I bought a Walmart exclusive version of the Prodigy for around 50 or 60 bucks a few years back. I liked/bought it because their exclusive version does not have serrations - I kinda hate serrations (which is why I haven't picked up that SOG - which my local Walmart stocks). The price went up over the years but when the Walmart version was discontinued and put on clearance I bought two more for around $50. Definitely worth having a couple extra of them, IMO - might put the extra two in kits, bags or something. Because TN has no knife specific laws (some locations are off limits) I sometimes carry the Prodigy when I am just out and about. I like the strength of a fixed blade and, honestly, just enjoy carrying a fixed blade. I prefer high carbon steels to stainless but stainless has it's place and Gerber did a good job on it. I wouldn't call it the best/my favorite knife ever but it is certainly darn good, IMO

Actually I read years ago that they were going to discontinue The Prodigy but at the Walmart where I live they still have them

@@MasterK9Trainer Cool. It was said probably six or eight years ago that they were discontinued. That was when I bought my first one because I wanted to get one before they went away. They did go away from all the locations in my area at the time - but a few months later they came back. Then a little over two years ago, maybe, all the locations in my area put them on clearance and got rid of them. I haven't seen any, since and I have heard that they are now discontinued, for sure. My guess is that they had so many that there are still a few left in some of the warehouses/distribution centers that are still being sent to stores in those areas. Who knows, though?

Agree with you about the Gerber Bear Grylls knife. It is one of the best camp knives I have used. Great textured grip, bright colors if you drop it and good enough steel to open hot dogs packs or cut up worms for fishing. Most importantly, I have no problem giving to a young person at the camp to use based on the low price.

Hey Bryan, Thanks for sharing some of our favorites with us! Nice that you showed a range of knives of different prices for people on different budgets. I'm a subscriber, so I already knew what your #1 would be before you brought it out . . . The Randall Made Knives - Model 1! Such a classic, beautiful knife! I hope to get one of those someday! When I was in scouts, I also had my beloved Swiss Army Knife that my Grandparents gave me. I carried that on many camping and backpacking trips! I still have it, but now I have switched over to a Leatherman because I feel it is easier to access the tools, and I have a model that I can swap out different screw bits - very handy! I also really like having the needle-nose pliers - those are helpful for so many things! I saw the Bible on your bookshelf at the start of the video - nice to know you're a fellow brother in Christ!

I've always been a fan of Morakniv, their cheapest model is about $10 and very durable, and there's also a bunch of $15-30 models which have some improvements. Of course it has its flaws (doesn't hold an edge as long as more expensive knives), but they're amazing for people who get started with survival or bushcraft and have a limited budget.

I agree with you on all but the Bear Grylls knife. I've had the USMC Kabar for 40 years. I also have the Buck 119, Schrade SCHF9, SCHF2sm,Schf14, Gerber plain edge Prodigy, Cold Steel Bushman,Camillus ST6 tribute knife, Mora Companion and Light My Fire, Uncle Henry Golden Spike, Buck 470 and several others. I also have about 50 or 60 folders. I can recommend all of them, but for different uses. Knives don't have to be Randalls to be useful.

I will testify that the Gerber Prodigy is one hell of a workhorse. Ive had mine for years. Its withstood daily abuse. The finish is just about gone and the sheath has just about completely fallen apart but the knife itself still holds up! Would definitely buy another one even at the $80 price point but so far i dont need to. Great freakin knife!

I am going to add that WTG Mt Leguna to my stash. The knife from Finland is one of my favorites! I got it in 2016 and it was under $50...to me, the sheath was worth that. They shipped it promptly, arrived in NYC customs, and stayed there for six weeks! Reading the update from the manufacturer was worth the wait...something was lost in translation but I was entertained. It is built like a tank and no, I have never tried to pronounce the name. Back in 1982, I had a Marine friend who would show off a similar Randall knife, and, it could have been the Bourbon, but I swear we heard angels sing every time he brought it out.

Great video! I remember Pres. Ronald Reagan talking about the Randall Made knife he carried in WW2 and was still using it in the 1980's. That is quality. The BG knife got a bad rap when the first batch they produced broke at the pommel. They fixed the problem but the word on the street was it was simply junk. I have had no problems with mine and have used it a lot. I think some people just like to complain. I like every knife you showed Brian. Keep up the good work. Thanks!

I would love to see a video of double edge knives for self defense. My friend is going to make a video about sometimes you are too close quarters to pull your handgun. You need to cause enough pain to back them off before you draw. A double edge cuts both ways and is a lot more versatile in a fight for your life.

On the bear grills ultimate survival knife that you shown. I would recommend against it as mine was used for camp tasks. Nothing major, no batoning. The plastic sheath started to come apart, where the seam was sealed together, causing it to become loose in the sheath. Also, early models had an issue where you couldn't use the pummel hammer end, or it would break it with light use. It was fixed in later models, but there is no way to tell the two versions apart when buying used.

