One of the leading surgeons in our city was sensitive to all of the then-available surgical prep solutions. So, he scrubbed with Ivory soap. Infection Control very carefully studied him, his skin and patients. As you probably suspect, he actually had a lower infection rate than others.

ALL SURGEONS WEAR GLOVES so the sterileness of the hands is only an issues if there is a tear in the glove or when the ungloved hand is involved, e.g. putting on the gloves.

mechanic here. we do the same thing, only it's at the end of the day with heavy duty pumice soap (and several other times throughout the day. it really is like being a doctor. only on cars.).

@@cameronthomas7748 I know, they contain micro pumice particles as the abrasive. Unfortunately I have sensitive skin. So I use nitrile gloves all the time now!. Good to know it's working fine for you :)

Hey man I cannot say how much this has helped my ocd I used to wash for 45 mins and now can wash in less than 15 and the more I get used to this the faster I’ll get all I did was buy some reusable nail picks and some hibiclens Chlorhexidine stuff and it’s been a life changer

Excellent video! Just one comment on the Avagard technique - I would suggest using a first pump of the solution to 'paint' both the forearms first, then a second to do the hands last. This prevents you from breaking the sterile field if your forearm sweeps go above the most proximal point of your first scrub of the day!

This is so interesting, I’m not planning on working in surgery but I do plan on studying midwifery. So far I’m taking an STNA course and i can finally realize how sterile the hand washing Technique is for surgery compared to the usual “less than 20 second of friction” wash. I was unaware that you didn’t have to wash your hand again working between patients.

You're not supposed to use the brush portion anywhere besides your nails, as it causes micro-abrasions on your skin. Bad for you, and bad for patient. Use the sponge side for the rest of the job. Also, you forgot your web spaces, and you are supposed to scrub 2" above your elbows. In Europe, they are only using the nail pick, and the brush side to clean nails, then they discard the scrub brush all together. It's only a matter of time until we folllow suit.
