The word you were looking for is "safety pin". The convenience of that type of survival food is cost per calorie, in other words, its cheap and will sustain you in an emergency. Great video, I have ofter wondered what they packed in the pre-made emergency packs.

The UST survival food is actually really good and you can get it for about 5 $ . They only come in apple cinnamon but it's packed with a lot of calories so it makes it's worth.

In defence of the rations, you can buy them separately at Walmart for about $5.00 and I actually like them, they taste like Apple cinnamon, and if you put it in hot water it more or less turns into cream of wheat. You can break them apart if you can tell by how it's shaped, though I wish they were individually wrapped.

Coast gard rations. Very similar to this. A little more compact but still like 2000 cal. a package. Also inexpensive, I get mine from the army surplus store for about 7 bucks.
