In the late 70s, I worked in a CoOp creamery in the middle of Wales. We made butter, cream, evaporated milk, powdered milk and rice pudding. We made rice pudding to about 6 or 7 different recipes for different retailers. The higher quality puddings with the premium label, such as Ambrosia, had more rice and less sugar. The lower quality had more sugar than rice. All made in the same factory. The marketing would have you believe that these things are made by the retailers, but it's not the case. The main difference is price!
@stephenrandall35518 күн бұрын
I worked in a fruit and veg canning factory and we canned fruit and veg for a number of different retailers. If we ran out of peas for example for one retailer we would take the labels off another retailer and relabel the tins. My wife worked for a well known pie factory and they did the same with the pies.

Aldi is the best thing that has happened in British retailing in the last 50 years from the point of view of consumers. When they came to these shores British supermarkets had the highest mark up in the world. Aldi and Lidl have kept them honest.

I like mine straight out of the fridge, never mind spoiling it by heating it up. I was brought up on Ambrosia because I don't think anyone else made it. My mum did make her own and it always had the most marvellous skin on it. These day, I would go with the Aldi version. I used to sprinkle a little brown sugar on mine when I was a kid, but these days it a bit of jam.

My mam used to insist on heating it up - but refused to buy more than one tin - realising that it was not enough, she would then, in a bid to make it go further, go to the sink and then proceed to douse it in copious quantities of Northumbria’s finest council pop! She did the same thing with other tinned “milk pudding” products - sago, semolina, tapioca, macaroni (yes, you used to get sweet macaroni before macaroni cheese was a thing) - only bought one tin of the product in question and added water to it, as “It makes it go further!”. Did the same thing with spaghetti-type products, ravioli and even beans in tins - and don’t get me started on her tinned soup! I like those things cold as well - tin to bowl to mouth! Best with jam in - wonder what it would be like with Nutella?

When they first came to the UK it was literally pile it high and keep it cheap as that is what the German stores are like. Germans don’t care what it looks like but Brits do. A lot of people will not go into a shop they don’t like the look of. Retailers say we are the Italians of North Europe. Aldi have done a brilliant job of adapting to British tastes and that is why the stores are now a lot more attractive.

Clubcard prices are for those that don't mind giving Tesco all their info for them to use and sell on to third party's. I had a Clubcard for a few years but the only info they had that was me was the address everything else was fake. When I moved address I didn't bother with updating the card details and they probably send letters to the address I used to live at back in 2008/10.

Good review, rice pudding is the ultimate comfort food for me, if I ever compile a list of 'last meals', it would be in there somewhere. My mum used to do hers in a loaf tin in the oven and it spooned out very dry, almost like a cake, over which you poured milk and sprinkled sugar. The rice pudding in school was a different beast altogether, more like the tinned stuff, but lovely in its own way. It looks like there's very little compromise for the Aldi one here, for half the price.

Ambrosia do a Traditional Rice Pudding that has sultanas and nutmeg in it, that might be worth a try if you get a craving for it. I will say that the 9% rice is because it’s put into the tin raw, so it’s 9% of the volume of the can is uncooked rice that then cooks and swells through the retort process in the can and takes (if memory serves me correctly) around an hour and twenty minutes to come up to temperature, cook and cool down enough for the cans to be handled/labelled.
