Those pool noodles cut in half (i.e. length ways, so they open up) to protect the rails (even tail & nose) are good. They’re also cheap & light.

yep. but it also depends on board bag size. this board bag will only fit 2 boards If I have noodle rail covers on them. I'd rather take 3 boards and go cardboard, than take only 2 boards. a bigger width board bag would help

Pipe lagging on the rails. Foam camping mattress or yoga mat for the bottom. Wetsuit and board sock on top. Minimal amount best. Keeping it light gives the baggage handler less momentum to destroy it.

What continues to amaze me is why some of the manufacturers can't/won't make a travel bag/case with more protection so that we don't have to do all these hacks to protect boards.

Greg Ensey, have you considered Curve Surf’s Overstayer Muli 1-3 Coffin Travel bag? Light, padded, wraps up like a burrito and has some rave reviews from surfers.

The issues with making all the bells and whistles you are asking for comes down to a few things. 1. Cost- adding pricy materials that most consumers dont want to tolerate. 2. Storage- the bulkier the bag, the harder it is to store the other 49 weeks it is not in use, or once you get to your destination. 3. Weight- I have found that the less i pad the boards, the safer they end up. Bigger they are, the harder they fall.

I use Pipe Insulation 6ft. fits the rail like magic and super protective padding,. (Great Vid BTW)

Hooded rash guards are awesome. Great sun protection without the sunscreen burning your eyes blind in the lineup.

i put my surfboard (if im taking just one) inside my daybag and then put it into the travel bag

Can you put fins in your carry on? They are really sharp and wonder what security would say My fins are custom from Greg Griffin and I would hate to lose the fins if the board bag went missing?

Pipe insulation foam works great on the rails ( and is cheap)

yep, always useful. this particular bag is pretty tight with 3 boards so If piping covers go on the rails I can't fit 3 boards in it.

yes, I've had and used a-frame's for years. they're on my instagram stories all the time when I travel. this board bag, 3 boards... it won't allow any type of rail saver, wether it's a frame or just plumber pipe foam
