Among other shows, we saw the Steve Martin show he speaks of. Yep, he led us out to the pier, improv the whole time, saying whatever was on his mind. I’m kinda tickled that Steve Martin remembers that, ‘cause I sure do.

I had forgotten all the different people and groups that performed at the Bear. I had moved to HB in 63 at the age of 15 but didn't start going there a lot until after 1970. There were a number of small clubs in OC and life was good for a 20 something back then. One thing that wasn't brought up was how small the Bear really was. We were packed in tight but we were also up close with the performers. Thank God there was never a fire!!

Trip on this... I grew up in H.B. 1969 to 1989. My father was a stand-up comic in So. Cal. from the late 50's through 1965. He appeared at the Golden Bear in 1964. It was owned by Delbert Kaufman at the time. Fast forward to 2012. I work for a custom meat processing company. We have a country store and a restaurant in So. Oregon. Delbert Kaufman built all the wood tables and chairs in this restaurant. He has stories!

In '72 I arrived to the GB to see my musical hero, Paul Butterfield, who by that time was leaving his blues numbers behind, and had "evolved" into blues jazz fusion. God was I disappointed, crushed as a matter of fact. But the GB always came thru with the great harmonica players...Charlie Musselwhite, Rod Piazza, George Smith. Now those were the memorable nights at the GB.

I was lucky to see Paul Butterfield Blues Band in '67 at the Bear. Pat Paulsen was on before Butterfield. It was a small venue for groups, but that made it soooo enjoyable. Up close and personal !!

In the artifacts held by the City of HB was a stone with "Olson" on it. That is a construction/development/management company that still exists down I believe in Newport. You may want to check on that.

Why doesn’t HB have a museum to save its history? They said they hoped it would be in a small museum… Such a rich history, and it’s hidden… Why has our history been hidden for so long? Is there something to hide? History should never be hidden…
