Honestly surprised it even runs, with that mileage and owner. Reminds me of my brother and his previous car, he used to ignore every single issue in it unless it made the car non-drivable. His timing belt snapping, as he was pulling out to go and get a new timing belt installed, was hilarious.

The body may be virus weakened, but the important part to Ray's humorous observations is intact. Even though at first appears to be a rolling oil change, the vehicle; despite the neglect and cosmetic deterioration; appears to be economically repairable. With this many issues to address, would make interesting content. Hit it with a pressure washer first.

I had a chevy that was about 14 years old me and my buddy worked on it. Everything worked but you would have to let the transmission warm up 10 minutes for the rubber seals to make the car move. We spent a few hours fixing all the holes on it but the garage mechanic wouldn't pass it I was pissed . This is nice you are fixing a clients car but a time comes when you cant use a magic wand to fix it for little or free.

I've had both the 6 cylinder version of this engine and more recently the 5 cylinder version in a 2006 XC70. Mine started leaking oil like the Exxon Valdez, I checked the PCV system and had pressure in it, a definite sign that it needed replacement. I did that, all seemed to be well until more oil leakage was apparent, so I did the cam seals. This dramatically worsened the situation. After a lot of thought, it became apparent what had happened. The exhaust VVT pulley had a ton of end play in it, and I had set the cam seal just a bit too deep. I ordered up a new one, put another new seal in carefully and put it all together, all was well after that. Unlike this beauty, mine had a very clean engine bay and was in very good repair. I hope you feel better soon!

Undertake an extensive reading program to educate yourself/ Read one books month for the next two years - then keep reading at least one book every two months. Reading 100 books in a lifetime is not difficult to achieve. Set an education budget - Or are you not worth that much ? Is your value less than the price of a few books ? Education is of Paramount importance. People will only notice and judge you on the errors that you make. #1 Pay attention to detail #2 Make sure you see exactly what it is you are looking at #3 The CORPORATE GOVERNMENT education system manufactures ignorance and produces ZOMBIES. - This is by design - this is to keep people in a dumbed down -and- in a child-like state -- Society makes it acceptable by the masses by calling it 'having fun' There is a marked difference between enjoyment of life and having 'fun' Why does the word FUNERAL begin with FUN ? If you end up doing the front main seal, also quote on pulling the oil pump and replacing the O ring around the pump circumference and the pump to block gasket behind the pump. They do leak as they age, they cost very little and it takes minutes extra when you are in there doing the work. Pulling the pump also makes replacing the seal much easier.

Oil leak? No, PCV system failure pushing oil out of the cam seals. Replace the PCV system (not hard, but it is under the intake manifold) and the leaks will likely stop. It's also going to have worn out lower ball joints. A small amount of maintenance could make this wreckage into a nice little car.

Make a list of them and include words from other languages. That is your homework project. You will learn a lot from it and how languages work - and how words are shared among various languages. Think of a word that you may use instead of the word > Nice < - without using the word > Good < Andrei ne durey . . .

hey ray those looked like oil cooler lines that were on the backside there where the oil was spewing. the engine jumping back and forth probably cut one or rubbed a small hole in one and its ridding up the belt making it seem like a spew. just my 2 sense but it seemed to be coming from one of those pressure hoses giving it a spray and they were for sure pressed against that floppy motor.

If you ride a horse hard, and don't take care to walk them, groom them and let them cool down, they stand a good chance of getting sick, and dying. I have seen that same oil leak on several Volvo's. The crank will wear a groove where the seal rides. If that's the case with that one, you will have to install the new seal slightly out of the boar so the seal can ride on a good section of the crank. Otherwise find the correct size repair sleeve for the crank.

159,XXX miles and it's falling apart. One thing we've all noticed is premium lux cars fall apart just as soon, or sooner than standard lux cars.

Drive straight to the crusher, do not pass go, Ray. Whoever bought you this basket case had to be pulling your leg or filming an episode of “Candid Camera”. Just from looking at the car’s interior and general signs of mechanical neglect, I’d guess that the owner is female and the car is her daily driver. I would also guess that she doesn’t have the time or money to have it repaired.

I was waiting for that sunroof to quit, then poor Ray would have to take it out to fix it. I was surprised that it closed.

this was the last generation of really good build quality volvo's. this must be the most unloved s40 in the world. Or somebody trying a joke on you? the amount of deferred maintenance and repairs is rediculous.

I had an '01 V70, one owner, about 146k miles when I got it, miles of repair records, was good for about a year and then everything started breaking gradually. Fix one thing, another breaks. This was many years ago as well, when it was about 13-14 years old. Didn't rattle or anything, but shit was definitely worn out despite being well taken care of.

My thought exactly. I’m pretty sure if they didn’t have the money to maintain the car they surely won’t have the ability to fix, all that is broken now.

Amazing how many things are broken, missing and malfunctioning. This car is a pile. The owner has neglected problem after problem till the list is overwhelming. This is perfect example of what happens when you don't take care of your stuff.

2000-07 Volvo interiors were beautiful, but not built to last. My 01 c70 coupe was just destroyed on the inside. My instrument cluster fell behind the dash. My window regulators busted. My leather was just peeling. Motor mounts were shot. Sunroof seal was crusty and flaking. The headliner was pinned and glued up. But I loved that car to bits

Classic older Volvo. Owned several. They will run forever with much nurturing and love by a home mechanic. Othewise Ray's bill would be a couple thousand.

Most of those issues are normal wear and tear items for a vehicle of that age. The tires are the bigest concern, along with the worn components or alignment that caused the tire wear. Then attack the other problems one at a time. It will be expensive, or it can be done cheaply by an average diy guy with some time on his hands.
