I'm still waiting for this '83 Rockpalast show to be offered on CD/LP/ DVD. It was magical, Cheap Trick at their musical best. A time when most of us real fans thought the band had disappeared, they were cookin' hardcore in Europe. Bring it back.
@Shikta-poobah672 жыл бұрын
Even during those dark years when they were turning out one crap album after another, CT remained a great live act… even with “boring” Jon Brant on bass. There’s an 18 year gap when they didn’t make a decent album between 1979 and 1997, but I saw them live many times in that period and they still kicked serious ass.

Yeah, the keys are way too hot in the mix. They should just be barely audible. During this period they took a regular keyboard player with them on tour. A guy called Magic Christian. He was a bit heavy handed, but I guess that's what they wanted at the time. The early 80's were the golden age of synth rock after all

Probably because it was a longer than usual set list. This was televised on German TV, and they were trying to pack as many songs as possible into their set. It stands to reason they'd speed the tempo up a bit. Either that, or Bun E stumbled on to some really pure cocaine that night.

Cheap Trick played at the halftime show for the AFL championship game, and from what I've read Bun wasn't there because he was ill - so his son filled in for him! That was a great show. They were obviously older than this and the did sound better, but the energy wasn't as high.

Yeah, Magic Christian was annoying imo. He never changed the tone away from that twinkly, high-pitched crap. That may have worked on a few songs from the "One on One" album, but here on Surrender and a few other songs it's just grating. I wasn't unhappy when he left Cheap Trick.

Absolutely correct opinion. They should have released this as a live album/video/DVD....! Thanks god we got in here on KZbin, uploaded by themselves. I recorded it on a HQ video recorder way back in 1994 when there was a re-run of the concert on German TV.

Colin Ashenhurst I personally love the Budokan version but for different reasons. I like the way the sound has been mixed in Budokan. I have quite a few live versions of this song downloaded lmao
@Brewzerr3 жыл бұрын
I don't know about that. This is definitely a great version. I love the faster tempo, but the keyboards are way to high in the mix here and Jon Brant is boring af. At least on Budokan it's Tom playing bass, plus it was a brand new song at the time (as Robin lets us know) and has that more spontaneous "new song vibe" to it. This version is more high energy, but the Budokan version swings better.

@677moonpie10 жыл бұрын
Cheap Trick is a good band and all but a five neck guitar is kinda stupid. It would damn near be impossible to play the fifth neck and the fourth neck would be a stretch. A three neck is what he needs at most. That thing is gotta be heavy as hell too.
