Amazon sells these boxes for $2 each. I use them instead of the ubiquitous Altoids box because they are 1 inch larger in length & width and .5 inch more in depth. So without sacrificing the convenience of a pocket carry your Trail Life guys can include things like mini Bic lighters, UCO matches, even a decent full size Swiss Army or Leatherman. One of my most scaled down survival kit options requires 4 pockets. Two back pockets, two cargo pockets. Into each cargo pocket goes one of these steel tins divided as “tools/fire” and “water/medical”. There’s a mini Bic in each & button compass in each. Then one back pocket holds a single wall metal water bottle & nesting cup and the other holds a complete NKJV Bible that measures 3.5”x5.5” I include a couple Fresnel lenses in the Word and a tiny notebook. 3 of the 4 pockets are also equipped with a 3mil forty gallon contractors big folded down into craft bags and 20 feet of 275 micro cord. Enough to dummy up a rain poncho, browse bed and overhead rain cover. Add the Buck 110 and Leatherman Wave on my belt and what’s great about this choice of solutions is that one doesn’t feel weighted down or clink-clanky on trail. Nor is any Bat Belt or heavy ruck required. Anyhow it would make a great team project to furnish the kids with one of these each & give them a week to build the ultimate survival kit. Then review them as a group. Or even do some field skills practice.
