Watch as our livestock guardians help to keep a problem bear off our farm and also contain a snake. There is no direct bear footage, only evidence that he was here. But I do have snake footage. Our 7 guardians are Akbash with Great Pyrenees mixed in. Hope you enjoy! Please subscribe if you like our channel. It's free and easy to do.

Bear!? Yikes... Your dogs are gorgeous and amazing. I freaked out one morning when one of my senior guardian dogs didn't show up for breakfast. I frantically ran around the property and then to the back pasture where I saw him standing between the alpaca girls and an angry coyote who got his leg caught in the fence. I was so proud of our sweet dog. I had to run back to the house to get my boys and everyone followed except the coyote who was stuck. Whew... we usually have at least 2 working dogs but we were in transition as our dogs were all older. We've been adopting them from rescues and finding a good fit takes a little bit more time. We've been so blessed with such amazing guardian dogs and they are worth their weight in gold and then some. And like you, ours is family and we love on them a ton. There's a very good reason that it is so rare- look up littermate syndrome, its a horrible thing that many siblings kept with other siblings experience. It often makes for miserable lives for the pups involved and awful behaviors, theres very few people who have the ability to combat this and keep the pups separate enough so they dont experience that
@BigHornMountainAlpacas

I will have to disagree with you Vic Toria, and I'm educated on what some people call littermate syndrome. Many, many keep families and litters with no issues. Also, if what you are saying is rare, almost the whole sled dog industry wouldn't exist. My two before this pack, where Great Pyrenees littermates (they also were part of this pack for 2 years), They were sisters who worked, played, slept and ate together into teenage years which is when they passed. It is not rare to have a bonded family pack of dogs who get along. It is not rare to have siblings get along. That is my opinion, so I decided instead of delete this comment, I would write back. But I don't want this to turn into a debate. Thank you.

maybe one day could you share a tip or two on how to "train" pyrs or do working dogs train each other or both? Could you share even one tip on what is most important humans help dogs understand that they need to do or not do and how to show them that? For instance licking ok, biting not ok. I got tackled by a pyr today and though it was the single most wonderful moment of my entire day I am supposed to be helping them learn to behave so that they can be adopted into family homes. How should I respond when 1 yr old pyr keeps mouthing my forearm and hand . I tried to calm, disengage and not reward with pets until he stopped but at some point this dog learned to mouth people...he is a rescue dog they follow your lead and listen to your cues so well

Hello. I believe these dogs are such independent thinkers who just know how to do their job so we need to just support them in that. I use a lot of positive praise and just tell them what a great job they are doing. Lots of love, group play, and just letting them be who they are. It's nothing I could train them to do. And for me, I'm fine with my dogs mouthing me. They know to never bite down. I have a few that love to take my hand and it's an affectionate and playful thing, nothing that bothers me or nothing I'd want to stop. It's just how they communicate.

I have one Pyrenees and I breed Great Pyredanes, the Dane originally being a Boar hunter, later an estate guardian, so the mix is amazing. Akbash are fantastic! I would have went that way if I'd had the breeding stock, but I am happy with the Great Pyredanes. The hybridization gives them much better health and lifespan than either breed on it's own, you have the size and intelligence, fantastic with kids, even better if possible with animals of all types and sizes, tend to roam less, don't bark incessantly at leaves, and like the Pyr, a coyote stands no chance against a Pyredane pack. I love my LGDs!

This makes me SO happy to see. :-) ...Here in Norway around 2 million sheep are release out in the wilderness to run free each year. Without any supervision or protection throughout the whole summer. Unfortunately the grazing period here is associated with suffering and poor welfare for many of the animals. And many will never return home. Of course there are many reasons for this. Some may break a leg and will eventually die of starvation. Naturally, another reason is attack from predators. A large majority of the politicians doesn´t prioritize protecting our predators. Our ENDANGERED predators. Quite the opposite actually. They share the same TERRIBLE attitude as many farmers have: "We don´t need wolf, lynx, wolverine and bear in the Norwegian wilderness." "So we´ll just remove them, because it´s not in our favor." They act like we have some kind of first priority to this wilderness. To this world! So instead of giving farmers economal support, and demand that they start herding their sheep, they do what they can do eradicate and expel the predators. Simply because it´s impractical for business. All this despite that most Norwegians wants to keep wolf and other predators in the Norwegian wilderness. Norway definitely has a lot to learn from other countries.

I had no idea that a bear would be a denied attacker ..... I know the PYRENEES big males will kill wolves with some efficiency .... a coyote / coyotes are just using energy they will find lethal to their existence. Love My Pyr ... she is a phenomenal creature.

These dogs are awesome to have around! And we don't live on a farm, but I know I can count on protection,as well as trusting him, as guardian dogs have above avg intelligence, imho.. Tacoma is who I had first (full Akbashf from working parents) and then when I saw David available as a pup (half Akbash and half Great Pyrnees) from working parents it seemed like a perfect fit. I had already raised full great pyrs and had them from pups to teenagers so I was familiar with both breeds. Then David was so spectacular that I let them have 1 litter and I kept all the pups.

Beautiful Pyrenees to be sure. My girl is a rescue. 2 failed placements due to ignorance and hubris. I was familiar with the breed. She lives in an urban area with a decent yard and lots of walking. Several neighbors and their animals are in the “flock.” I hope to have acreage and more Pyrenees one day.

Two things here, 1: Carry antivenom for all snakes they might encounter. 2: Have gun capable of taking down a bear for your safety as well as the dogs, and the livestock. As far as I know bears are not on the endangered list and as much as I would not want to kill a bear your neighbors might be appreciative if you did. BTW once a bear knows he can take livestock it will return again and again and your neighbors hopefully realize that and have taken precautionary measures since l losing an animal. Cheers
@BigHornMountainAlpacas
@BigHornMountainAlpacas 3 жыл бұрын
Our vet is 8 miles away and has always been available so for me to buy the very expensive antivenom each year wouldn't make as much sense than to pay if we need it from her. Thankfully, 20 plus years living here and no one has been bit by a rattlesnake. We have had one, once but I was able to take care of it. For the bears, the 7 guardians keeping them away would be more effective than me, using my gun. I like that we can live with the wildlife without having to kill. The livestock guardians make that possible.

Do you guys have a problems with wolves in your area as well as bears and mountain lions? I have heard that spiked collars are a good thing for guardian dogs to have if they deal with wolves.
@BigHornMountainAlpacas
@BigHornMountainAlpacas 2 жыл бұрын
We do have wolves but my guardians play and a spiked collar would decrease their quality of life greatly. A jaw could get caught on another's collar but most likely they would not rough house and play as much. I have 7 and the threat is not so much that 7 would need to wear spiked collars their whole lives.

Thank you. They are a full family pack, so I think even as the 5 were a year old they were protecting right alongside their parents. Hi. The livestock guardian breeds really just know what to do when the right environment is facilitated. They need fencing to keep them safe and also introductions to the animals that they will be guarding. It in their breeding to know what to do. I recently made a video called "Introducing New Animals To The Guardians And How The Bond." Once they bond to the animals it's very easy.
