Surron Ultra Bee - First Impressions

This is austin from Points Unknown and these are my first impressions of the sur ron Ultra Bee electric dirt bike.
I picked up my ultra bee new in october of 2023 after dreaming about a lightweight electric dirt bike for several years. Previously I made excuses to not go electric for various reasons, the weight, or the range, and certainly the cost. But when the Sur ron Ultra Bee made it to north american shores, I knew it was only a matter of time until one found its way into my garage. I shopped around a bit, looked at mail order and drop shipping direct from China, but in the end I found one at a good price at a local dealer - and so went with that.
Unlike the Surron lite bee or the Talaria Sting, which feel like motorized downhill mountain bikes, the Ultra Bee feels a lot more like a real dirt bike. But at only about 190 lbs, the ultra bee is not overwhelming either. While I was at the dealership picking up my Ultra Bee, I sat on the Storm Bee and on a just arrived Stark Varg - and while I am sure the performance of the Varg is vastly superior to the Ultra Bee - at 240 lbs for the varg and nearly 300 for the storm bee - these are big heavy bike. And I'll admit they felt a little unwieldy compared to the ultra bee.
Out on the trails the ultra bee does not disappoint. Its nimble. capable. and most importantly super fun. It may be the most fun I have ever had on two wheels. Something about the weight and stand over height make the Ultra Bee really approachable and forgiving. I feel like I am able to ride faster and more aggressively on it than my other larger bikes because it doesn't pull me around as much. I actually feel much more in control and also I am lot less worried about dropping it in a precarious position and being able to pick it back up.
my shakedown rides on moderately rocky and muddy pacific northwest trails proved that the Ultra Bee is plemty capable right out of the box.. The suspension felt supple enough to handle some moderately rocky single track and the stock tires provided decent enough traction - Yes, it would probably get better traction and handle better with a 19" rear and 21" front wheel - but it doesn't feel like that's an immediate must have (though, it is on my list).
Power wise I don't have a lot to compare it to. But it certainly is quick off the line. And has plenty of go to get up to 40 or 50 miles per hour in a few heart beats. In eco mode it is a little underwhelming, and I find myself keeping it in daily mode most often. Sport mode is quite aggressive - which might be awesome when there is better traction, but is not really very usable for me with the slick conditions I have ridden in so far.
Of course like most people my biggest concern when getting into an electric dirt bike was battery range. But even riding hilly single track I have yet get into a low battery pickle. My rides so far in the 20 to 30 mile range have always gotten me home with 20% or more battery left. The first couple times I kept a close eye on the battery meter, but now that I know it's got enough to get me all around my local trails I can relax and just let it rip. I've been very impressed with the range - for a local trail play machine it is absolutely perfect.
Overall I couldn't be happier with my purchase of my Surron Ultra Bee. It is extremely fun and easy to ride and I look forward to taking it on lots of adventures.
