That was lucky. I had everything except for tinfoil, then I remembered my hat!

Thanks for the information, 2 square feet of aluminum foil can be folded int a bowl to boil water, learned that from a SFGp operator. I guess he took origami to heart.
@jamescooper2618 Жыл бұрын
I have found that if aluminum foil is folded, kit will leak water, even the heavy duty kind. One thing I have it for is to hold fire tinders up off the wet ground to get a fire started bt there are many uses for it.

Have you had any experience with the “ survival cards” available on Amazon? Basically….cards that have a variety of fish hooks, frog gigs, spear points…cutting tools etc. Again all on a stainless steel “ card” …a few cards actually..contained in a “ wallet”. Perhaps get a set and evaluate them for function. The are relatively inexpensive

I picked up some metal Austrian Army Only (“Heeres Eigentum”) canteens that are special. Plastic cap on a detachable/replaceable bead chain. They unfortunately don’t fit my GI canteen cups. I almost always carry in addition a GI canteen with cup.

Do you have two "different" protractors, or 2 of the same type?
@RangerSurvivalandFieldCraft3 жыл бұрын
Two of the same type, one is set up with a piece of string to read azimuth and distance quickly, while the other is for planning routes, etc.

Blade quality is very high, and it's still carbon (unless you order stainless specifically). Light, easily sharpened, easy customized, strong enough, big enough and most models are under $25. Not too many years ago you could get them for half that, they price increase follows matierals costs and expanded demand. When they were $12, you could throw on in every tool or tackle box, your car, one dedicated for a BOB... basically where ever you would want a knife. You can trust your life to it, and there is no reason even with the price increase to not have a couple.

anyone mind explaining to me what level 1, level 2, and level 3 mean? I can't seem to work my googling skills correctly for this.
@RangerSurvivalandFieldCraft4 жыл бұрын
Craig Diaz The 3 levels are a simplified way of knowing what to pack and how to pack a survival kit explained in the ranger handbook. Newer versions of the handbook seem to have omitted the survival chapter, but I think it page 14-4 at least in the 2013 version. Level one is items carried in the pockets, EDC, level two is items worn on/in fight equipment, and level 3 is items inside the rucksack these being shelter and additional items to supplement the other two levels. After SERE I cross-referenced what I learned there with ranger school and came up with my own kit based on the items I carried. Hope this helps.

@@RangerSurvivalandFieldCraft That was helpful! thank you! I just downloaded the free 2011 version, which indeed has this section.
@mirv6953 жыл бұрын
@@RangerSurvivalandFieldCraft thanks for the clarification sir. As an aside, it looks like the SERE/Survival Section has been removed in more recent editions of the Handbook. Led to some confusion on my part. I would advise referencing the chapter and edition when you reference the manual in your videos.

Great stuff. YIneducated question , you mentioned using the tinfoil for leaving a boot imprint. how and why? Nate
@RangerSurvivalandFieldCraft4 жыл бұрын
Journeyman 71 The boot imprint would be for friendly search and rescue so they could track you. Find a flat patch of ground that’s somewhat soft and clear of too many rock. Layout the tinfoil and make a boot imprint by stepping on it. Leave that imprint with an emergency signal left behind if you decide to walk out of a survival situation. If SAR comes by and finds the signal they’ll have your boot print and will be able to track you. Tip: leave an arrow pointing your direction of travel if you do leave that area.

Thanks again, Skipper, for a great site for sharing. I found a classic, bargain, green Ultimate Torsopack at a Goodwill. I like it well as a Level 2 kit. It has 2 well-fitting 28-ounce (I wish they were liters) sport drink bottle-sized outside pockets. It holds an REI covered pot/skillet. with more space left. The pack can be crossed comfortably diagonally over the back and chest, front or back, or mounted horizontally atop a ruck like my medium ALCE. It also makes a great bicycle butt pack. It has handy Clif Bar sized zipper pouches on the belt. I had to clean up some flaking black inner cover material, but no big deal. I have replaced the red zipper tabs with stopgap smallish key rings. I heartily recommend it. An unencumbering pack for fighting out of a little if necessary. Convenient for maneuvering in high mountain valleys. Feels emergency-jump worthy. Not too big, not too small. Can hold enough to help save your life long term. If you pray, do it regularly?
