Every single Surface Product I and my family own is still going strong! These devices are so good there really is no need to upgrade. My oldest Son still uses his SP3. I have a Surface Bluetooth keyboard I don't use much. My BTLE keyboard with Fingerprint Hello that I have not charged in over two years still has 86% battery charge after over two years! Not life that's ready to go charge. That gets me thinking maybe I will use that KB with my desktop, good Idea. Will match its Surface Mouse.

Honestly, I had a 15" SB2, i7, GTX1060, 512 GB SSD and 16Gb ram, (I sold it to subsidize cost of SB3) and I was never able to recharge the unit with the USB C. I was able to maintain it's charge but never able to recharge it to full.

Great review and commentary on the surface book 3 and dock. Which surface book size did you have and recommend? 13 or 15? Currently I have a surface pro 5 and looking to upgrade it. Feel it's underpowered. I can't decide which size to get. I have the surface pro 5 connected to the first gen Dock that is connected to a 4K monitor (running at 30hz) and a 2k running @ 60hz. Not a fan of plugging my Dell U2720q 4k monitor directly to the mDP on the surface to get 60hz all the time. For that reason I can't wait to get the new Docking station with upgraded ports and power soon.

According to microsoft the surface pro 7 gets 10.5 hours of battery life, but i have yet to encounter anyone who is managing to get close to 8 hours of battery life out of those devices.

@TheMash84
@TheMash84 4 жыл бұрын
However, if you have the 15" and you usualy play game, with the 120w you could avoid battery drain when using heavy loads on SB2, as the power consumption of the SB2 could be more than PSU capability to deliver power to the unit. This issue is well documented on the web. Also, Microsoft recognised this as an issue.

I'm disappointed with the CPU they chose for the Book 3. It's always behind in performance by 10-30% (depending on what you're doing) compared to same products in that tier.

@yamamancha
@yamamancha 4 жыл бұрын
@@neoperol No, and I get that the Surface line has deftly defined it's own category. I spent hours looking for an alternative to the SP3 but ultimately upgraded to the SP6, because there's nothing like it. My problem is that using the SB as intended in it's unique category still requires creation and production. Transferring, rendering, exporting. The SB is slower at doing those tasks than the other products at the same price points with similar case uses. Despite the massive internal surface area, which you'd think would enable so creative cooling solutions, they continue to only offer a only mid-tier cpu at the top of the product line. The stayed with 2x USB 3.1 and 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2x1. A much better port configuration would have been 1x USB 3.1, 1x HDMI, and 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. Instead, they left USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 for the Surface Dock 2, a $259 accessory. Keeping 2 Type A ports is just lazy and outdated at this point. Despite sticking with Intel, they don't offer TB3. Even with drawing, the Surface has not managed to catch up to Wacom pens and apparently has fallen behind the Apple Pencil (according to my designer/artist). So while the screen, tablet, and keyboard are awesome, ultimately the hit you take to performance thus productivity make this SB a tough sale to it's true target audience. The adoption of USB 4.0 would make the Book much more attractive but that doesn't fix the processing deficiencies.

@@yamamancha I'm a Web Developer, I use the SB because I don't want to pay 1k for a Cintiq or an iPad. I draw in Photoshop I can guess I'm not the only one doing work with it. There are a lot of tablets for drawing, a lot laptops for youtubers, a lot of laptops for gaming and rendering, but is hard to get one for you and all you need. The SB does all I need. Draw, Design, Code and Gaming, I guess there are laptops that would do one of those things better, but atm this one is the one that does it all for me.
@yamamancha
@yamamancha 4 жыл бұрын
@@neoperol I still have to understand how CPU TDP works for the i7-1065g7 and if you can configure it for 25w all the time. However, the i7-1068NG7 would be the better configuration if 6 cores isn't an option due to cooling. I am mostly just disappointed because this is an Apple-like move (barely an update) saving the best features for a separate, high-priced accessory. I was really banking on the SB3 being more of a no-compromise package in terms of performance, and not just use concept.

I'm a fan of surface line up but it's 3 years and really not much improvement. Surface fans should always address what improvements it really needs so that they can improve. I heard surface book is not a comfortable use as laptop as keyboard are light and tablets are heavy and pens are not that great for premium price. And surface go specs of hardware are really too costly.

This 80% in under an hour is nonsense. Sure, it'll charge 80% in an hour, but then it takes another hour for the other 20%! So is Microsoft encouraging me to use my device when not on a full charge? I for one don't unplug ANY of my devices until they reach a full 100% charge.

What surface ecosystem are you talking about? Is this a cult like apple ownership? No, I have one Surface Pro (Microsoft doesn't send stuff for free to everyone) because it fit my needs well and last-gen sale really hit a good spot for me. I really don't understand what makes you so hyped up about dock devices that are way way overpriced and also inferior if you compare them to what other mobile devices do with power delivery or data/peripheral hubs. I would much much rather buy stuff with universal connectors and superior data rates that is also cheaper. With still no thunderbolt and quadro rtx being locked outside consumer reach makes me wonder who is this upgrade was targeted for. Probably people who were going to buy any new surface devices regardless of the specs.

@NL0Gwenster
@NL0Gwenster 4 жыл бұрын
You can still buy the "business" variants as a consumer. So that RTX isn't really that locked in. Case in point: I`m a regular consumer and i got the Go 1's business version with LTE. But yeah I hear you on ecosystem. The only "nice" thing about the surface connector is that it's magnetic. But i personally don't care for that. For both my Book 2, and Go 1 I chucked away the surface charger and been using my Satechi 108W desk charger over USB-C. Both also charge with my anker USB-C PD powerbank (28.000 model and 13.400 model) and as a dock. I use a Dell D6000 Dock which is like 2 years old now ? Works fine on everything, even Macs. Since it's based on Displaylink.
@frankfeng2701
@frankfeng2701 4 жыл бұрын
Agree. The magnetic connection is the only merit of Surface Dock. Other than that, a regular user is still better off carrying a Type c PD charger on the go and use whatever older type c accessories already owned at home or office.
