Blows me away that the defining characteristics of a "good" and "bad" laptop is photo and video editing software? What percentage of people actually use Adobe software or equivalents? What about multi tasking with 5-10 windows in 3-4 browser sessions and using visual code to build apps, assemblies, and solutions? There are other jobs out there that aren't content creators. Maybe one day other content creators will figure out that the world doesn't revolve around them.

Exactly, if I got this it would be for a content consumption device, web browsing, hopefully eventually oxygen not included etc. It reminds me of how the average purchaser of an iPad Pro is not actually a professional and got it because it's design is so much better than the regular iPad.

Hit the nail on the head. You buy the tool built for you. Every mixed review shows Adobe not working well because most other apps work well.

Exactly right. That is the problem with the reviewers. Since all they do is video edit (which is less than 1 percent of total population), their all reviews are based on thunberbolt 3, lightroom, video editing. Its like who gives a shit mate. This always bugs me.

If you don't Game or use Adobe apps this thing flies. I wouldn't know mine didn't have an Intel processor if I didn't know better. I'm absolutely thrilled with mine. Incredible display. Reviewers are all media creators, they've all come to ARM devices with a heavy level of bias. I'd happily recommend this to almost anyone.

This has to be the best review I have seen. It's one of the first that I have seen which doesn't automatically assume that 'Pros' only use computers for Photo and Video editing. This review takes a fair and balanced look at what the device is, what it offers and does point out it's weaknesses. Thanks for the fair, balanced review Daniel.

Agreed. When I saw people say, "Yeah it can't run Photoshop" I was literally like "wtf? Who cares?" That right there is a niche market too.

I bought one the back end of last year, I’m just a normal guy & it does EVERYTHING I need on a daily basis if this sounds like you then get it! There are far too many so called professional reviewers who are just looking for problems, ADOBE professional stuff costing hundreds of bucks won’t run “this automatically means the Surface Pro X is shit”! My car stalls when I try to run it up a 80 degree slope therefore it’s shit as well, same logic! & just as flawed.

Thank you for this review. I'm a little biased as I'm currently typing this on my Surface Pro X, but when I was deciding to purchase it, I noticed that every "bad" review brought up the subject of photo or video editing, which I simply do not do on ANY laptop. It struck me as such a niche complaint. On the other hand, the Pro X is, as you say, a niche product for the niche I'm working in (MS Office + Scrivener). Love the keyboard (vague bounce notwithstanding), the screen size, the pen storage, etc. Battery life is all right for me and my uses. The LTE is great and I used it on the road for a video conference just the other day. I could lounge in the backseat while we were cruising down the interstate. The cameras were excellent, as were the microphones. Like you, I may just opt to use this all the time for my video conferences.

At last an intelligent look at this device. I bought the Surface Go LTE for portability to do adult work, a complete package with the keyboard, pen and mouse. Then I saw the unveiling of this device, and Microsoft in New York was gracious and exchanged that device for this new one, I don't regret it. The biggest plus, a bigger screen and the device still fits into the same compartment in my work bag. I listen to music while commuting via metro, and I use this device because I hate notification interruptions while using a phone, and the reproduction is superb with a Sony WH-H900N headphones. I even started watching movies on this device! Thanks for a fair, impartial and sound review.

Yes! Thank you! This review explains what actualy is Surface Pro X. I tried explaining to people but they don't get the idea of portability and what ARM chips will bring, no heat, no fan noise. When I am not working I just want to relax, scroll the internet or stream a movie and with my laptop, as thin and light as it is (MacBook Pro 15 inch retina, with bootcamp windows) sometimes it heats up in my lap, it gets heavy to hold while watching or scrolling. I tavel alot and carring a 4.5 lbs laptop does get heavy. This Surface Pro X is a goto device for me.

It's amazing that we have options of Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm right now. It's just too bad Microsoft didnt work on ARM w desktop OS earlier or at least continue Windows phone OS. Then maybe native ARM support would be much further (as it is with iOS and Android), and Intel wouldn't have been able to sit on its butt all these years.

For me on Verizon in a major city it's fast. I easily get over 150 down and 50 up and I've seen the speeds go higher, that's just the average at my home. With Verizon if you have an unlimited smartphone plan you can get a truly unlimited tablet plan. I use my Pro X on LTE exclusively and I've been chomping through over 500GB on the Pro X each month and Verizon hasn't throttled me at all and I've been doing this since the launch of the Pro X.

I would love that CPU in the surface go shape. Even with the thick bezels, for that 'hold it because you are using it as an e-reader' jam. Ive had this for about 3 weeks as my main work laptop. i love it. I'm not installing photoshop, or premiere pro etc... Edge ARM64 works really well and give my 95% apps that i use (gmail, slack, hubspot, o365, google drive). I use a couple apps in emulated x86 mode such as Zoom and VLC and I cant tell if they lag or not. Overall, i love the form factor, the mobility, the battery, and that i can charge it via PD charger USB-C. one charger to rule them. I plugged it into my voltage reader and got 19.5V @ 1.5A for 30W which is about half as fast as the included stupid proprietary brick and connector. BUT, it still charges in a couple of hours, so i'm good to ditch the brick. I dont use the pen, or the lte (takes me 30 seconds to tether in the occasional instance that i'm not in wifi). I do have a powerful desktop that i use for heavy x86 apps and games, but i use this device to replace my laptop that comes with me to work everyday and on trips. I'm not sure if this would work if it was your ONLY computer. Happy to answer more questions if anyone has any.

I think the biggest gripe most have with this device is the cost-benefit factor. You lose a lot, but gain minimal. In other words, there are other options capable of doing these tasks, but at a much more appealing value.

