I think what he was trying to say was that if the bear is already chasing you, there is no point slowly backing away, as the video says since... well, its chasing you. Since you can't outrun the bear, Simon is essentially saying there might be a higher chance of surviving if u climb a tree because there is potentially a greater possibility for defence. Climbing a tree would most likely not work, but it does have slightly better odds than just running

The ice one wasn’t really described properly, you guys were right you’re meant to melt it but there would be bacteria in is, so you’re then meant to boil it and can either drink it hot or wait for it to cool down!

That's one of the reasons, consuming ice (natural ice, not water frozen in the fridge) means it's forming from the atmosphere, which is not that healthy, plus has tons of bacteria. Plus, like the video said "un-mineralized and low density", so basically on the long term you are not getting the necessary minerals that come with water, plus low density you are just getting less water then needed because you quench your thirst with less volume of water. It's like eating snow or drinking salt water from the ocean. It's all water but not exactly the water the body needs.

@@Micha-ng7yp Boiling the water, what was once ice, is not meant to add minerals, but to kill germs and any living bacteria in the unfiltered water. The minerals in the liquid pockets of ice remain as Ice expands, and just redissolves into the water when melted. Not all Microorganisms will die in Ice, in fact, some can survive for ages. The same goes for Tap Water in many parts of the world. There are localities where dtinking Tap Water is Very Safe, and there are others where you need to boil it. Luckily in their case in London, their tap water is fine.

I don't really have an answer for, but I personally don't bother to eat that since the aromas of the plastic bag, and the freezer in which the Ice is Stored for Sale persists, giving the ice a bad taste. Bad aroma in your Freezer will do that too. Ice you -melt- *freeze* by yourself with your clean water source is always the best way to go Edit: not melt

The ice thing seems to me like people may eat less food because it tricks the body into thinking it's full. Regardless, the body understands past a certain point that it's not getting the required nutrients and urges you to eat food so I don't see this being an issue. The mineral content thing is potentially harmful but you can easily get the minerals from foods. There is also a thermal regulation issue where the body uses more energy to bring the ice up to temperature than it's worth but that's only if you're not being active enough to heat your body. If you're moving around a lot and heating your body up eating ice can actually do you good because it reduces sweat, and sweating can make you colder. This topic amongst others in the video has some validation but seems to be overstated to an extent to make it seem worse than it actually in. Of course there are case scenarios where these things may happen but a lot of the time in a survival situation the benefits outweigh the risks of bad things happening. For example: peeing on a jellyfish sting may even be a placebo to make the pain reduced, and if that is the case it's probably worth it because realistically nothing bad is ever going to happen.

Some of these parts are also misleading. Black bears can climb up trees while grizzlies and brown bears can't. You can drink snake venom and be fine as long as you don't have things like stomach ulcers so taking it in to your mouth and spitting it out is even safer as long as you don't have any cuts to your mouth or mouth ulcers.

I'm pretty sure the ice thing is because normal water has a lot of minerals in it that your body uses, but ice is just solid H20 and is lacking the same amounts of minerals. Ergo, if you only eat ice, drink melted ice, there is a chance that you will be come some form of mineral deficient.

10:45 Ice is pure water that has been frozen. Potable or drinkable water that we all drink everyday has minerals that our body needs in order for the balance inside cells not to mess up basically. If you drink pure water (Just H20), the concentration of minerals in that water causes your cells to absorb too much water in a hypotonic exchange (If i remember correctly from GCSE). This is also true for the north and South Pole and is one of the less talked about effects of climate change: when they melt, they put fresh water into the ocean at the poles, which in turn (idk how tbh) changes where the Gulf Stream goes, pushing it further south. This means the UK is actually one of the few places on Earth where when the average temperature of the planet increases, our average temperature decreases, as we will then have similar temperatures with countries like Canada (We are about level with them if you look at a map)
