Probably one of the best helming sessions I have had to date. About 30/35 kts of wind, 3/4 meters swell, and the beautifull sailing machine that CV26 is. Uner code 3 spinnaker, we shred the waves at more that 25kts, such a blast!

I saw a man in command sailing a 12 meter boat @ 30 Knots and then the doldrums. Sir Francis Chichester once said "Any one can sail around the world sober. It takes a true sailor to sail around the world drunk." Its not alcohol that bring ya courage it's your heart, mind, and soul. Wind to your back, SAILOR!

One of the most surreal experiences I've had is surfing at night, coming back to Vancouver from Hawaii. When the universe is black and the only light is the instruments and the phosphorescence of the waves, you feel as though the boat is being picked up by the hand of god and thrown forward into infinity.

This must be one of the best sailing videos out there. For the first time, I feel like I’ve seen what real sailing is. I know the racing aspect is very different from cruising. But to experience that boat shooting over the waves, your joy at grabbing the wind and using it to fly across the water, the crew learning “on the job” as their every move will make a difference in the boat’s performance... I’ll be watching this one again. And probably again after that.

Watch dinghy races if you want to see "real sailing". Dinghies not only fly across the water but in some cases crew stand on the windward rails of the boat and hang their entire bodies over the side holding on to a "trapeze" to help hold the boat down to keep it from capsizing. Dinghies are much trickier to sail because they are so much more responsive to the wind than big sailboats. You'd see these races most often on college and high school sailing teams. Of course before the boat tacks they have to be nimble enough to get back into the boat, move to the other side and hike out again on the trapeze on the other side of the boat.

@@judebug329 Yes. Imagine being on a trapeze while ALSO being responsible for the jib and maybe even a spinnaker and holding the boat down in winter! if you look up racing/sailing 420s you can find a lot more. Those dinghies are far trickier to sail, let alone sail well than a big boat. But if you can sail a sailing dinghy well, you can sail anything.

The way to get a spinnaker all the way up is to "stop" it in advance. That is you make a long sausage of it kept together with weak strings about 1meter between them. After hoisting it you pull the sheet and the strings snap and it's all there nice and clean. The harder the wind and the higher the mast the better to use this method.

Interesting to see the setup of the boat! I'm intrigued to how useful the preventer that's rigged in the video would be in a crash gybe, and why you would want one anyway, generally there's enough flex in the ropes that they don't prevent the boom swinging across in large yachts. We had one rigged down wind across the Atlantic and it did very little but become another safety hazard! Just becomes another rope to deal with during an MOB! I'm amazed how fast you get these boats sailing, what would be the difference in your upwind racing mode. I assume there wouldn't be sails just lashed on the foredeck?

Peux tu me dire combien te rapporte-t-elle par mois environ ? C'est juste histoire de comparer, considérant que nous ne jouons pas dans la même division ! Merci et encore bravo. I believe that was a gennaker sail not a spinnaker. A gennaker has the windward point made fast to the forepeak and a spinnaker that corner is attached to the spinnaker guy line which is run through an eyelet at the end of the spinnaker pole. The other end of the pole is clipped to the mast. The pole is held to windward at a position perpendicular to the wind. The spinakker guy can be made fast, but the spinnaker or gennaker sheet is never made fast and requires the constant focused attention of a crew member. The gennaker sheet is sometimes run through a block all the way aft. A gennaker is easier to control, especially jibes, and is less susceptible to "rounding up". Can I crew on your boat now?

Very good description of the life at sea. One thing does surprise me. The crew does not seem very concerned with the weight distribution on the boat, more often sitting to leeward than windward. Quite often they sit at the forward end of the cockpit even when the boat is sailing very fast. Why not move backwards to balance the boat?

The Sailing Frenchman Surfing at 30kts with a 40 tons racing boat: what could go wrong? Epic video footage and story line. Video did not fail to show the tilt of the boat and the violent sea. My Suggestion, last song choice was great But more tension in background song choice was needed. What you have here is a lay backed look at a sailing race, all good if you want to convince your grand mother to go out with you. Take a look at Erik Aanderaa , " Sailing Alone to FAIR ISLE" . That fog horn sounding in the back ground will follow me to my grave as one of the most hunting sounds of my life and the footage= fantastic. As this is, it is the best look/incite at Racing a sailboat I have seen. Great work.
