An active digitizer is not suppose to work like a capacitive stylus, so don't expect it to work like your finger on the screen. I see so many of the Surface reviews where the digitizer is considered a mark against the unit because the reviewer can't see a use for it. The suggestion that the digitizer is "an afterthought" shows an almost complete lack of knowledge of just how deeply touch and pen input are integrated into both the Surface Pro line and Windows8.

If they are going to make a marketing claim that this will replace your tablet they better damn well conform to the heuristics of what a "tablet" in the sense they are using it, is meant to do. You can't advertiser this as a tablet and then have many features missing with the pen that people are expecting from a tablet. How hard would it be for them to implement proper scrolling modes so that we can also use this to navigate the interface, the MOBILE INTERFACE, mind you? I don't want to take out their stupid pen that they give no silo for to do a mouse task and then have to find somewhere else to put it while I use my finger as the scrolling pad. Even a mouse will have a jog wheen these days so that you can easily scroll up and down a page. Don't act so smug.

Erica Griffin Once again you confuse the functions of an active digizer pen with that of a capacitive stylus. One is a pin point device with pressure sensitivity, context buttons, access to mouse functions and employs palm rejection, the other is a stick that simulates the electrical properties of your finger. I've use a stylus with tablets and it is useless to do multi-touch functions and when you are using a program that allows drawing or writting all navigation functions are via multi-touch gestures so you either have to put the stylus down, roll it into your palm or use your other hand. Then of course there is the issue of not being able to touch the screen with any other part of your body while using the stylus forcing you to try and write with your hand suspended in the air or use a cloth or modified glove in order to work naturally. On top of that the average capacitive stylus has all the accuracy of a dull crayon. To work off one of your other gripes, where is the stylus storage on an iPad or Android tablet? Your argument boils down to "Why doesn't it work like an iPad?" Well when used like most people use tablets, with their hands, the Surface functions as well or better than the iPad. The digitizer pen adds functionality that the iPad can not touch. I have a Surface Pro2 and would never argue that it is a replacement for my 17" laptop, but this mainly due to the requirements of the programs I run. The SP2 is however one of the most important tools that I use nearly everyday. As a mobile work platform it far exceeds the limited functionality of any iOS or Android device while maintaining the same ease of use and portability. In most cases I use the digitizer as a mouse to acces the full functionality of the Windows programs I use in the field. This can not be done with a capacitive stylus. If you are going to give people "advice" on the functionality of equipment you need to learn to look past your own narrow use for the device.

chrisose That last line of yours should be read and drilled into the heads of anyone who wants to review any sort of device whatsoever. Tech bloggers and journalists these days assume that their use cases are identical to everyone elses'. I'm sure that if they were asked to review a FitBit, they'd have no idea where to start.

Erica Griffin That's why genetics gave us fingers and Microsoft gave us an active digitizer pen. They work for different tasks. If the pen worked like a normal finger or stylus, then that would kinda... I don't know... completely defeat the purpose? When using my iPad, I use my stylus for writing, and my finger for scrolling. The difference between these two tasks is that writing needs to be extremely precise, while scrolling does not. Why would I waste my time with a stylus when scrolling? Using a finger makes so much more sense, and feels so natural.

you complained a lot about the pen. pen is used to draw and write. its not yout cheap capacitive pen on your ipad to use to type and scroll. Much like in the real world, you write using the pen, flip pages using your fingers. Its common sense and the designer of the pen and tablet have that kind of common sense.

It needs both functions to be fully usable and worth having on a mobile minded device. It should be able to scroll through the metro UI plain and simple. If they want to infiltrate the tablet market, they need to do this and I bet you they will within the next iteration or Goodluck getting tablet users to switch to this as their main tablet. As times change, so do our expectations of interfaces and how to navigate them. There is no point in having a utensil that allows you to do mouse commands bit doesn't not include the jog wheel like a mouse usually does.
@EricaGriffin

It just becomes a hassle of where to put it as soon as I want to use my hand to scroll through the interface. It's not natural. Not anymore for a "tablet".

Erica Griffin Point taken. Some people say, the back side of the pen should have been an eraser and you can flip the pen like a pencil and use it as an eraser instead of pusing another button (hover the other end of the pen and use as an eraser). That made a lot of sense. While there into designing that thing, they can make it a capacitive one so that you can just flip the pen and use it to scroll when outside onenote.

IE isn't bad at all in Windows 8 and it's the best game in town on a touch screen. I know it's hip to hate IE and that's what all the cool kids are doing, but if you actually give it a chance, it's really good. It even has built-in adblock capability. I prefer Chrome on a desktop, but I use IE exclusively on my Surface Pro 3.

