Yeah, i really loved this film as a kid. It really achieved something special with the unique film style and themes that i never really got back then
@artbytesiaАй бұрын
Yeah, if Frozen--which was co-directed by one of the SAME PEOPLE as this movie--got praised to high heaven for supposedly being "unique," then why didn't this movie, which truly IS unique, get the same kind of attention?

The reason why Z didn’t like how Cody still wanted to compete was because it means he missed the point that Z was trying to teach him that winning does not matter the point of surfing is to enjoy yourself which is what he learned the reason he faked his death was not only was he ashamed of what his fans would think but he was ashamed of what he had become obsessed with winning he even says that winning became everything to him. he didn’t like that and he didn’t want it to happen to Cody
@Spongebrain976 ай бұрын
Yup. The scene that highlights this is after Z tells Cody something deep about surfing technique and Cody's response is "will that give me enough points to win?", which of course annoyed Z because Cody wasn't listening to the message
@ughugh1346Ай бұрын
I think yes and no I don't think Cody missed the point. I do think he actually had fun and understood, but I think it was specifically the Tube that caused issues. Cody still cares about winning at that point, and asks Z how many points he would get for "Tubing". However, to Z, the Tube is the antithesis of surfing for points; it is the holiest place for a surfer, and Cody's question perverts that in a way that Z finds unforgivable. So he explodes, and Cody, who thought he was finally getting it, finally bonding with his father figure, fights back. All Cody wanted was praise and acknowledgement, he sought it out in winning, and in showing off to Big Z. All Z wants is to feel the way he did as a kid again, and he wants to show that to Cody.
@artbytesiaАй бұрын
@@ughugh1346 In any case, it's kinda sad when Cody yanks off the necklace Z had given him as a chick--mind you, the same one he was upset about losing earlier in the movie--and throws it in the water.

I remember being stuck at the hospital as a kid and watching this movie on a mini-dvd player (like a mini laptop) over and over again... didn't have much choice to watch from, but it was the best choice... As much as I hate rewatching stuff this movie I rewatched multiple times gladly.... The only other thing I liked rewatching like this was Murder Drones from Glitch, other movies/series don't go so well... still hate rewatch shows that I recently watched

One of my top three favorite animated movies. Some of the dialogue between Cody and Z really felt like genuine bloopers of the VAs that were animated. Also Green day followed by Incubus with Cody's "Let me be me" speech hits me all the time.

My biggest takeaway from this as a kid was that it felt "smart." There was thought put into the dialog that made it feel more real. I need to rewatch. I actually just bought the PS3 video game because I needed some cartoony surfing gameplay in my collection. And no, imagining a fictional tribe of cannibals isn't racist in this nor in Pirates of the Caribbean.

From all that I've heard, it was really a love letter to the surfing community too. The commentators in it were actually professional surfing commentators. Many of the other surfer characters in the background were pro surfers in real life, to my understanding, too. The comedy was well put together and the story had so much heart to it. When I saw that stumbling block you mentioned, I actually took it as a strength. It's the confrontation of a different emotional storyline that was foreshadowed earlier on. The story of getting Big Z back into the ocean and, furthermore, into society. Cody tried and failed. And it especially hurt for him because he never really had family to watch him surf, but since that never stopped him before, he pressed on. But when Big Z did show up to the competition and saw Cody so close to winning, only to give it up to save a friend in need, it clinched both the story of their bond and the story of Big Z rejoining the surfing community. It proved to Big Z that his time was well spent and gave him a solid connection to build on for the future outside of his niece. Cody's failure was Big Z's victory over Tank. One that had been a long time coming.

😂#JusticeforIvan. But all joking aside this movie is a classic & I love it to pieces also I was one the very very few starting out that really loved it but while most seemed to have thought it was mid at best but I didn’t really care. Also this Animation for especially a non PIXAR or Walt Disney Animations is top tier. Although I do prefer Ratatouille when it comes to wide spread appeal.But Surf’s Up deserved better also I had some of The Mc. Donald’s toys when it came out & I believe I just turned 9 a few weeks before the movie came out. At that time. I’d give it a 98% just for some small factors. Otherwise I hope this movie somehow eventually ends up being almost a Toy Story or any of those other classic Anomalies.
