I’ve just had the same thing happen to me! I bought a phrag hybrid of kovachii x ( Eumelia Arias) a couple of years ago. I think it originated from Ecuagenera. It’s grown quickly and just put up a 2 foot high spike. I’ll post it on the phragmipedium alliance Facebook page in a couple of days. The flower is just opening now and it’s clearly a true kovachii. Love your plant. It looks very happy. Not a spot on the leaves. We have similar growing conditions. I grow indoors in the Uk in a relatively mild climate with few extremes. I grow mine slightly cooler than you. Nights are around 15 degrees and days up to 18. The plant sits in a west facing window and they’re potted in rockwool minicubes and fed with MSU.
@HerebutNot4 жыл бұрын
David Harrap - ah, that’s really cool. I’ll hop over to the Phrag alliance group and check it out. I gotta say, I’d probably be a bit crushed in your case-I really want to see what back crossings of kovachii look like! I have made one with my kovachii on to Sam Crothers (fischeri x kovachii)-but the seed pod is still developing. Tnx for sharing your care/conditions.

My coworker, before she moved to another state, gave me my first Phragmipedium which she bought on impulse when she went to a botanical conservatory. To my shock she had it in a pot with no drainage hole and in half potting soil and its original sphagnum wrap. It survived but didn't thrive. She gave it to me because it was losing its leaves. It is now in a Repotme bark mix for Phrags. I hope it will be okay.
@HerebutNot4 жыл бұрын
Rinsuki - phrags will bounce back when they’re happy. If you work on irrigating the potting mix every week (run about a full pot of water through it) and keep it in moderate light (east window) but with mild temps, it’ll grow great for you. Nice gift though-what type of Phrag is it?

Ah, an interesting point you make about water in the crown that has fertilizer in it. I have noticed that plants that get plain water in the crown don't get crown rot but if I spill water with feed in the crown, invariably they get crown rot. I hadn't thought about the salts being left behind damaging tissue as a possible reason. 🤔 Merry Christmas. Happy New Year.
@HerebutNot5 жыл бұрын
Yeah! And with phals I’ve never had crown rot, but...it would make sense that those salts can cause abrasions and become entry points for fungus and what not. It’s also possible that because I use tap water w/ chlorine my issues w/ pathogenic fungus/bacteria are less b/c the leaves get blasted with chlorine 🤷🏼♂️ will be interesting to see if adjusting this for your plants results in any changes Merry Christmas & happy new year Michael!

Gorgeous bloom! Very informative video! How much citric acid do you add to your tap water to acidify the water?
@HerebutNot5 жыл бұрын
MaryG Orchids - I adjust to lower the pH to 5.8. 2 waterings are 5.8. Followed by two waterings at 7.9 (unadjusted tap water). I can’t give you an amount for the citric acid because I add 1 tablespoon to a liter of water and then use a couple capfuls of that to adjust each jug of fertilizer water. I hope that makes sense

Saludos desde Moyobamba, el lugar en Perú de donde fue robada esta bella orquídea
@HerebutNot2 жыл бұрын
en realidad esto fue comprado de una empresa en ecuador llamada Ecuagenera. crían y venden orquídeas, y trabajan para conservar y sostener estas especies que están amenazadas por la pérdida de hábitat para las tierras de cultivo y la deforestación.

how much citric acid to add to the tap water?
@HerebutNot3 жыл бұрын
Depends on your water - you need a pH tester, you can't erroneously add a specific amount of acid expecting it to go to the same pH. Example: my citric acid may be stronger than yours; my water may be more alkaline than yours; your water may be more pure than mine (meaning less acid is required to lower it more drastically). Even here in Calgary the tap water pH changes depending on the time of year and where in the city your water comes from.

"Discovered in 2001", more like: "An American guy first knew about it in 2001". Peruvians, Peruvian botanists and specially San Martin Region local knew about this plant for decades before its "discovery"
@HerebutNot4 жыл бұрын
Yup, I'm aware of the history. The reality is with botanical classification, the first to register is first to name. History aside, what I care about is sharing good and helpful information about how to grow the plant effectively and raise them from seed-so that it can at least be grown well in captivity, exist in people's collections, and shared to others from captive seed-grown plants, rather than collected from the wild. It's time to get past the ego and focus on what matters-preservation of captive plants (growing plants effectively), propagation and ensuring wild populations are protected.
