Cruising on the Waterborne Koastal 60" Surfskate

Hey. Thanks a lot, really, for putting these videos out. They helped me build enough confidence to buy a Carver CX Hobo, and the rest is history!! Surfskating has taken over my after-work schedule, and I don't think I've inline skated at all since I got the board at the beginning of summer 2023. Speaking of which, I noticed that the balance and body mechanics of surfskating are very similar to rollerblading. Once I made that connection, I was able to use some of the same techniques I used while inline skating for surfskating. Thanks for the great videos! I'm 39, n ripping it up here in Eugene, OR. On Koastal Drifter, i've changed the Carver CX trucks for Paris V2 180mm, wedged 6° front and rear (so 56° each truck). Knuckles soft bushings + Riptide pivot cups. This set up keeps the board turning well, adding a bit of stability. The big advantage is that it mimics better than the CX the natural surf longboard moves i can feel from the rear : a sensation like a pivot point we have in single fin surf longboard. To be more accurate : i feel from the rear truck a mix of pivot (turning on a point) and a carve (keeping the flow in a curve as we can do with thruster fins set up). Very interesting. I discover Orangatang Durian (75mm, 80a), works very well on this big baby, big wheels but not so large contact patch and round lips so it remains lively.

I've just ordered Koastal Drifter 2 + Carver CX trucks + Riptide pink bushings (87,5) + Hamboards 83mm wheels. Curious to test bigger wheels to land paddle in the forest close to my home. Let's see. Maybe wedging the rear truck could be a tuning option. Feedback after first session in some days.

⁠@@SurfskateLoveOf course with pleasure. ÉDIT : i've just made my first session. First of all, with Carver CX, risers height is touchy. I've mounted 14cm risers first and rapidly noted that i would have wheelbite on the rear truck and risky on the front (i try Hamboards 83mm 80a). I changed for 24cm risers and that seems to be enough. Koastal Drifter is not a board you want to carry so long, but when i made my first turns, i immediatly appreciate the smooth rail to rail surf feeling. It's physical to pump but pumpable (83mm may be too big for this). Speed roll + keep rolling is really very good, also to feel free to roll over pebles. With a land paddle, this board makes all that sense. It still turns sharply and my night session drive me for a longer distance that what i had planned. For my weight (70kg), i would have appreciate a bit more flexy deck, but flex is present, it's not a stiff board. Pumping uphill is not the game of this set up, but it shines on flat carving and small decline. The sharp turning radius of the CX makes that i never felt locked on a too big board. Back to home i made a bit more tension on the rear truck and less on the rear (minimum tension) with Riptide pink (87,5a) on both trucks. Target : improve the balance between front and rear. Also put some surf wax in rear pivot cup (Carver stock) which was terribly squeaky (now it's fixed).

Great video Steve, as usual. Have you compared Carver CX trucks vs Waterborne on this kind of longboard (50-60) ? Which one of both would provide more pump accélération on longboard ?

@@SurfskateLove Fine, thanks, i'm coming back to land paddle after summer longsupsurfing. EDIT : Just tested the Carver CX trucks on the Kahuna Pohaku Wahine 48, it works very well, better than Slide trucks because of more control and i think better pump acceleration. The deck is very flexy and i had fun to play with 3 different energies : paddle (land paddle), pumpability of the truck + pumpability of the flex deck, it allows to breathe and vary propulsion forces, lot and lot of fun. Here in Paris, there are many good dancers on longboards, but opening the game with surfskate trucks + dancing + paddle (in my case) opens a whole new world, no limits.

Have you tried Alpha 2 Revenge trucks on Koastal Drifter (or Alpha 1) ? Do they feel enough surfy when we use to ride surfskate trucks or do they feel a bit too locked ?

Honestly, on a 40" surfskate you can stand wherever you want (as long as you're behind the front bolts)! Move around, play around with it, and have fun! But this may also help: surfskate.love/surfskate-foot-position/
