Good info. Didn't even realize there was a 30 Mbs option in 4K. Recorded our first video using the A7IV the other day and it was great having a camera with no record limit as we went to around 40 minutes before stopping. Can't remember the last camera we had that didn't have a recording limit. We recorded in 4K 30p, no overheating and no warning icon came up either. Loving this camera!

Much appreciate your video. For my needs 4k 30MB looks good enough. 1080 looks very soft but on the other side, it might hide all the imperfections of my skin. Natural soft filter. I shall test it when I get my a7iv.

Excellent tests. I will definitely look into color grading the 10-bit 4K XAVC HS in 50mbs, and see if it affects my ability to color grade. I'm guessing there will be some difference with 4.2.0, but will it be noticeable? Thanks for these high level tests. Very useful.

Hey Mark, I have a question related to ZV E10. Currently, I'm owning ZV E10 + Samyang 12mm F2.0. Do you have any recommendation on which Polarized filter + Ring that I should get for my camera? I mainly shoot pics and videos outside in summer. I don't mind about the shutter speed(the 180 degree rule) so I just want to get everything inside my camera, like the beautiful sky. Thank you.

The reason why the 4K APS-C "looks bad" is that it's not down scaled because in APS-C mode the A7 IV and A7C II have 4096 horizontal pixels, which is 4K DCI, but the 1080p is not downscaled it's line skipped from the down sampled 4K. You don't want the down scaling if you are trying to get a soft image because it makes the image overly sharp. You want to record the APS-C mode with an Atomos Ninja V, Blackmagic Decklink Quad, or 4K60 Pro MK.2. Some have fasely claimed that the bigger pixels don't matter, but you can center crop the A6700 and the A7C II and the A7C II will have less noise and better color accuracy. Clearly the FX3 has better low light because of the larger pixels and the sensor must be larger than APS-C to get good noise performance.

Great video! I think my sweet spot would be 4K 50mbps 10bit 4:2:2. I guess it’s still better than the largest 8bit video from A7III for example? Did you notice much quality difference between this 10bit setting over 100mbps one? I guess 100mbps is more suited for people that do heavy color grading. Cheers.

For sure you can do pro work with it. The crop in 4k is only for slow motion shooting at 60fps. There is no crop shooting in 4k at standard frame rates of 24, 25, or 30fps. The 120fps 1080 looks great. Just add a bit of sharpening.

THE SAME!!!... as 4k XAVC HS 100MB 4:2:2 10 Bit... honestly I can't see any difference, but the amazing is that recording at 30MB on a 128GB SD Card I get 8 hours !! of storage vs 2:41 at 100MB..... I’m not sure why you’re having that issue as I don’t use premiere pro, but the solution is to use DaVinci resolve. it’s free and the best editor. I am switching to it myself.

when not zoomed in, it is hard to see the difference in detail between 4K and 1080 on my new M1 iMac. But zoomed in it is so obvious. So maybe not too much to worry about. the issue is that there are no 60fps in 4K on my Sonys. for handheld panning landscape shots slowing down more than 80% helps. Definitely, sharp 4K is useful for cropping or extra reach on a 1080 timeline. But if I watch videos and movies I can't hardly tell the difference between 1080 and 4K. Much less difference to my eyes than between 720 and 1080. 1080p can also be shot at 30 Mbit/sec Nice comparison,

NOT a dumb question, and I should have mentioned it, but no, the best quality is the 4K Full frame. It uses the full sensor down sampled from 7k. the APS-C seems almost identical. But the 4K Full Frame looks sharpest by a bit

yes, capturing at a higher frame rate will help with panning and movement. but the motion of people will look a little more like a “soap opera” at these higher frame rates

can’t be soulful unless there’s a little blood shot in there. Many computers these days can handle 4K easily. there’s always proxy files if it can’t. The Sony can actually give you a proxy file if you don’t want to do it yourself on the computer.

Hey Mark, thanks about it. What is more interesting to me in 1080 FF coverage vs. 1080 in Crop is DOF and Low light performance not only sharpness and image detail. Sure I can see cropped version more detailed, but I can also see less of a bokeh in the background and I guess it will be worse in low light. Can somebody verify my logic please :)

it's decent HD but im a little cheesed its not as good as a lot of other HD modes from 4K cameras. GH5 has crispier HD than this thing. I think they might be pixel binning the HD. if you check a7siii vs a7iv HD videos you really see it. everything ive shot with my a7iv has been the 4K h265. it's perfect.

Yes, the HD is less than ideal. I think if file size is an issue for people they’d be better off using the 50mbps with the 4K h.265 or eleven the 30. The APS-C HD is better than their full frame, but I will be staying away from it all.