There is a fix for the calibration issues. It has to do with the graphics driver. If you install the right version of the driver (im assuming the latest) it fixes the issue. Ive found this to work for me, and a few others who tried it out

I'm sorry for not having any sources for this but I read this article, maybe a month ago, that said that according to [some display testing firm/site?], the display in the SP3 was overall the best display they had tested, and the biggest factor in it's overall score was it's color accuracy.

The badoomtch microsoft official said that they kept the keyboard as a separate for several reason, to keep the original surface price low,.. it is LOW compare to similar form factor, to allow user to choose keyboard of their liking, whether the attached type key *in many colors, or use their existing bluetooth keyboard...

Erica Griffin I actually liked your review better than LinusTechTips . I liked how you were a bit more objective with your review. I wish you would have put more emphasis on the expandability of Windows over IOS and Android as I would have overlooked the flaws as the usability of USB 3.0 and the flexibility of DisplayPort makes up for the few shortcomings. With the i7 version, you could potentially replace a desktop with this. If you use an Acer T272HL with this, it would prove how much more capable the SP3 is over a dedicated mobile device. I respect your opinion a lot though.

I like what Linus from LinusTechTips thinks about it. If you are going to use it as a laptop, than things like Dell XPS are better, because you have that convenience of being able to type more easily when sitting on a bench or even standing. But I would add to this, that when you are going to use it as a tablet really often then Surface pro is better. And if windows 10 comes to Surface it will be awesome

I don't know, for many people the only stupid thing about WIndowsPhone is that it doesn't have that many apps. But imagine if the windows 10 between device communication was seamless. SamoScopom It's not about the number of apps available, it's about how they don't look and work as they do on android. Microsoft has their own vision about how stuff should happen and when they own something they apply that vision on to it.... That's why Skype and so many other programs are now so much less used.

The Surface line has been great since inception and the Surface pro 3 is amazing. Is a real computer that gives a form factor that anything that competes directly with cant match. Using Illustrator or Photoshop or a 3d modeling program or moving through spreadsheets are just some of the things that take on a new dimension using the SP3 I think lots of people that don't like it or come to grips with the Surface line is they are expecting it to feel like a laptop.... but its not a laptop. It delivers the functions of a laptop but its not going to or suppose to feel like a laptop. Once you grasp the feel of a Surface its excellent.

+donofman if your using it for heavy usage with a heavy cpu it'll throttle and the blogger is wrong!. it'll throttle with photoshop, video editing , also had throttle with light room. and pretty much any programs that tax the cpu. if your graphics designer like me. use a usb fan blowing on the upper right corner on the back of the surface pro3 and it wont throttle. even the guys in the Microsoft store will admit using a fan like that will increase the performance by 60%. as for the calibration as such most all that was addressed in wndows 10. the blogger needs to re review this with windows 10 in stead of crappy win 8 and I guarantee she will change her mind on a lot of her opinions.

Tyrion Lannister I was running those programs on a Dell studioXP with a 500GB HD, 4GB of RAM, on a intel Core Duo through college like 4-5 yrs ago.... and the new programs are normally much less intense on resources. I don't think you can make hour long Hollywood movie grade effects in the fastest time frame but even and i5 surface pro could be fine. The HD really doesn't matter since you can just use an external.

Erica I can't find a single mention online of the calibration issues that you are mentioning, and even if it is very prominent I can't imagine why it would not be fixable with an update, especially considering how frequently Microsoft is updating its surface line. Also you forgot to mention that photoshop has already released an update( or is about to, not sure) that fixes the scalability problem. Oh and I love internet explorer and know quite a few people that do, apart from the absence of plugins (which I don't care about) it is very fast, stable and secure nowadays

I got the wife the I7 version of Surface Pro 3 and it works wonders for her. Citrix and other remote applications work great on this so I see it a a big plus for anyone in a business environment. So far I'm able to get it to use 2 monitors of my triple monitor setup. This makes it a triple monitor for her as the screen on it counts as another. Seems to run just fine in this setup but tempted to get the base stand for it to setup the full triple monitor for her.

Did you drop a sweat at 6:00!? I had a Surface Pro 3 last year for 15 days, was an i7 256. It kept getting uncomfortably hot once I start working on it so I returned it. The girl working at Microsoft store convinced me to exchange it for a newer one. I did and it still kept getting hot. Was thinking of downgrading to i5 but I felt bad having opened 2 boxes already! Does yours get hot during heavy use? Now I have a pre-order on the Surface Pro 4 i5 256 just in case. 6th generation Intel supposedly runs cooler than 5th.

