the book that surprised me was scythe by neal shusterman. going into it I loved the concept but I didn’t realize just how much lore and world building it was going to have in it. I could honestly talk about the book’s philosophy and morals for hours!

I finally read Tower of Dawn (which I'd been putting off all year because I wasn't the biggest Chaol fan), and it ended up becoming one of my favourite books of the series! I also read Transcription by Kate Atkinson and was surprised by how much I loved it! It's an adult novel set in WWII, which is not normally my scene, but it was so wonderfully written and clever and witty that I couldn't help but be enthralled by it!

Vicious by V.E. Schwab is one of my surprising reads of the year. I was afraid to venture out to the adult genre. But I pushed myself to take it one page at a time. After reading it, i wanted more! I fell in love with Schwab's writing and world building. wow!

My most surprising book of 2018 is They Both Die At The End. I thought it was more about the sad part of death, whereas this book was more about enjoying life to the fullest, and that really surprised me in such a positive way! I really, REALLY loved that one!

2 books that really surprised me this year were: Upside of Unrequited and Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe. I heard they were good but I had no idea that I was going to love them as much as I do now. Such great reads that took me out of my reading slump

Pachinko and City of Thieves both surprised me! City of Thieves by David Benioff was a book I picked up on a whim cuz the concept was interesting, but it was sooo good and had a great perspective on WWII that I've never seen before. And Pachinko I knew I would like, but I never thought it would read with as much suspense as it does.

The book that surprised me the most this year was Paris 1919: Six Months that Changed the World by Margaret Macmillan. I had to read it for a class and I’m not much of a non-fiction fan, so I was quite surprised at how interested I became in reading about the Paris Peace Conference after WWI.

The book that surprised me the most was Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda! I read the synopsis and I didn't think it would mesh with me at all. I even read the sample on Goodreads and I still didn't like it. I only read it because my friend wanted to watch the movie. Once I read it though, it became the most relatable book I've ever read and is now in my top 2 of books. I still can't believe I almost didn't read it! That book changed my life!

For contemporary, The Last Boy and Girl in the World was my surprising read. I kind of expected it as a cheesy teen love story, but it was an emotional read! It was very different from the stereotypical YA formula. Its the best YA contemporary I've read this year.

I was pleasantly surprised by To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. I don’t usually read contemporary fiction because it’s just not my favorite genre. After hearing so many great things about this series, I decided to finally pick it up. I was expecting a cute, enjoyable, light-hearted teen romance story. It was that and so much more. It was so character-driven and reflective (my favorite kind of book). I’ve never seen myself in a character as much as I did with Lara Jean. It ended up being a much more profound series than I expected, and inspired me to do a lot of self-reflecting. ❤️

Is it sad I’ve read none of those books on her list. 😂 Some of them I want to read now though. But Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier was a surprising read. I picked it up because it was a graphic novel and would be a nice palette cleanser/quick read in between books. I was kinda interested in it, but not too sure about the concept. But after reading it I was happy I did because it was a cute, quick read; just what I wanted.

A book that surprised me was The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman. A friend had recomended the series to me and she pitched it as regency shadowhunters 😂 and while thats true I found the series as a whole to be more mature. The protag was inteligent and witty. The romance was important to the plot. Which really surprised me as most romances are treated as subplots.

One book that really surprised me this year was ace of shade by Amanda foody. I had gotten daughter of the burning city (her debut novel) and went into it expecting to love it but it just didn’t click and I ended up dnfing it.
