Hamboards Review (Pescadito and Burst Models)

In this video I review the Hamboards Pescadito and Burst models and explain why I don't categorize them as surfskates.

This is spot on. Hamboards don't ride anything like Carver or YOW. However, if you surf or snowboard, try a Burst. You can really pick up speed and carve like you are on snow or water.

Hamboards has an interesting marketing department..... I've messaged them suggesting they offer a longboard model with a swinging front truck like a Meraki or Smoothstar, but they were staunchly uninterested and set in their mindset of how surf emulator skateboards should be. I firmly believe that a whole other market is waiting to be tapped that people will love just as much as short boards once they learn to ride longboard surfskates, how they excel at being ridden. Steve, if you ever have a chance, I highly recommend throwing a Meraki on the front of a Hamboards Logger or similar board and spend a few days getting used to it. When I first rode Long wheelbase Surfskates I tried to ride them like short boards and was sorely disappointed until I learned to ride and carve the way the board wanted me to which brought out its strengths, and discovered some incredible and more pure feeling carving abilities. I Still love short surfskates, but people who haven't yet discovered what you can do on a long Surfskate are missing out on half of the fun on the other end of the Surfskate spectrum, especially for cruising around and riding longer distances.

How long is long?

@@jasonkiely4021 I consider long to be 40" or more. The funnest long surfskates for me are around 5.5ft-6 ft with a 44-46" wheelbase and a Meraki, Smoothstar Thruster, or similar up front.

Idk I’ve seen people absolutely rip the pescadito while pumping to keep all their speed. Just cuz it’s different doesn’t make it not a surf skate

You have to put your whole body into the pump on those Hamboards. It's not going to respond to mere ankle pumps like the carvers do. I own a Carver Greenroom, the Hunington Hop by Hamboards and just ordered their Paskowitz model. The Hamboard can pump on everything except uphill. Might be a deal breaker for some but otherwise Ive cruised around my entire neighborhood on the flats without having to put a foot down. They also roll like cadillacs going downhill. That and banks are their strength. They make you a more intuitive rider because they are harder to keep momentum so you learn to make better line choices on your runs.

I bought an original derringer 28 for $50, which has the original version of hamboards trucks. I can pump it although its impossible to wiggle. You have to pump it with full body pumping motion. The great thing about it is it's pushable and pumpable. I started off pumping longboards so I guess the motion of violently throwing my bodyweight was similar 😂

I started on a small board with HST trucks but its not a hamboard I bought a bigger hamboard because I felt I was steering with my feet on the shorter board and when I take surf classes sometimes they start you on a barndoor with a fin so I wanted something where I needed to throw my weight around

Loaded Vanguard flex 2 with Hamboards trucks (it works even if tight with less wide screws) and 4 President wheels feels amazing with ONDA carbon landpaddle stick it's the ultimate carving/sliding experience !

I do agree there are regular "surf skates" and hamboards are fundamentally different to those. I would like to say that original trucks are what the hamboards trucks are based on, while other brands of trucks exist I'm not gonna mention them because I have never used one. Pumping on Original Boards is different then "Regular Surfskates" this isn't bad just different. I love to pump on Original boards and I have personally skated with my friends and pumped an carved a majority of it. One thing I've show to every one I skate with, I can go as long as I want in a tennis court off one push just using pumping. The friends who ride regular popsicle style boards, find it so cool. so basically all I'm saying is that those boards can pump its just different because the back truck. The back truck can pump as well so this is the biggest learning curve for people learning those types or trucks, This is because they're used to being stable back there, when you are able to pump both front and back you can then pump with both sides for long distance to make it even easier, I would describe pumping on hamboards an Original as just combo turns that move you forward using the front and back trucks.

I have a 5ft hamboards logger (which I love) as well as a Carver C7 and a CX. The logger is heavy with big wheels and once going, it rolls and rolls. With practice using the trucks to add momentum happens but I agree it’s nothing like other surfskates. I enjoy it as it reminds me of surfing longboards back in the day and especially if you can find some slight inclines to go down you can have a great time. Am I glad I own one, yes it’s a lot of fun. If I was only able to have one board would I pick the Hamboard over my more ‘conventional’ Carvers. No I wouldn’t.

I have paskowitz, shorter than the burst. I agree pumping is hard, but that way you'll learn to use the compression and extension properly, I usually use it downhill, uphill is tiring, but still it's possible, I have seen people pumping cx clones just with hand and shoulder movements. I bought it because it is the only standard board available in India, but I like carving on the downhill. To pump it on even flat surface, you need proper body movements. For me, videos of shane lai are working, I'm not sure whether infinity loop is possible or not on that, but I'll try. Deck and trucks quality is pretty good. I may replace front truck with meraki eventually. They are different, I won't say bad.

finally thanks for the reveiw ! Hamboard is unique longboard concept and with the use of a street pole or a mellow downhill you can really feel the aquatic mood. As a water paddle board adept i can say that the big hamboard (classic, and fish) you can feel sensation that are similar. The hamboard logger really make me think of snowboard feeling. I'm living in a place in Canada where there is not much surf oppotunity so i cannot compare with the surf feeling.I'm wonder what a surfer think about it. You can pump these board but is another kind move you have use alot more your hips and it pretty physical to keep momentum.

