GOOD JOB DOGS!!!!! 🙌🏼 This is a perfect display of their breed, instinct and intelligence. These dogs are powerful decision makers who take their job seriously and give their shepherd owners some much deserved piece of mind. Although these bikers were probably unaware of the circumstances, no one should EVER approach a flock of sheep or a goat herd in the hills or mountains; especially when you can clearly hear bells, there will almost always be a Livestock Guardian Dog nearby waiting to defend their flock. Bravo! 👏🏼
@303ks

You are mistaken. That is a public passway and these dogs are aggressive towards people who just want to mind their business and enjoy their day. I'm not blaming the dogs but I am blaming their owners for allowing them to attack without discretion. What if there where children taking the hike? I am sure the dogs can be trained not to attack humans and if not then they should never be allowed unsupervised in public. Period

@ericalarsen9175
@ericalarsen9175 3 жыл бұрын
@@303ks Actually, it is you that is mistaken.... 🤷🏻‍♀️ It is quite common in sheep herding areas for herds to travel long distances through public lands, foothills, mountains and feilds annually. Some of these areas might have biking trails or walkways. During this time of the season, you’ll often see local news reporters announcing that sheep herding season has begun and give instructions on how to behave if they come into contact with a sheep herd and/or their LGD (Livestock Guardian Dog). Additionally, at the trailhead markers you’ll often see warning signs instructing outdoor enthusiasts that they may encounter sheep and their LGD and what to do if that happens. It is possible that these bikers did or didn’t head the warnings. In either case, the dogs behaved perfectly. It is VERY rare that a Great Pyrenees or Maremma LGD will ever physically engage a human. That person must pose a significant immediate threat to the safety of the sheep by charging or physically touching the livestock while ignoring the LGD’s warning barks. The LGD’s first and most effective defense is its bark and an intimidating stance. These dogs rarely physically engage a threat. Instead, they worked together as a team to ensure that the bikers kept their distance while placing themselves between the bikers (the potential threat) and their sheep. So long as people respect the LGD warning and walk away, everyone is safe. Children are typically especially safe. LGD’s have an impressive ability to make decisions independently and determine what is or isn’t a threat. This is what makes them steadfast and trust worthy to be left alone with the sheep for months each year, guiding them to their summer or winter pastures. What the bikers did wrong was stand their ground and attempt to advance. Sheep herding season is short and there are plenty of other trails. Let’s also remember that humans are the apex predator and it would be a disservice to the sheep, the LGD and their owner to dissuade an LGD from protecting their flock against humans. After all, humans have been known to steal, abuse and kill animals for sport. Many farmers have lost livestock to people who are careless or cruel. I have a Great Pyrenees who lives with my goat herd full-time and protects them against any potential threat; animal or human. I am always proud to see her protect her herd the way these dogs did. What you don’t see here is how incredibly sweet, soft and docile these dogs are with their owners and their children. These are some of the most intelligent, hard working and loyal dogs you’ll ever know. You might be fascinated to learn more! There are plenty of resources on KZbin. Happy learning!

@@ericalarsen9175 I am simply advocating for some responsibility and accountability from the part of the sheep herders. They are free to use the land as long as they don't put anyone else in danger. There are options for them that would allow them to protect their herd and at the same time the people that want to use the trail can do so without fearing an attack.
@ericalarsen9175
@ericalarsen9175 3 жыл бұрын
@@303ks The responsibility and accountability you’re suggesting is already clearly demonstrated by the quality of the dog and it’s training as evidenced by the clear display of warning without an attack. You may want to look at recorded videos of a dog attack to note the difference. The dogs here did not put the bikers lives in danger, that responsibility lies with the bikers. There is no way they didn’t see the sheep herd in advance. That should have been their first indication to turn around. What other forms of protection would you suggest to the farmer that would be more intuitive and effective than their well-trained LGD’s?

@dogtownlounge4245
@dogtownlounge4245 2 жыл бұрын
@@iwatchwithnoads7480 The German Shepherd was selectively bred in WWII to be a prison guard. As you can imagine, there were few that survived that war outside of those military lines, but were carefully saved and the breed was brought back, with some blood added in from particular compatible breeds, and then returned to use as a herder. Their style of herding was not like border collies; they tended the flock by circling around it, like a living fence. They were used to keep a flock on a particular grazing space without wandering. That's what I mean by "that movement." Their popularity in the US has resulted in a lot of inbreeding and poor structure, as well as the loss of their use to do actual herding. With generations of dogs not used with livestock, that herding trait has diminished. It's rare, but you can find them in some places. The severely sloping rear end that has become the "standard" renders them incapable of the flowing, movement they used to have. There's a lot of hip dysplasia now, and just a general lack of stability. I'm certain there are breeders working to improve those things and return to that former style. The only ones I see anymore are several types kept as pets, or the types used for law enforcement, like scent work or as police dogs. Just in case it wasn't clear: the dogs in the video are from the group called "Livestock Guardian Dogs" whose purpose is to protect livestock. This is an entirely different set of skills from all of the dog breeds used for herding, and they're at opposite ends of the prey drive spectrum.

@@russellpearce3749 The dogs are not attacking. They are definitely threatening but not attacking. Do you think honestly think this is an attack? You’re talking a big game about killing the dogs. That isn’t how these situations work. Are you going to tell the rancher or authorities you killed a dog for barking at you? Good luck with that. You’re also assuming this is a public trail. Do you know that for certain? What if the cyclist is trespassing. Would you still kill an “attacking” dog on its own private property?

@@sdrfz You apparently need better training on how to move through rural farming areas. Rule number one that anyone who has ever lived in a farming area invariably knows: never try to ride a bike or drive a car through a flock of sheep or a herd of cows crossing a road or trail, whether there are livestock guardian dogs present or not. Your irresponsible behaviour is threatening the animals’ - and your own - safety. The responsible course of action would be to back away and choose another route, or to back away and have a lunch and wait for the animals to pass a responsible distance away before attempting to move through the terrain. The animals have right of passage first. Respecting their safety ensures your own.

These dogs are doing exactly what they have been bred to do for thousands of years. Notice how they don't attack the man on the bike, they just bark at him. They're not attack dogs, they're guardians. They're smart enough to tell the difference between a real threat, like a wolf, and a guy on a bike. Their barking may seem aggressive, but all they're really saying is "go away" and that is their job. Last point: Note how one dog stays with the perceived threat (the bike guy) while the other runs back to stay with the herd of sheep. Great Pyrenees are awesome at guarding livestock.