Same as any other Windows computer because it runs Windows 10 Home. If you stick to legitimate websites and applications, you'll be fine with the built in Microsoft Defender. If you're going to be visiting dodgy websites and downloading dodgy applications... You may be safer with a third party antivirus software. I bought a 2020 12.9 iPad Pro with LTE and the new Magic Keyboard and I tried it for about 3 weeks and I gotta say I wasn't impressed. I've had the Surface Pro X with the 256gb SSD and 16GB of RAM since launch and I just can't switch. No matter how much Apple seems to change iPadOS and whatever new accessories come out I just can't use it happily. Yes the iPad Pro is fast, has a lot of apps and is just very simplistic but that simplicity is what kills me. I feel like I'm so limited with iPadOS! Even with the ARM limitations I feel like the Surface Pro X just wipes the floor with the iPad Pro. I hate that the Files app is just trash compared to File Explorer, I don't like that everything runs in little containers and there's no contextual menus for almost anything. The Surface Pro X isn't perfect, but for me it's just miles head of the iPad in terms of being a useful device. I really hope Microsoft sticks to ARM Surface devices because with more innovation and more optimization the Surface ARM train could be unstoppable.

Why can't they give us an intel chipset with all the cool features of the X? I'm seriously torn between the X and 7. I do mainly use my surface for simple tasks, reading, browsing, note-taking, but every now and then I like to see how far I can push it. Like running Civ V on my surface pro 4 (it works but gets hot!) The surface pro 4 has been my friend for many years now and I love it, but I'm starting to feel the itch to upgrade and can not decide. Wish I could just borrow a surface pro x for awhile. Obviously, since I still have the 4, I'm not the type to upgrade every time something new comes out, so I dont want to grab the X and find out ARM development is going to be slow as molasses and run into all kinds of issues in the future. When does the 8 come out? lol
@liquidmojo
@liquidmojo 5 жыл бұрын
The Surface Pro X is beautiful. If, and this is a big if, you can find the ARM versions of all the primary apps that you need to run, then this would be ideal. It's definitely a conundrum since the vast majority of the apps out there are made for desktop x64, and the less sleek, older form factor (but updated internals) Surface Pro 7 would run those apps better. Its bewildering that the ARM version of even Microsoft Edge wasn't available at launch, but it's good to see it available now. This was a risky move for Microsoft, with the Surface Pro vying against the likes of the iPad Pro to be the ultimate lightweight hybrid that can replace most user's laptops in functionality, but I see that Microsoft is "playing the long game" with this move, by pushing the more mobile ready ARM processor onto their newest Surface form factor, while relegating the one that can run x64 apps onto the previous form factor with USB C (finally), fast charging and updated processor selections.

@@msp5138 True, but any of the Surface Pro 2-in-1’s although that have the form factor are also barely functional as standalone tablets. This may change a bit when Windows 11 finally unlocks the Amazon Store Apps you may have a slightly better tablet experience with the right apps. Still if you are looking for a better computer the Surface Pro 7 is still a better experience than the Surface Pro X or X2. Apple will probably not add full computer functionality to their iPad Pro line because ultimately they don’t want to cannibalize their MacBook sales, but if they decided to flip the switch and upgraded their iPad OS, the hardware can more than handle it, especially with their M1 iPad Pro lineup.

I have always been a surface fan boy. But I will never say it is the end all device it is for a specific class of user. But I also say if one never plans to use the surface as tablet at least 30-50% of the time then they should turn to a different device. You buy this device for form factor and aesthetics. I take notes daily (handwritten in OneNote) and I've used Surface Go + Surface pen (good but startup / wake time blunts it's usefulness), 2018 iPad+Pencil (very workable but nowhere to store the pencil), SPX+Flat pen = Dream machine for note taking. Haven't used an iPad pro but would guess it is way better than the 2018 iPad (the 1st non-Pro that supported pencil 1), Not sure the ProX kills the iPad pro by this criteria I'd say they were fairly well matched. I went SPX because I like the surface line and the form factor and prefer W10 to IOS. Totally agree with "As a laptop there are better options".

I live in OneNote and the Pro X is a dream machine for ON, I take hand written notes in the UWP App and use the TabletPro app to give put useful functions at the touch of a thumb. The slim pen is not as heavy as the older last gen pen and I find the non-round shape makes it easier to 'find' the button. During my working day I rarely use the keyboard (but it is handy to protect the screen as I wander around the office) but at night (leisure activities) I do tend to use keyboard for anything more than a single line of text (eg. Typing this on keyboard but navigated to site using onscreen keyboard). As for responsive/smoothness etc it feels better than my surface go but that might just be my appreciation of the extra screen space on the Pro X. The instant On of the Pro X means it is just as quick to write on the Pro X as a paper pad & pen would be (a frustration with the 'Go') although I almost prefer the iPad touch login over the Pro X 'Hello' but maybe I'll get used to staring at my pro x. So yeah, really great machine for 'just note taking' just it bit on the pricey side but I would buy another one tomorrow if anything happened to this one.

@@bradavon UWP for taking handwritten notes, less clutter on the screen and the sync engine is amazing (I do doodles - sorry 'Technical diagrams' on the SPX that instantly update on my works PC that I'm sharing the screen in meetings). Tablet Pro (Not specifically a OneNote thing) is like a vertical toolbar where you can assign actions to buttons eg Undo/Redo, change Pen, next page/prev page that I can action with my thumb without interrupting my 'flow' with the pen. Still use ON 2016 for OneTastic add-on (every month I generate diary pages where I hand write notes) and I tend to use the Outlook integration with ON2016 for Meetings/Emails and then scrawl all over the pages with the pen in UWP. I think I've kind of just got used to the UWP version (but I've been a ON user since the 2010 version) for note taking and ON2016 for anything heavy and happy to flip between the two as required (but I'm probably killing disc space for the cache for both?).
