Since this is favorite instead of a 3 most needed list, I'll offer stuff I like most. 1. Coffee can stove. It is a 3 pound coffee can made like we did in 1960s cub scouts. Inside is an alcohol stove and a 1 pound coffee can with bails. 2. 32 oz gatorade bottle with paracord around the lip to hang it on my belt, backpack or just about anything else. It's wrapped in gorilla tape. 3. My little lunch cooler haversack. It carries a bunch of cool stuff and there is a plastic removable bucket inside, perfect was washing or gathering water.

you should try making some of your own firestarters,cotton balls dipped in paraffin oil and melted candle wax, let them cool, and they catch a spark easy and burn hot and for awhile! just a little cheaper than buying them and pretty much the same thing!

Four good, solid choices. As for the fire starter, I'm pretty sure that I said in your initial review that although I won't ever buy it (way too much other gear on the Lust List), it is still a pretty solid looking chunk of kit.

If you hike/walk/ramble in the UK as well as Bush Craft, you have to keep your knife out of sight much of the time and to not attract attention it's best to keep the knives smaller (and less threatening looking) when going to some places. I just stick to Mora's at present and they're great. The Crusader 2 cook kit is tough to beat as long as you don't have a thing against Aluminium. When the weather drops you appreciate a full Clipper lighter but there's a fair few good spark rods out there these days that are good so I don't have a favourite.

Thanks Brian! I couldn't agree with you more on the large knife and striker. Experience from my youth forward and in the Scouts with a Bowie style knife is all I need to know. I strongly prefer clip point. Utilizing the striker with a messed up hand or two. Well I'm already at a loss there. Now that canteen/cook cup/stove kit in SS is exactly what I am looking to buy. I'd like a little more with the stove but there may be a way to add to it without adding bulk. The goal is to store them in a sling pack and if needed have the ability to wear them on a belt making room for additional things one might pick up on the way. Several items inside the pack are things able to be mounted outside the pack for fast access again making room to toss additional items inside.

I respect your choices in knives. You mentioned that you had a personal favorite stolen by a low rider. That has always been my concern. My two "survival knives" (because they are always with me when I leave home). I carry a plain blade, old, used original Spyderco Endura in my pocket. I have an Ontario TFI in the car. I have multiple TFIs. If one is stolen, I won't weep like I would if a TOPs knife were stolen. How much do I value the knife (which never gets reviews, by the way)? I gave my son a unit to carry in his car for shtf.
@galenlong80228 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian, good video, the Tahoma is a great knife, hard to beat knife right there. everything you had in here is solid gear, even the lightening strike. I like the idea of bigger is better, so in saying that I really wish they would come out with a new version of the lightening strike, but with a 1/2 " ferro rod that is replaceable. though a little bit larger set screw to hold the rod in place would be needed. I don't know if it would be cost effective but when can you really place a price on your own life. just thinking outside the box.

#1 I definitely agreed on the Canteen Cookware, right in the style of the U. S. Military Canteen Cup etc.. #2 Knives are general, so agree on your knives. The only reason to name a specific brand would be to make information specific to a complete beginner in survival gear. I have Shrades, but there are many good knives for the taking. #3 For the fire starter, the general category item is okay. We can all choose lighters, magnesium rods and so on. Very good choices. Also, did you know that many preppers are getting into Amateur Radio?

I hate thieves! I have had 2 guns stolen from an apartment years ago. One was a Marlin 30-30 that was my first gun. I hope you found who stole your knife? On another note, one survival thing I always carry is a HIGH QUALITY full body rain suit! When weather is so bad you can not get a fire going a rain suit like the Red Head lined rain suit with a sweat shirt & pants on underneath it can keep you warm and dry. Also a hammock with a rainfly to get you out of inclement weather quick, and off the ground.

@SurvivalOnPurpose6 жыл бұрын

@jamesaritchie28 жыл бұрын
As you might expect, I think the sword-like knife is amateurish, and dangerous. I also think the Lightning Strike is not only a useless gimmick, but stops you from counting an object that is worth showing. The cook kit is a good one, though.. It needs the alcohol burner to be good enough to matter in a survival situation, but it's a good start as is. I prefer the Pathfinder bottle kit because a lot more gear goes into a far smaller space, but the canteen kit is good.
@SurvivalOnPurpose8 жыл бұрын
+James Ritchie As you might expect, I think the knife is a very good one tool choice. And I don't see how you can call the Lightning Strike "useless". I only bought it for dire emergencies but I have used it a few times in demonstrations and it has worked flawlessly EVERY time. That seems to be the very opposite of useless. I have the bottle kit also but for some reason I like the canteen better. Go figure.
@richardelliott95113 жыл бұрын
Good choices even though you cheated a bit on the knives, I would have also. I must have watched this one before, went to push the like button and it was already done. I have that same canteen and love it. Every time I go out I have the debate with my self over big knife, hatchet or saw, I'm like a fish and flip flop back and forth on that one, usually depending on what wood I expect to be availible if any or who's opinion I listened to most recently. My big "but" is over that fire rod, can't get past the $, for the same amount I can have multiple good big 5 or 6 inch fire steels, which are far easier to use than all of those little ones that are so popular, stashed every where, so I never have to worry about losing one or being more than a couple of steps from a back up. I respect your choice just not the same priority as mine. My life is littered with small pieces of gear that I have lost or that just plain disappeared so back ups are most important for me. Yeah, I know you said survival not camping but the two can be very hard to seperate and hopefully most of us will never have to experience a true survival situation. As usual, nice job and enjoyed your presentation.👍

I'll check it out Thanx, A couple of years ago, I bought from Grizzly Fire starters a Magnisium Rod, The two I bought, one comes with a wood handle the other one foods into a meral, Both have a ferrosium rod on a larger piece of nagnisium, Tgat stuff will burn on water, so I have a nice supply of tgat too, Thanx, Brian. I pulled the trigger on the Battle Horse Attitude, But I'm having mine thinned down to 5/32" and curved with a High Scandi Vex Grind with a White Handle with a Blue Liner. I almost seriously injured my foot with my Bokor Plus Black Vox Rold. The knife was dangerously loose in the sheath that stuck me deep into my foot, it took 3 days to stop the bleeding, but since my tetanus shot is still good I Doctored myself, although I like the look of it and is fairly well made. So I took the Frog off my Cold Steel Sheath and it fit perfectly, now my Rold Sheath has a belt carry and I love it, F.Y.I..

i would love to here a real survival situation you've been in .

Thankfully, I have never been in one. I think practicing and improving our skills to be prepared helps keep us out of "survival situations" because we don't make as many potentially dangerous mistakes and decisions.

Hi Brian, about the Tahoma, 2 things, what are the 2 slots on the top of the knife's spine about midway back for? Why did you choose the Tahoma over say a BK7? They both have similar features. Just curious.

The notches are for scoring and I chose it because I liked it and I knew Andy a little and wanted to support him.

+Survival On Purpose Btw, I tried out my schrade 51 today. I made a couple of walking staffs. It did a really good job and the spine scrapes like crazy. I was impressed at how agile it is and versatile. I also got to try out my Ontario Marine Raider. That is one heck of a chopper. Really nice. I would like to get a 7" blade schrade now for batonning. I think the Midwest scales are the way to go with schrade instead of the rubbery type. Thanks for your reviews.
