The Gentle Lady is a true lady. As with other, this was also my first model airplane in the early 80’s, and I had it for 40 plus years. It would be nice if someone would bring it back. A close flying approximation is the Night Radian, but not quite…

@@allwinds3786 Hello Ms. Anderson, sorry to hear about your Gentle Lady. Mine met its demise a couple of years ago. It decided to dive straight into the ground at 70 mph from 1,500 feet above. The onboard GoPro captured the entire flight! I will load the video on my channel for you. I'm about 100 miles north of Warren Dunes.

I saved my money, bought a kit and built it by myself when I was 10 years old. Miss those times when I kid could walk into a hobby shop and buy this kit for under $30 (1990).
@AerialWaviator4 ай бұрын
Adjusted for inflation, that would be $72 in 2024 money. This not too far off of what I'm seeing online (not including shipping, etc)
@aaronredbaron4 ай бұрын
@@AerialWaviator unfortunately kits I've seen go for more than twice that, either old or new, if they are unbuilt in the box. There aren't many modern kits like this anymore, you can get a Peter Goldsmith Designs Opal which is similar but much nicer and it cost $200 for the kit. Or you can go smaller to keep the price down, such as the 250 size Gentle Lady from Willies Nillies which can be bought for $50 for the kit.
@AerialWaviator4 ай бұрын
@@aaronredbaron True, there are a larger number of listings asking $200, but have seen more reasonable pricing. For Micro Gentle Lady kits AngelWing Designs (UK), or Aloft Hobbies (US) also ship ~1.2m (30 inch) span versions in addition to Willies Nillies. They are sub-250 grams, so avoid remote-id requirements.

"Gentle Lady" was my first glider in 1988, I made it a motorsailer. It had great performance, unfortunately I lost it in a low cloud, I was only able to recover the fuselage that today I fly with the wings of the Spirit.

The plane I learned how to fly with! Then built my own plane, a Wanderer. Wish I still had it. Thanks for posting this. Brings back good memories of relaxing afternoons slope soaring and catching thermals. Now the hills are covered in homes and you have to deal with dumb restrictions from the Feds on anything that flies and is remote controlled. Damn drones ruined the hobby IMO.

My first was a Marks Wanderer in the 70s. Great sloping off the cliffs in San Francisco much like your wonderful spot. Next was a gorgeous Graupner Cirrus that unfortunately went out to sea when I failed to switch on the receiver! I just re-covered Wanderer #4 and updated the old radio (an Ace RC kit build). I found it in my garage loft after 40 years…can’t wait to relaunch it!

me as well. Electra in mid 80's. Taught myself to fly with that wonderful plane. Use to get >30 min flight times, which was amazing considering the crude on/off motor control and the heavy NiCd pack. testament to how fantastic the design was.

Gotta shair one story. Perfect conditions one day for flying at the lake site. Pull into my regular spot with a small ridge in the park right on the water! Well a biker gang was in the spot next to me about 59 yards over! I'm setting up the Gentle Lady and the inebriated bikers started snickering thing about " he's going to play with his little toy airplane" ect. ect ! Well I just launched into a light wind coming across the lake straight into the small ridge. Soar up and down the ridge getting higher each pass and after about 5 passes I was high enough to fly to a 75' ridge 50 yards behind me. I make a few passes back and forth then a thermal came through and so I cored it and specked out. The jokes had subsided and oooos and aaaas took there place! I then flew was out over the lake and did loops rolls stalls then came down and back to the small ridge and after a couple of soaring passes flew down and buzzed the bikers then flew it back and cought it in my hand! I got a standing ovation from the bikers!!!

How does it get energy from the wind?
@SlopeRCGliders4 ай бұрын
The wind is coming from the sea and is being forced up over the slope. The glider is effectively always flying downhill through the wind, just like a bike getting energy from rolling down a hill. But because the wind is rising up over the hill the glider doesn’t loose height.
