I have each of these devices. One generation older I might add but, I absolutely love both for different aspects. I just got my SurfaceBook 2 earlier this week for an absolute steal. The previous owner was just trying to get rid of it and said it was running slow and the battery had degraded some. I haven't had the slightest issue with it. I does stink that I can't upgrade it to Windows 11 but outside of that it's been great. I've had the 2018 iPad Pro for a few mths now and obviously love it. The SurfaceBook won't be replacing my iPad anytime soon but as an alternate device, it's perfect.

I've had the Surface Book 2 for almost two years now and I just retired it and got an iPad Pro 12,9 2020, which should arrive next week. A couple reasons why I made this decision: - I loved the Book 2's design and versatility, but I always had the strange feeling that it wasn't a laptop and it wasn't a tablet either, so it didn't have the typical laptop horsepower (it was the base version with the 7300U, since the versions with GPU are soooo expensive) and it didn't have the capabilities of a tablet because Windows 10 is really not optimized for tablet use, plus it honestly just had two usable modes: standard laptop and book mode (the closed one with reversed screen). The "only tablet" mode is just useless since the tablet alone will last three hours at best under light usage, plus the on-screen keyboard doesn't always work and I often had to go take the keyboard part just to type in KZbin and other basic stuff. While the reversed angled mode is, again, useless because the wobble is just too much, plus if you put normal pressure on the screen it won't hold and go down until it closes, unless you hold the back with your free hand. So yeah, not a tablet, not a laptop, and it does both pretty poorly considering the price tag. - The hinge. First of all, it is so damn sharp you will have to be careful handling this otherwise the corners will hurt. Then it gives more problems than benefits: for example, it makes the device a lot more fragile and I often found myself worrying about having it in a bag or luggage. Moreover, it will loosen overtime, making charging and USB/SD connections unstable occasionally, and it will obviously make it feel even more wobbly and fragile. - Battery. It has two separate batteries and they get a bit buggy sometimes: only one charges, or only one goes down (typically the tablet one, and if that goes down, the keyboard won't act as a powerbank). Not to mention the battery life on single charge mentioned in specs is complete nonsense: it will last 6-7 hours at MAX while watching Netflix or browsing, not bad but not as good as it's specified, especially considering all the other occasional bugs and there's not a dedicated GPU. - Trackpad. I treat my stuff the best that you could imagine, I always wash my hands before use, so no grease or anything, I often clean everything because I don't like smudges and fingerprints. The trackpad felt good when now, but within a year, it start becoming a bit rough and the finger didn't slide as nicely, so it became an average Windows laptop trackpad experience, almost. - Surface Pen. The tip is super fragile and wobbly, and the fact that you have to use the back on the screen to use the eraser is just a drawback to me because I have to make a greater movement than just tapping on the pen where I always have my finger ready. It also wasn't as precise as you would expect: I had some areas of the screen, particularly towards the center, where the lines came out very trembly, while the top area was working the best and pretty nicely, but I always had to move the area where I wanted to write to the top in order to not make a mess. And it wasn't the pen's fault because I tried two different ones (the first one's tip fell apart while having it in the backpack, and again, I always make sure every device is safe wherever it is). This is all that comes to mind at the moment. Maybe some of these issues were taken care of on the Book 3 but honestly, the chassis is the exact same so I'm not too sure about that. I chose to go for the iPad because I really wanted the tablet aspect while still having the possibility to use it as a laptop for normal tasks. I do creative work as well so having something that's a full blown tablet and can be used as a laptop will be a better device than one that is barely an attempt to be a tablet and has pretty average laptop capabilities. We'll see what my experience on the iPad goes, so stoked :D

Surface Book 1 and 2 had many problems with the stylus not working, swollen batteries, yellow spots on screen because of bad temperature management. In my opinion, MS should scrap the core i5 model as it doesn't come with an discrete graphics, the keyboard dock doesn't have a dGPU(same thing, I know) and worst of all you can get the same specs on a Surface Pro but with much less money I believe(I'm 100% sure that it won't cost you $1600). Core i7, 16GB and an NVIDIA GeForce should be the standard of SB3 and I don't mind the starting price of $2000 if it serves good purpose.

Awesome comparison! There aren’t too many reviews of the base version of the Surface Book 3. I’d love to see a comparison between the 13.5” Surface Book 3 that is $1,999 to the higher end 13” MacBook Pro. I think that one is worth the extra $400 due to getting the i7 processor, 16GB Ram, 512 SSD & dedicated graphics. The more expensive builds start losing their value, IMO, when you compare it to getting a Dell XPS or MBP with an iPad.
