That kit can be also used as perimeter alarm. Stretch the line, close the can on the line to rattle the hooks n weights when it’s hit. Use it to sew clothing too.

I did a lot of this growing up and even now I keep a small kit in my bag. I could feed myself for a long time off of fish. I really wouldn't enjoy that but I could do it lol.

Good idea. I carry a 85' section of Kevlar cordage, and two stainless steel "cards" with pop out hooks in my wallet. Always nice to have a little fishing kit in North Georgia. Streams and ponds all over the place.

Never cane fished as a kid, I was more into catching crawfish, frogs and turtles lol. Definitely worth keeping a small fishing kit with your survival set up. Not like it takes up any space! Great video as always! 👍

I made a little spool like that but instead of using PVC pipe that you heat up and make flat I used a dollar store cutting board. Very thin and already flat. Just cut the shape and add the line.

As a kid I enjoyed my tackle box. I would often start the day with a huge H&H but soon switch to a brim hook, sinker and cork. I got out of a ton of cleaning because MaMaw would gladly take my mess.

Good kit, Jason. I would like to offer a suggestion. The line should be attached to the bottom of the cane pole then ran to the end and attached to prevent loss of the fish and line if the pole breaks. Thanks for sharing.

In a survival situation, or when trying to take on big fish absolutely. Good call. For small fish in small streams I have never found it to be necessary. Thanks for watching!!

Great video man always good stuff anyone interested in something to get started Exotac just put out a new fishing unit. I think it's called the spool tool. Something like that. . It looks awesome. It's about the only thing I don't have from them soon it'll be in my life.

I seen their new little fishing reel set up and it is nice, but one I like better is the rodless reel. It's a real sweet little set up with stainless steel gears for a 3 to 1 crank ratio for spinners and an aluminum body. Really a well made set up and his kick starter was funded many times over. I'm waiting for his RR 2 version to come out in the future as he and I have been emailing and he's working on having a small compartment to carry extra hooks, and some extra tackle. I said that is it's only down fall for "ME". Check out his videos. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIWmhoR5nb5-jK8

Dont use saliva/spit to lube the knot. The digestive enzymes in it will weaken the knot.

Generally catch larger fish when you're not walking in the creek. The big fish are smart enough to know if there's movement in the creek that it could be a predator.

cool idea. I put my fishing kit in an altoid tin, works great..I gotta say, seems like a bit of unnecessary work for the spool though. Probably could have just cut the top of a milk jug cap in that shape or any kind of plastic for that matter.. but sometimes a man needs a good excuse to get out the tools. Thumbs up

In Hawaii, the dirt-poor Japanese farmer immigrants built outdoor hot tubs and had a good soak at least once a week. A good clean supply of sand can be kept as a scrub, stuff that's baked ion the sun a long time - mainly for feet. Some sand on the bottom of the creek stinks and leaving you stinky (I tried it!). Your hands should also be scrubbed well. Certain types of trees supply twigs for carving for tooth picks and to clean under finger and toe nails. Orangewood may've been one, but I am sure there are many types of safe woods. Yes, I've thought of those things, too, and still need better answers.

All that effort to fabricate a spool? Why not just use a spool? Better still, it could double as a bobber. I'd suggest steel weights and a magnet to keep everything from rattling in the steel tin. Also much less likely to lose anything.
@leighrate

In a survival situation you should avoid like the plague cutting fishing line. When Zac Fowler did his KZbin series on lessions he learned whilst winning alone, he was very clear that cutting and trimming line was a very quick way to loose line that you cannot afford to loose.
