Loving your videos. FYI, titanium is generally softer and more ductile than steel. It also won't hold an edge anywhere near as long - it's a great material and the shovel makes sense in some circumstances, just wanted to clear up the info about it.

My walking stick is tapered to wedge tightly in my titanium head when needed, I prefer to stand while digging, I am able to stomp the shovel in with my feet! In addition it is a most formidable weapon when configured in this manor! My Titanium head weighs just over 10 ozs, and can be separated and used as an abbreviated chopping and cutting tool as well as performing as a makeshift cooking tool! ( I’ve cooked bacon, trout, and eggs on it) It will never rust and holds a decent edge, but could be sharpened with a rock if needed! I’m currently carrying it in a pocket in my backpack next to a fossils folding bowl, negating the need for a cover! For me it’s a very useful tool! Of coarse it’s not for everyone.

Great video. I have one of those cheap coghlans camp shovel and the shovel keeps loosening when I dig. Then I have that German shovel and pick combo. I’d rather use that one because of its durability. One modification I’m considering on doing to it is drilling a couple of holes through the metal part of the handle into the wood and adding heavy duty screws, so if the wood does break, I can unscrew the screws, dig or burn out the excess and replace handle in the field. I'm an owner of the German model. A few years newer than the one in the video. My shovel came with the original leather sheath. But just a few comments. 1. One thing people neglect to think about with folding shovels or just any shovel with one or more joints. Grit is going to get into the joint(s) and compromise the shovel. Either weakening the joint or by making the joint very inflexible. With the German model, the joint is solid metal and is very thick. I find it unlikely this joint will ever break from any normal use. But the grit will make it very stiff and very difficult to open and close. I can't stress enough that you need to do maintenance on a folding shovel. Clean around the joints and oil them after use. 2. The German shovel is solid as hell. The connection between the blade and the handle is well done. I can't imagine the handle slipping off this shovel. And I wouldn't recommend reinforcing the handle to the blade. You might end up actually compromising this joint instead of strengthening it. 3. The pick on this shovel I found to be a bit useless. It is pretty small and not very long. You can get the same effect and with more effectiveness by putting the shovel at a 90 degree. To be honest, the pick is probably the only real negative I'd give this shovel. I've often wondered if the pick was intended more as a weapon than a digging tool.

The shovel is a digging tool but whether you have it with you depends in part on weight and convenient carry. If it weighs too much it stays in the truck, same if it's too awkward to carry.

I'm glad to have found this channel and thank you for a really great testing and debate on such an underrated topic. I Helped me confirm my previous decision. I have them all as well, including the titanium one, I have spent way too much money on all my shovels. I live in the chihuahuan desert south west, near the Rio Grande. I would choose the CS special forces, why? Because I can make a long handle and stand on / jump push the shovel in the ground. I can dig deeper with less effort with a long handle, better fighting tool. Weight savings - I wont need a hatchet, I wont need a machete, I'll still have a shovel. Also, using the shovel itself I have fashioned a Y branch handle and turned it into a pick / rake as well it was easy of course it takes time to do this. Another shovel item worth its weight is the russian titanium trowel as it doubles as a decent spear head, super light weight check it out some time.

Good comparison evaluations. Personally, I'm a diehard CS fan, I find it more functional when, for example, digging a hole to crap in. I want it deeper than wide, and the handle is more conducive to gaining depth IMHO. Also, when used defensively, I prefer a two-handed thrusting motion over swinging it, for quicker recovery and less time for the opponent critter to react. The CSX also has fewer failure points, and in a real pinch you can used the sharpened edge to carve a new handle for it. The real problem then would be having a way to secure it if the screw is gone (if you have the screw but no driver you can pound it home with a rock).

for the gerber e tool screw. wrap it with "fiber-fix" prior to first use. its a fiber type tape that you wet down,when it dries it forms a very strong steel like bond. the glock e-tool has a saw in the handle..i wish they would update it to accept recip saw blades...hmmm.. the folding design allows cleaning out snow under a vehicle alot quicker. the folder can also be used to "pry" up logs prior to using you chainsaw to get it off the ground. speaking of chainsaw I use a chainsaw file to form serrations on the shovel edge,it seems to grab and shear roots quicker then a 'knife" style edge and is stronger against rocks the gerber is made in usa the glock is made in austria almost all the others are made in china

Fiber weld is awesome stuff. The root saw(push saw) in the Glock Etool is very brittle and just about worthless, I've broken two of them with very limited moderate force. I love the Glock tool, it's extremely lightweight and strong for what it is, I just discard the saw to save weight.

