People should listen to ROADWORK by Edgar Winter and White Trash

yepir. I got to see Edgar Winter in '73 or '74 and Bad Company opened for them. When Edgar and the band took the stage he said, We have a Special guest tonight, and i thought it would be Johnny, but then Rick runs out on the Stage drops to his knees, slides about 20' and hops up and starts blasting. yeah, underrated isn't close...He played on Todd Rundgren's Sonething/Anything Double Album - A Classic, toured with Cindy Lauper in the 80'sand those are just 2 of his side gigs.

I feel the same way but then he does a solo like this and kind of throws it all away. He CAN do whatever he wants on guitar but it has to keep an attention span. I don't want to hear someone play scales. Especially not from someone that I know can give me the riffs. I want emotion and novelty. There are a ton of great guitarists that don't make much music I am interested in. He's an unfortunate example of this. I will say though that his good stuff puts him in the top tier of truly great rock guitarists. I am also just some schmuck and am in no way saying I am better (unless I don't have to prove it in which case I am easily the best there is)

Rick is on fire here, knocking it out of the park. Ringo got it right with the whole idea of the All Starr Band. Ringo doesn't need to prove anything to anybody; all he needs to do is call up some legendary rock and roll friends, hit the road, and play a bunch of songs that everyone knows and loves and can sing along to. I went to one of the shows, and it was great fun, with three generations of fans in the audience. Peace and love!

I saw the Edgar Winter group with Rick Derringer in 1974 in Las Vegas . It was the best concert I have ever been to in my life . And now I'm almost 67 years old . Edgar and Dan Hartman left the stage halfway through the concert and left Chuck Ruff and Rick on stage . With only drums and Rick's guitar 🎸 they played all the top songs off of the All American Boy album. It was unbelievable.

I remember meeting Rick back in NYC around 1985 at a guitar show and he wasn't in good shape. Also saw him play at a little bar in Greenwood Lake late 80's and there was no one there and he was uh under the weather I think. I thought and think he was an amazing guitarist who was on his way to checking out early and then somehow he pulled himself together, got sober, found God and here he is. Amazing person. Rick Derringer was also a very accomplished Session Guitarist and played with so many Musical Acts. In their prime in the 1970's -KISS brought in Rick, when Ace couldn't seem to play a solo they needed correctly. Maybe he was too wacked out on drugs or booze. So, after hours of Ace messing up - KISS brought Rick in, and he nailed the solo in one take. He was there less than 30 minutes.
@discernment89632 жыл бұрын
@@carljacobson7156 Ace may well have been whacked, but let's face it KISS instrumentally/musicianship wise, although probably THE most brilliantly promoted act of their era are a good bar band on the best day of their lives. Which the master promoter himself Gene Simmons would be the 1st to admit. Whereas Derringer and his former bandmates The Winter Bros are amongst the premier musicians of their era.

There were thousands of Derringer-wanna-be's out there; and, thank the Rock Gods for that. What other profession saw millions and millions of wide-eyed and hopeful young people looking for that hidden talent they all truly believed they had somewhere in their musical grey matter? No one rushed out the door to be a house painter or attorney. The 50's, 60's and 70's, saw a volcanic eruption of musical styles and burgeoning genres never before seen in world history. And we teens lapped it all up. The rock 'pyramid' was being built at light speed and the great talents were discovered. But, for every great band, 100,000 garage bands went the way side, as did mine. Nonetheless, those bands have, arguably, the greatest memories of all. At least they had a chance to try. And, that was half the fun. Bragging rights.

@@stevenvox6549 . . Yeah, Jerry La Croix was the principal lead singer, and Edgar took the lead vocal on some tracks. To tell the truth, I much preferred Jerry's more mature voice to Edgar's screechy vocals. I knew a guy back in the mid-1970s who seemed to pop up everywhere back in those days. He seemed to me to be totally committed to being in show biz, even if it killed him, LOL. He was the bass player in an Art-Rock band called Gentle Art and in that capacity I'd often see him when our band was paying support to his band. He got a bit of a break when he became the night time announcer on Brisbane's 4BK radio station, from 8:00pm to midnight, Monday through Thursday nights. His show was called "The Fat Music Show", in which he played album tracks from all branches of the Rock music family tree. For example, one night he played only music from Prog Rock masters, Yes. What a night that was for me, being a massive Yes fan! Wishbone Ash used to also get a run often. I had well over 300 albums, and fully half of them came from my hearing tracks from them played by Rick on his radio program. It was there that I first heard Tobacco Road, from the Roadworx album by Edgar Winter. You better believe I wasted no time at all heading for the import record store in the city to buy it! I'd been a fan of Johnny Winter since the late 60s, when I first heard Johnny Winter And . . Live, at high school. We were always doing things to raise money for worthy charities, including running a kind of high school lunchtime radio station in which we brought our LPs and 45s to school and played tracks from them by request, which cost 10c per play, proceeds going to the charity we supported. Every little bit helped, I suppose.

Indeed. Although I only saw RD a couple of times, I saw Travers a couple *dozen* times in various small venues around DC. Always a great show. Had to go to the Baltimore Civic Center to see Trower in his heyday though...way too big an act for small clubs in those days. And don't forget Rory Gallagher...he was always playing around here, and his shows would go 2 1/2 or 3 hours all the time.

Christopher Parkening ( the worlds greatest classical guitarist) is also a devoted Christian. I'm just a guy that spent many years in Catholic school but i respect both Parkening and Derringer because they could have gone down the road of materialism but they stuck with something much more profound.

Love you Rick and your music!!!! Been listening to you since the 60's, and with the Edgar Winter Band, too. Glad to see Edgar on stage, wish we could have brought back Johnny Winter. When I think of this song, I hear Johnny Winters vocals but know that Rick wrote this song. Rick is a guitar God for me and most guitar players, too. Now lets here some Free Ride.

OK, I'll chime in. I saw Rick Derringer in Tampa circa 1979. Roy Buchanan opened. Derringer blew the roof off. Both bands kicked ass. The Derringer Live album is unbelievable. He plays better live than in a studio. There's a hell of a lot of top rated guitarists that can't do that.
