Thank you for taking the time to make these fully detailed videos. And this is coming from an electrical engineer, so I truly do appreciate it. I now feel somewhat at ease knowing these are decent motors because I just picked one up, the SURPASS HOBBY Rocket V3 540 10.5T SPEC Motor. Hopefully the 120A sensored ESC made by Hobbywing will work well with the motor.

Nice breakdown. If the screws are not magnetic then they're probably stainless steel. Cheaper and weaker than 12.9 grade bolts, but perfectly adequate.

Nick, great review. How does this motor compare to the V4. Is it worth spending the extra to get the V4?

Hi there, I have a question that I would like to ask you. I am not a motor expert nor are any of my friends so I was hoping you could help me out. Anyways, the question I have for you is can brushless motors die/wear out, and how? Does the rotor lose it's magnetism? Do the coils somehow gain resistance? Do bearings lose their smoothness in a way that bearing oil can't help? I am very curious because I have a brushless motor that runs much hotter than it used to 5 years ago.
@nickadams54116 жыл бұрын
Hi Brushless motors that are used within normal conditions will not wear out, except for: Over heating will cause the parts to degrade. The rotor is susceptible to heat, which causes it to lose magnetism . The hotter it gets, the more likely it will lose some strength. This will depend on the manufacturing quality, and some can become very weak . This results in the motor running hotter than when new. In your case, I suspect this is what has happened. Other failures, such as coils burning out , are due to misuse. Bearings can wear out, with dust and water damage. Solder joints can melted with too high current. The sensor board can be damaged by a stone or something rubbing on it, but it will not wear out. Also, I have seen the magnetic rotor come loose on the shaft, causing it to slip during acceleration, which feels like a slipping clutch when driving the car. Generally, if the motor is kept below high temperatures, it will not lose any noticeable performance.

Nick Adams Thanks a lot for the information! I have a motor that I suspect has a rotor that over many years has lost it's magnetism 😁

Hi Nick I have a question about a older motor. The ares pro comp. 17.5 stock spec. I did some testing on my motor analyzer #1 test kv2063 rpm 17540 8.5v 1.0A @50° timing sensor wire not seated #2 kv2737 rpm 28939 8.5v 1.1A @51°timing sensor board timing 53 52 51. I understand why the amps are so low
@nickadams54114 жыл бұрын
Hi X Man. I can only assume the rotor magnet strength is very weak. Even so the amp reading appears too low.
@ericwilson87894 жыл бұрын
@@nickadams5411 the motor still has the clicking feel of the magnet but I guess they can still be weak thank you for your help.

Hi Nick. Was looking for some info this motor I've ordered the 21.5t to go with a hobbywing xr10 justock esc. I'm installing into a rock crawler. Should i be adjusting the timing on the motor the esc timing cannot be adjusted and no turbo. Bit of a newbie so hope I'm not asking a daft question! Cheers
@nickadams54114 жыл бұрын
Hi Darren. Rock Crawling does not need a high rev motor. Good torque and suitable gearing for a slow speed control. Therefore the motor will not need extra advanced timing on the endbell. Either leave it as it comes, or reduce it to about 10 on the scale, if it is too fast. Crawl on. Nick

would the 17.5 turn be faster then a trinity zombie 4850kv when both are on 2s? or is the zombie a much better motor?
@nickadams54116 жыл бұрын
Hi Poker 4 The Trinity 4850kv is a larger motor and will be much faster than any 17.5T motor, when in a heavy vehicle.

What timing do you recommend on that Surpass V3?
@nickadams54115 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan Blinky racing 17.5T and 13.5T. Set endbell about 50 degrees. If you use ESC Boost then turn down to 40 degree, or even 30 degree for a lot of boost. The gearing will have to be adjusted in each case. Race on. Nick

@@nickadams5411 Fantastic thats a great help Nick! I have been running mine around 40 so happy to run hear I should run it a little higher. Also sorting my MMPR which apparently should be around 65 on a small track - class is LMP 13.5 blinky. Should be getting the most out this motor by then
@nickadams54115 жыл бұрын
@@DanOsborne Hi. Always check the temperature of the motor after a run. It should not be too hot to touch. No more than in the 70's deg C.

This are the good motorr??did you recommend for drift??
@nickadams54113 жыл бұрын
Hi. Drift motors need to be geared for medium speed and smooth power. There are new versions of these motors. I suggest you set the advance timing low for drift, say 20degree, to get a wider power band.

Hi Nick! Is it possible to use motor analyzer onto soldered motor to esc?
@nickadams54116 жыл бұрын
Hi Piotr Yes. You can test the timing, with the motor in the car. Connect the three leads and the sensor cable. Turn off the ESC switch. (It wll still work with ESC switched on). To test the KV. Move or remove pinion from motor. Connect 3 leads and sensor cable to motor. Turn off ESC. Test for KV
@MrKhargulec6 жыл бұрын
Thx for quick answer! So basically with unplugged battery from esc and removed pinion from motor its safe to use analyzer?
