I don't know what our Swedish neighbours (I'm a Dane myself) were thinking when they made this concoction. I mean I love herring. Pickled herring (red or white), smoked herring, fried herring in vinegar, charred herring (sorte sild), hell even herring in a curry sauce. But surströmming?!? I think I'd rather take a dive in a sewage plant. One of the guys on my Residence Hall has a can, and we basically all live in constant fear that today might be the day he opens it.
@davidjirvin54103 жыл бұрын
The best group so far I've seen watching all these videos you guys handle the bad fish much better than anybody else a round of applause
@kalle64510 жыл бұрын
If you can eat it like that you should try it the right way, sourcream, onion, and sliced boiled potatoes on hardbread with butter, and try to remove the skin and bones from the fish first and chop it in pieces. You might like it.
@pearlanders10 жыл бұрын
Please understand that all the films where people open a can and eat fish like dogs is completely wrong way to eat this delicacy. You should make a sandwich with potatoes, onions, a few small pieces of herring (because they are very strong flavor) and tomato slices, and if you want to balance the flavor a bit, you can also have the Keso or sour cream on the sandwich. The bread must be unleavened bread, often baked in a stone oven. Now, if you do this correctly, it is a fantastic dish and does not taste like it smells, and often those who once tried it do it several times again. If you get a chance, and find yourselves in Northern Sweden, try to be with a real sour herring party with people around you who can help you get it right ... :)

Well done! Considering how well you guys handled that, you might actually enjoy surströmming if you do it the right way! Wash it under water first, get some swedish tunnbröd, sour cream and spring onions. Mix it all together and it can actually be enjoyable. It is an acquired taste for most though.

Daaamn! the Aussies are more versatile and open-minded than many people in the world that had tried and failed to eat herring! This is gansta "shit" in Scandinavia :) just lite fermented whale in Iceland! We just have fermented herring old delicate food, just a food to separate men from the boys! It´s usually opened in underwater like in a bucket of water, to get rid of excess smell and gas! i personally ate it first time when i was 16 and liked it :) Just some people don´t have the stomach for it. I recommend to have a stiff vodka afterwards! And remember to give a kiss to the missus ;)

@MrBigden378 жыл бұрын
How Do Ya Like Me Now, Chucklehead? The term “Viking” isn’t particularly specific, so for the purposes of this post it will mean the people living in the resource constrained parts of the Viking cultural milieu, namely Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the islands of the North Atlantic, including the Faeroes, the Shetlands, the Orkneys, and Iceland. Indeed the Swedish were Vikings during the "Viking Age"..
@HowDyaYouLikeMeNow8 жыл бұрын
MrBigden37 LOL, as you wish. With all that knowledge, though, you couldn't have chosen a Swedish-specific group to attach surstromming to?

@HowDyaYouLikeMeNow8 жыл бұрын

@HowDyaYouLikeMeNow8 жыл бұрын
EvulMe Indeed, brother. You're entitled to your rotten fish. I'm not saying you can't have it, I'm just questioning the logic behind it.
@Rod_MolinaBachmann8 жыл бұрын
+How Do Ya Like Me Now, Chucklehead?; I think it is not rotten but fermented. Nowadays there isn't a survival need to have it that way either, but a centuries-old tradition. A lot of food in the world does not make sense to some but it does to others. It depends where you live and what you are used to.