I had the german and USGI folding shovels break on me when I needed them. The German one still kind of worked after it broke so I'd give it a slight advantage. I was using them to dig tunnels under a very old house was there for like two weeks digging under that house pouring concrete footers for new piers.

Cold steel makes one in a long handled version also. It’s great for a vehicle if you don’t have to pack it. I made a leather sheath for mine and sharpened it. I also drilled the end of the handle and sunk a threaded insert and made a removable T handle. I’ve owned a couple of the others but they don’t compare.

I think I would prefer the Cold Steel myself. It seems to be, by far, my most used tool whenever I am out camping. The shovel paired with my Leatherman are about the only tools I seem to really need. The multitool saw is handy for notching and the pliers for pulling pots off the fire. I think that in most scenarios I just don't see digging being required very often. I can use it to completely process a fire right down to digging a shallow hole for it to burn in. It will also chop, split, and shave quite well. Then, it makes a good fire poke too.

I have a few old school USGI e-tools. Not a fan due to the locking coller. The cold steel Spetznaz shovel is solid for digging and Chopping. Fun to throw like a hawk too. My standby currently is a chicom PLA M308 e-tool. The locking mechanism is a big ass bolt/screw that I really like.

I have a version of the German shovel you showed that has splines and teeth rather than a square block to lock it up. It lets you set the angle of the tools in roughly 15' increments, so you can get a similar, more aggressive angle like on the Gerber rather than limited to straight-90'-folded. I agree that the angle significantly improves the performance. I bought a second one and put a longer handle on it from a log slick, and it is my vehicle tool.

Those Fiskars (gerber) shovels are standard gear in Finnish defense forces and hold up really well. Due to entheching and digging mines and such being big part of strategy here, they go trough a ton of work. And they really need to be durable and effective since we have conscription with a ton of people going trought the training.

Spot on guys. Let's get a camp fire going and feed the dog... Put in a few sticks to prop up the bag and he's got a nice house. Back to the shovels... I'm in FL and you need that right angled end to lift the sand out of a hole as deep as your arm. Next are the vine potatoes and you need the pick to work your way around them and drag them out onto the ground (it's a shame you can't eat 'em, there's a bag of potatoes every two feet or so). Ok, I heard you say you're choosing one. I like the Gerber, but it didn't have a pick (heck, you can find land mines with a pick, pointed forward and not at an angle). You said; "A shovels primary job is to dig". I would say "A shovels primary job is to keep me from having to walk back to the house, get something else, then carry it all back". Somehow, I see the wooden handled ones with the little ball on the end to be useful in battle and could save your life. If you raise the ball up a little bit above the rock you're behind and someone puts a lanyard hole thru the center of it, it's time to call in artillery or an air strike and crawl back where you came from (no sniper worth his or her salt can resist a little wooden ball on the end of a stick). There, you can toss it on the pile and get a new one. You would never know that if someone put a hole thru the handle on that Gerber, right?. Ok, my battles are small, I vote for the Gerber with a pick and where does the saw blade come out at? Out the end when the shovels folded? (it needs to use the ones I get a the hardware store). Click, shovel's forward, click, shovel's at an angle, click, click, shovels folded and the picks out.... like that. Oh, and nothing wiggles or bounces. What if it had a hollow end where you could drop some stuff in and even make it dead blow? That'd help, then toss it out when you're done. You guys are almost in business here. All of the weight has to be at the shovel end and the handle needs to able pull out and extend. Just add one little thing to it somewhere that can give you a patent and you're good to go, millionaires. You said you made that handle, you can do it. Take your new shovel, grasp it in the center, push it into the cash flow and hang on.

i got an old wood handle version of these.. i see often the kits generaly have an ax but thats how i generaly use the shuvel.... thinkin they could top the standard by filling out the shape of the ax into the shuvel blade just a little heaver or thicker make the right courner for the hammer side block addin to shape... make the saw below the hammer head and keep sharp shuvel blade shape add a file texture to the handle, sand paper surface on the other side out of the metal like file surface then fill one tube with mini drill put the bit lock as a hole on the edge for more tork lever action make a pin hole for two sections to be used as snips with pin and plyers tip add a right side foot brace and the last addition is how to make the tip act like an oscilater and run on corless battery with a tiny strip of trickle solor panel dont need to be super large panel as long as its a charge producen,,,handle could be a little fatter allow for two handed extra bar by the tip also act as foot press screw in turn any dorection too add a mini light that can be used as a lighter because of the charge and it might top all other survival shuvel combos would love to see one like this dont know who to contact to have it made like that but good idea is open ....i like too the one with the pick inside the shuvel blade engenious might say dodge the spring locks and add cross screw to do the lock lil mini drill can help screw or one bit hole in the side of one last section make it four and five peice long and it might be ultimate then