Good review. I have the Pescadito and I like it but also have very little control when I’m on it. It’s fun, but I feel like it’s super clunky and hard to pump. Gives me a good workout and looks cool, but that’s about it.

why clunky ? since I started with HST trucks I got use to how it carves I am probable lost when it comes to pumping

@@Fatelvis2 I guess because it’s just so heavy to begin with. I’m 5’0 and 100 lbs. I can barely hold my board and when I’m on it, I find that I don’t have any real control unless I really exert myself. My legs always end up feeling like jelly. Actually, all of me ends up feeling like jelly.

@@tidepodmusical4173 understandable I am 5'6 160+ part of the reason I got it is because I found myself steering with my feet on my smaller board (same trucks) when you take surf lessons sometimes they start you off with a REALLY big board so I wanted something I had to muscle

It looks like due to the rotation of the back truck, you can't exactly wiggle pump these boards, and would only be able to surf pump. This would require you to rely more on your body positioning for leaning rail to rail and the rotation of shoulders to pump. For a SUP setup, this is probably better since there's more stability without the possibility to wiggle. I think what can be done is to replace the back truck with a regular one, and the Hamboard will be transformed into a a regular surfskate.

I would be interested to know how a surfskate truck like the one from Curfboard behaves at the front and a Hamboard truck with 20° or even 0° at the back. I have a Hamboard and have tested this variation and it was actually possible to push it. Unfortunately I only have the 40° trucks. But I think with the smaller angle it would be even easier to push and allow a really small turning radius. This could perhaps combine the advantages of both systems.

Steve, do you think changing the trucks over to say CX for example would work on the Pescadito? Could you foresee any issues?

I think it would be really hard to ride because the deck is so wide. You'd also have to drill new holes.

Hello, I have done exactly that! I added a CX trucks to my Pescadito and I didn't have to drill new holes. I kept the bamboo spacers. I just added a longer bolt. just make sure that they are tight. Mine has been good for over a year. The board rios!! Because the board is so wide you get extra torque. I also use Plow Kings Hawgs. The board goes over everything and is super smooth. Bro, i have to strongly disagree. The Hamboard is very pumpable with the right technique. Sorry to say, but if you can’t pump this, you are doing it wrong. For me it even feels more like real Surf movement.

I see you bought the new La Jolla deck, is it good for cruising long distances? It has a pretty long 21 wheelbase so i was thinking about buying it for that reason

Steve with all the carver surfskates you have which one is your favorite one? What can you say about the carver black tip?

I would say I have a few favorites for different applications. Top two Carvers for me are Proteus and Black Tip. The Black Tip is special. Great concave and foot placement, feels fantastic.

Why does that make it fair for Hamboards that I have to modify their product? That doesn't make any sense to me. It still wouldn't work because the truck has lean but no sway. And you'd have to drill new holes in the deck to do it.

It's clear this guy doesn't know how to surf. If he did, he would love Hamboards. Hamboards are the only true surfskate. Those others are nothing like surfing. When you surf you have to shift your weight to your back foot to carve with the fins. Hamboards is the only brand that lets you carve with the rear truck like you are surfing. Pump them like a surfboard, and you can move.

You're the only surfer I've ever heard say this. In fact, I've had many surfers try my Hamboards and they all say they feel nothing like surfing. I'll let you surfers debate it because I don't care, haha. All I know is that I don't like Hamboards at all.

I've used the carveboards (the original USA one with a 42" deck) with spring trucks, and 8" tyres. I used it on gentle hills, down roads with wide driveways. The hamboards use the same principle trucks (although I haven't ridden one), and pumping isn't really that practical unless you are already going downhill. The carverboard I have is a 30" deck model with the C7 trucks, and pumps like crazy, very well engineered, and like a surfboard, where the fins anchor the rear of the board, and the front is free, the stiffer rear truck and pivoting front truck of the carver surfskate drives you forward. The Hamboard longboards look awesome for practising longboard footwork...

The main thing I like about Hamboards is the superlong in the inventory which sadly exceeds my budget. I'm lucky at least to have a 46 inch longboard besides my surfskate the Maui & Sons (cheapest I found) which is plastic I put on a 32" regular wood board ...at least that too

@@socalautisticman1975 for an honest-to-goodness longboard surfskate anyway, you'd be better off for purchasing the deck separate, separate components and use a waterborne surfskate conversion kit.

@@socalautisticman1975 Koastal and Kahuna Creations both have decks over 5'6" long, and Deviate and South Bay board company both have outstanding longboard completes available, perfect for waterborne.