CupcakeJunkie yea but it was getting REALLY hot! Put it on someone's face and they'll freak out. I also ran the second one in store and had people touching it and going wild till the manager asked me to stop. Thought I was paid by apple to do that and bring sp3 reputation down. I freaking hate apple... But they kept saying there are "some" i7 units that run pretty hot than usual and those are defects so that's why I'm a little bit here and there on sp3. And that's true about sp4, I read better cooling system with a cooler processor. I'm supposed to pick my i5 up tomorrow and I'm starting to regret not going for the i7...

No, she was just using the MSFT supplied drivers, and not the newest one from the chipmaker. You realize this isn't an iPad competitor, but more a MacBook replacement. This is a desktop class PC with a touch interface, not like some iPhone. Hope you realize that. BIG difference. There is a catalog of 700,000 apps for the iPad. There are over 4.5 million apps for Windows 8.1, and powerful stuff at that. They don't design bombs on iPads, they use PCs for a reason.

Hi, I found out that my SP3 grayscale has been fixed by installing the latest Intel graphics drivers. There is an explanation in the section “How to Fix the Banding / Posterization Issue on Surface Pro 3” at photographylife.com/microsoft-surface-pro-3-banding-and-calibration That worked for my SP3 after restarting it. -Josh

Also, in the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel, I set the Color Settings to Brightness: 7 (a value of 0 is nominal), Contrast: 40, Gamma: 1.

How come the Surface 2 is better for gaming than the Surface 3?
@EricaGriffin
@EricaGriffin 9 жыл бұрын
The surface pro 2 and i5 surface pro 3 are the same but the surface pro 3 is thinner and not able to sustain speeds as long.
@steveswanson6280
@steveswanson6280 9 жыл бұрын
I feel a bit doofy trying to follow up, Erica Griffin but the Surface 3 has one less fan than the 2. That combined with the thinner frame causes the CPU to throttle back (slow down) in order to not overheat. However this really only happens in sustained use, as Erica noted. Most common use case: gaming.

This review is a perfect example of why women should not be reviewing technological innovations. 1) I don't care if you're a 5 foot dwarf. 2) You clearly don't understand the benefits of an active digitizer pen. 3) Basing a buying decision on your ability to view "Mean Girls" or some other chick flick on Netflix is absurd. Do the world a favor and stop reviewing computers. Please!
@MrKiltak

Bienville25 lol, about 3) calibration is also important for image/video editing... on the other hand any person seriously working on that area will have access to a calibrator (use Spyder myself) so I don't see a problem there.

I used this device while completing half of my M.A. degree in NYC. Twas the best decision I made, I felt that writing a paper with Surface pro 3 is a breeze. Normally, there is that dragging feeling of opening a n ultrabook or a laptop but I don't feel that with Surface Pro, maybe because it looks like a tablet. The keybord is comfortable to use. After 8 hours of typing, I didn't feel any strain in my hands. I travel with this device and it's so light, even with the cord, you won't feel the burden of carrying a laptop/tablet. I have completed projects, presentations even audio/video editing using this device and true to the marketing promise, it really can replace a laptop. I pen is so helpful especially during lectures, when you need to screen capture a slide and add notes to it. I have organized all my notes in each course through one note. I also finished 5 chapters of a book with it. So 2 thumbs up Microsoft!

I'm loving my Surface Pro 3 so far! I bought it to replace a Lenovo Ideapad Y580 since I assembled a gaming desktop and needed something extremely portable. Now for someone who only needs to play WoW and the occasional abroad Netflix, this thing is pretty nifty. I bought the i5, 256GB, 8GB ram model, and even with the thermal throttling (and if you lower your expectations) you can play WoW at 1440p on low at anything between 17FPS and 47FPS.

Love my Surface Pro with i7 and 256 Gb memory. I've been totally blown away at what this thing can do. It's just really hard to believe it's a full blown PC. This is my go to home PC. I don't game on PC - that's what the consoles are for... I've done CAD work, etc. with this and no issues. Expensive but justifiably worth it in my case.

I actually just got a surface pro3(i5) and I love it. Installed the tuck purview to get back the start menu and all of the features I got used to by running the preview on my old laptop, and ant wait for"continuity" to be added. I honestly love the pen with the onscreen handwriting keyboard when I'm not using the type cover. I also haven't seen any thermal throtling, but I haven't used any games. P.S. the only thing I like internet explorer for is downloading chrome