Great video comparing e tools. I opted to go with the Cold Steel non titanium. It's lighter than the folders and more reliable imo, and it has the strong steel. I have pared it up with a USGI mattock (1944 model from WWII) that I git from an antique store. It can break down and store into a carrier, which I didn't know, It's not all that heavy, and it will do quick work that the folders will do in pick mode. Both the Cold Steel and USGI mattock are reliable, you can replace the handles of either one in the field no problem. You can also fashion a longer handle to improve their performance if you had to use it longer term.

Regular ol' E-tool is all metal, stays firmly locked in position, you'll rarely see a cracked collar nut unless it's been stressed beyond its limitations, which is rare, and I've never seen cracked tubing. Older versions have a pick, newer ones don't anymore. I'm talking about the folding metal shovel that fits in its carrying case. I got one of the Cordura nylon carrying cases for mine instead of the plastic one with snaps just because I like it better, but it doesn't matter since a lot of times I have put it back in its case dirty with mud or whatever. I'm used to digging fighting holes and filling sandbags with it so I find it really comfortable to use.

I like my German tranche shovel. I ded brake the handle splitting wood but I replaced it with a piece of hickory Shovel handle . Have never sharpened the edges and have not tried splitting wood with it since.

I have the titanium shovel and think if I were to do it again. I would probably go with the cold steel or gerber. The titanium does not hold an edge. I was hoping the titanium would hold a better edge and be able to use it like a machete if need be, but it dulls too fast.

We do have rock in Fl, especially, lake county area around Clermont. That's where the Appalachian mountains tail out & back to the earth. Highest point in fl.392ft Sugarloaf Mt.

Here's an idea - find an 1 1/2" round of glass-filled nylon, (may be sacrifice a synthetic shovel handle?) And turn a replacement handle, perhaps half-again longer like that "trench" version. Bolted in place, it can still be replaced on the fly, but you've got a LOT less chance of needing to!

I use a *US PLUMB M1910 WW11 entrenchment pick-mattok* (which is surprisingly lightweight for what it is). It cost me a lot because it's a military antique, but it's an amazing tool and more people should know about it. I pair it with the Glock E tool, which I love. It's extremely lightweight and robust for it's weight. The root saw(push saw that is not suited for cutting anything) is unfortunately brittle and just about useless. I've broken two with only moderate force using them properly, so I simply discard them and save weight. The composite handle has a fair amount of give/bend but holds up well as long as you know it's limits. With these two tools I can dig anything. Cheers.

I've broken multiple e-tools in the field, and once it's done it's done, that's why I'll never buy one. I've been eyeing the titanium and I think I'm gonna have to pick it up. One note about form when digging with a short shovel like that: you want to dig between your legs standing up, throwing the dirt behind you.

After looking at the vid again, I’d still pick the CS. As far as digging goes, all of the shovels needed a Mattock for moving a lot of dirt in the eastern woodlands. I would rather use my legs as much as possible for serious digging. Cutting and attaching a longer handle from a young tree or branch is fairly quick to do. I have actually shortened my handle because I do more hacking and light chopping. And it’s fine for digging a shallow hole. I can still get one hand on the wood and one hand on the steel collar to move dirt, I only sharpened one side though and dulled the other, so I can grip the dull side to scrape the loosened dirt away.The shortened handle also made it so much easier to carry. I use the CS for working around a camp fire as well. Preparing the site to clear away leaves, etc. Moving wood and coals around. And as a base for a small stick stove in the snow. And with the Kydex sheath it becomes a great baton for self defense while hiking in non permissive environment.

The reason you would choose a sharpened spetsnaz over another type of shovel is that many pigs that would take away your large knife or machette or axe would leave a shovel alone.

As a line digging fire fighter for 4 seasons I want to point out that you can't overstate the necessity of chopping through roots in the woods (constantly) which makes me lean towards the Russian model in a bushcraft situation. However... the collapsible models might be superior for bugout purposes just do to they ability they can be stuffed in your pack. You do not want to be reaching for your good sharp hatchet every time you hit a root. Dang you better like sharpening that hatchet!
