I really like how, in the UK, it comes with those tyres which are great tyres; they aren't standard elsewhere.

They used to call this kind of bike an ATB [All terrain]. 2.4" is ok for long distance, summer & mid-season but for shorter rides, winter mud, rocky roads, or just comfort, consider 2.6 or 2.8. This bike will do 2.6 with fenders and 2.8 without [according to surly] - but you might need a 35mm set of rims to get the best out of the tyres. I have a Marin version of this which came out in 2016 & has now been discontinued - other bikes like this are the Bombtrack Beyond+, the Giant fathom 27.5, Surly Ogre. Spa cycles and Thorn are worth a look too. If you are new to adventure touring I'd start with the Bridge club and if it goes well - upgrade the rims to 35mm with hope hubs etc rubberwise I find Maxxis rekons the best blend of grip and speed but they are not cheap.

Are the spokes supposed to rub together and make a totally unacceptable squeaky noise? My rims are very true, but the spokes contact.

Just two cents from a home mechanic/occasional wheelbuilder: Spokes are supposed to touch (in most lacings), though I've never heard spokes squeak before. Can't say without seeing yours, but you could probably put some grease between the spokes or tie them together with some fishing line/twine to see if it helps with the noise. (People have been known to solder their spokes together but it makes the wheel much less repairable so I don't care for it.)

My spokes were "tinkling" recently. Turns out they had lost tension. Got them tightened up and it's gone. Btw black spokes might be more likely to cause trouble as the paint has more texture than raw metal. That's what my mechanic told me anyway.

I don't think those tyres can be run tubeless as it doesn't have the TCS marking.

So Surly still refuses to use full thru axle. They have this weird system on some bikes where one side was like thru axle and the other was just oldschool. Really weird looking and impractical to do something completely proprietary.

This is a bike shop presentaion video. They should do their research and find out beforehand if there are XS and XL frame sizes. Makes me wonder what else they don't know about the bike.
