I have also seen guys with the perfect setup who cannot cast to save their lives.

I recommend the Tica 12' Salmon and Steelhead rod. Its the heavy version. Model: HLHB12H2S. I have tried dozens of rods and this is tops for the West coast. It casts super strike little neck poppers down to SP minnows with perfection. It excels with super strike needle fish, colt snipers. etc. Unless you're 9 feet tall you need a 12 foot rod. Combine it with a penn spinfisher VI 5500 long cast and 8 strand braid.

A 3 oz. Hopkins from a sandy beach is a safe bet to catch what is there !

Just like spey casting all the power comes from the lower hand. The top hand is the pivot point not a push point.