The kit lens is a decent zoom if you buy it with the camera, but the lens I use is the Tamron 28-75. Great quality, light, affordable and a constant f2.8. geni.us/NVva0Kp I would suggest using S-Log3 with the LeemingLUT to get the best quality out of your A7iv. But if you do not want to colour grade in post, then I would choose Picture Profile Off, or PP11 (S-Cinetone).

This is a perfect video camera for crop mode. Down sampled 1080p and 60p 4K and little rolling shutter. If u got a ApS-c Sony camera already or upgrading from ApS-c this is a great choice. And it fixes all the issues the a6600 had and gives u even more. I know it’s 2x the price but worth it👍🏽

The A7Iv is best and shoot in 4k. You can choose the lower bit-rate as I showed in the video and you can export in 1080. But if you shoot on any of these cameras in 1080, the image will be soft.

1080p has way less rolling shutter and 1080p apsc mode has even less than full frame mode. So one reason might be if you shooting action fast moving subject. 1080p apsc is the way to go.

for heavy colour grading, the 10-bit will be your key to success. But of course, if you have more info, it’s better for colour grading (but a lot of people won’t ever need that minute detail)

you still get full 4K resolution. it used a smaller part of the sensor, but it’s still full resolution. Just like when it does 4k60. the footage will be remarkably sharp. Those Sigma lenses are a secret weapon for the Sony full frame cameras for video 👍

A7iv is an amazing camera. Even a7iii is awesome... Back in time, Some russian channels were using a7iii as tv camera. These days that cameras get my respect. Now zv-e10 is much more than my needs.

Any lens will work. The camera automatically goes into aps-c crop mode with any lens in 4k 60 fps. It will be full 4K resolution.

I believe what he was doing was comparing a zoomed in image in post to a zoomed in image in camera 1080 APS-C crop code with clear image zoom. The clear image zoom will be sharper in that case, but clear image zoom in 1080 APS-C mode is not sharper than non-zoomed APS-C mode in 1080

How about using sigma 18-50 apsc lens on A7IV as main lens as a traveling combo. Instead of getting kit lens

That’s tough - on full frame the sigma is equivalent to 27-75 f4.2. So a little better than the kit 28-70 3.5-5.6. Bit not a huge difference. and the kit lens is stabilized. I would instead save a little more money and do the Tamron 28-75 2.8

It’s surprising that 1080p in aps c mode is sharper than full frame, I thought full frame should have more pixels to oversample from hence better in quality?

They are just taking a cropped portion of the center for 1080, so in order to get a full sensor readout, they line skip the 1080. So the crop mode which is not line skipped would be sharper. The 4k is far shaper because it is 7k down sampled to 4k with no line skipping

I don’t see any wild stuff on any of my screens, but it was snowing. Make sure you’re watching in full resolution. - sometimes KZbin will show you stuff in lower quality

Why do they bother with the outdated low quality 1080 HD at all anymore? Seems like it's been around for a decade and rediculous to use VS 4K all the way - computer editing or not.

I never use it myself. But many people insist on it - even though, as I explained in the video, you can get a 4K file just as small 🤷‍♂️. But I don’t know everyone’s situation.

I wonder where you stand on the retro lens debate of things? not proper full-sized lenses but these Nameless 16mm, 25mm, 35mm are 1.4 -1.8 C-mount lens that is under 40$ and are supposed to be comparable to " big boy " lenses. because from the videos I find. no one really goes in-depth without making it easy to understand. there's so much obfuscation. and how do you feel about this running narrative of everyone heading towards mirrorless as the future standard for cameras? are DSLRs becoming...obsolete?

retro lenses can be great if you are looking for some character - but generally they are manual focus and have many imperfections. But there are a lot of photographers who get them for a “look” or they just like them. I do think the camera industry will be all mirrorless eventually, but it’s not like a dslr will stop working - you’ll still be able to use a good dslr in 10 years. I’m sure there are people who will never stop using them

Still no hope for slow motion FF 4K. Frustrating that Sony cropped - its just so useful to have a 40% push in wide.

it would be nice to have 4K 60 in full frame, but looking at my tests, I see why they would want to keep it to apsc mode. if the 60 full frame had been soft, people would noticed. but the 60 in apsc is as sharp as a tack

It will be the same sharpness coming out of the hdmi. It looks sharper in this video because he is comparing it to the a7iii which is less sharp. He he compared the 1080 in the A74 to the 4K in the a74 - you would see the difference. The 1080 is still useable in my opinion. Just add a little sharpening in post
