Surrey schools pull To Kill a Mockingbird and other books from recommended reading curriculum

Four books are no longer recommended resources for teachers at the Surrey School District, including “To Kill a Mockingbird.” The decision was made after a review by a panel of teachers.

Clearly no one deciding to ban the book was qualified to teach it. The whole point of reading books like this - that are now deemed "problematic" by ignorant, illiterate bureaucrats - is to gain a deeper understanding of the past & of human nature, even if there are tropes and terminology we wouldn't use today.

Probably not, since there are no pornographic books of that nature in schools, though there are learning resources available for teaching and understanding gender equality and acceptance. Oh wait, those are the kind of books you lot deem 'inappropriate' because the cover subjects you don't like and want to see go away...well, they aren't going to do that, so get the stick out and just accept that these people exist, they're never going to stop existing, and the world at large is a lot more accepting of them. Grow up already...

@awgreatonenas Actually very large portions of the planet ARE NOT very accepting of LGBT people. Too bad all these 'activists' are too cowardly to go fight for their rights in THOSE countries. Any teacher who is so legalistic as to not understand the overall value of a literary classic, and doesn't see the irony of calling a profoundly anti-racism book racist, has lost their mind, and has no business teaching anyone. I don't recall any of the "issues" mentioned, but I do recall the impactful lessons relayed by a book I would never normally read as a modern teenager. What an asinine decision, by those with an agenda, only shooting themselves in the foot.

They're not banned. Removed from recommendation lists. They will still be in libraries and used for educational purposes. The books are also accessible online. And a myriad of other ways for those inclined to look. Quit automatically jumping to conclusions in the comments.