G'day mate, fair enough. I will say the Ulitmate "Pro" version, addressed many issues from the originals, but they had such a bad rep to start with, it didn't get its due. To be honest I reckon the updated sheath is outstanding, in terms of of being robust, quite streamlined, weather resistant, integral ferro rod and its housing. In fairness the sharpener aint great, but at least its functional and there to get out of strife. For sure, full tang, and I believe welded pommel, is a big + too. And I must say the upgrade to 9Cr18Mov steel is pretty good in my experience .......especially for the dough, ....... and I've given it a fair ol' beating ; ). Anyway, always one for debate. Hava good one mate. Cheers Duke.

You should do a favorite fire starters since you like fire so much. The funny thing is every knife you showed that I have (Bear Grylls [×2], $25, Gerber Strongarm, $20, Buck 119 $20), I got in mint condition in a pawn shop or on clearance. Gerber REALLY stands behind their products. The Strongarm I got in the pawnshop did not have the complete sheath so they sent me the other pieces free of charge. The very first version of the Bear Grylls knife, the pommel would come off hammering with it. They fixed it, but the reputation for the knife got really tarnished from that. The best "Bear Grylls product is actually a tripple wall 20 ounce water bottle. Best 20 ounce insulated water bottle ever made belive it or not. The American made "classic" knives all have good cross guards which unfortunately can REALLY get overlooked by knife makers, but if you REALLY want to get HURT, slip down on a knife that does not have a good cross guard. Jim Bowie found out about that the HARD way apparently in a knife fight before he designed his classic knife and incorporated a substantial cross guard as a result.

Some neat knives, and that Randall is beautiful! Closest I've got is a Cold Steel R1, and a BlackJack Model 7. On the Randall and the copies, I've never understood why the retention strap fastens over the crossguard on the EDGED side of the blade. It would make so much more sense to have it fasten over the spine side of the crossguard. As it is, you have to be somewhat careful about drawing and resheathing it so you don't cut the strap.

I've had a Buck stockman pocket knife for over 30 years and have used the heck out of it and have a couple of 110s. I had wanted a 192/Vanguard for years and finally bought one about a year ago but was never a fan of the 119 and the others in that line. Then about 6 months ago I was looking for a smallish hunting style fixed blade and decided to try the 102. I like it so much I recently bought a 117 and am seriously thinking about buying the rest in the 100 phenolic handled series just to have a complete set which I know is silly because I'll never use them all the way they were intended. I think I may need an intervention. 😂

Try Peltonen Knives. Great knives, adopted by Finish and some other NATO armies. Can be ordered from Lamnia store with the price under $100. Blade shape and steel is similar to Terava. There are 3 sizes: M95 (blade length 150 mm), M07 (115 mm) and M23 (65 mm). There are options with teflon or cerakote coating and uncoated (like Terava). I'm using them for a while (my outdoor choice M95+M23) and can recommend without a doubt.

I have owned the OG Bear Grylls knife since it was first available. I bought both versions (plain and serrated) just to see which one was handier and have used the plain edged one the most. I think the full tang version is def an upgrade but honestly, if you just don't abuse the old version, it's a beast of a knife in its own right. The only gen purpose fixed blade I keep with me 90% of time though is a Mora. I own three Mora's and although I have sharpened one of them until it's almost gone, I have never had one break on me.

G'day Bryan, up front. I do enjoy these kinda vids, because, I get to see a "whatever range" and it's your particular favs. Crickey mate, how can anyone ever say anything is the "best" knife, ..... any idea how many designs total are out there ; ) And it also goes to show a good knife ...... is not necessarily an expensive knife. Sentiment is important for a knife guy too IMO. (for me its a vintage, and indeed very modest, Schrade lil' finger, 156OT in 440A). Interesting the BG job got a gig, (yes plenty of hate), in fairness I did hang out for the "Ultimate Pro" model, but in any case, I reckon its a ripper for the dough. Your No, 1 is awesome, I reckon that's an absolute beauty in anyone's language. I could also bend it side-to-side since it was weakly constructed. I normally like your videos. But, I just have to shake my head at the BG review. Note: I have several Gerber knives, including one that according to Gerber is made internationally, and they are all top notch. One I have used since 1989 and deployed with it. USMC 1986 - 1994

Did you watch my videos about the BG knife, especially the 1-year follow up? I beat the heck out of mine and it held up fine. Maybe they have lowered their standards.

lots of great knives there and we all have our favorites and you definitely have some good choices there that I like and own as well. As far as the bushcraft community not liking the Bear Grylls knife, well in my opinion the so called bushcraft community is a Joke and most of them would not know a good knife if it jumped up and bit them in the ass so who really cares what they have to say. Expensive or name brand does not always mean it is a good knife and there are many budget knifes out there that are way better then these $200 $300 plus knives in my opinion.

Yeah, Bear Grylls is responsible for a LOT of people getting into the woods and learning skills. Although I have to call BS shock value on the drinking his own pee. That just ain't right.

Anyone that says a buck 119 is trustworthy loses all credibility to me. I've broken more of them than I care to admit, finally realized their just not made for hard use.

It’s the knife that made the Buck knife company when it was just getting started. That one and the 110 lock back folder are classics, but neither are intended for really hard use. They’re the great grandparents of today’s buck knives.

@@benbrown5159 sure a pre 1960 119 is a heck of a knife, been getting worse ever since. Kind of a joke of a blade in my circles, which is exceptionally sad considering it's roots. At almost 60yrs old, I've been around a few real 119s and the newer ones don't even come close.
