You are right, it is crucial to have a good sheet for your knife. I have had a lot of knives in my long life, my most used knife are the Victorinox Forest which I always carry when I am out in the nature, which model are your Victorinox ? My favorite knives are the excellent Norwegian Helle Knives, I have several Helle Knives, one of them a rare hunting model no longer in production, a Norwegian Same tried to swap my Helle hunting knife for 3 handmade Same knives plus 500,- kroner, but I will keep that knife !

Hey Lars, I’m a bit of a leather working hobbyist and knife enthusiast. I have found that poorly fitting sheaths can sometimes be fixed by soaking them in water and then forming them around the knife. Also melting beeswax into the leather can help fix the shape to the knife.

Sheath: the problem is that everyone seems to have their own idea of what a sheath should be! My solution is to have a bespoke sheath made for my knife if I feel that the one provided is not up to scratch. Simple solution. I won't ever condemn a knife just because I dislike the sheath. The tactical component didn't receive much attention. As I agree with you that I seldom carry only one knife, here is my selection: Large knife (tactical): Cold Steel Trail Master San Mai III. I would have this mostly when I will be out there for longer periods - especially if I was anticipating some heavy work, like shelter building etc. The first thing I did on receiving my Trail Master was order a custom sheath from Rob Evans, Wales, and I'm delighted with it. Belt knife: Like you, I'd most definitely always have the CS SRK San Mai III on my belt. Then, I'd always have a Victorinox of some sort, depending on what the conditions are likely to be. Mostly that would be a Ranger Grip version with the saw, amid other tools. If the situation demands that a pliers is essential for some reason, I'd consider the Victorinox Swiss Tool, that has the pliers. However, sometimes I would seriously consider taking a Silky Gomboy (or a Big Boy, depending on the anticipated workload.). I would only consider an axe if the outing would be to a permanent/semi-permanent camp site, and for some extended period. Comments invited!

Have you ever seen the Grohmann Canadian hunting knives? The #1 is the first. It wasn’t made for survival, but for skinning large game, hunting, camp knife. If you see this and take a look, you’ll think the handle is silly, but it actually works super well for what it’s meant for. The steel isn’t a super steel, but in the 60’s, and to some today, it was preferable to have an easy to sharpen blade when you’re out for a couple weeks. The blade is clearly shaped to make skinning easier, and the handle to do certain tasks, but as I said, no for building a house in the woods.🙂 It won awards when it came out, and has been copied by many many companies. Usually called the Canadian Belt Knife, but they never quite get it right. Check them out if you get a chance. Most people that have them here love them

More on knives: I own a drawer full of custom, useful knives. The ones I have kept feature good steel and Classic Woodcraft designs. Just now, I was revisiting and polishing a smaller-sized Evanki knife. Despite living in a drawer, the steel remains shiny and the edge is sharp (I keep it in the natural wood sheath, so no amazement there.) I continue to find that a well-designed leather sheath retains MY knives. I do own a Mora wood/chip carving knife that came with a useless hard vinyl sheath. MY Kansbol is like yours: a fine sheath out of the box.

Thank you Lars! I realize some people may find my childhood fascination with knives to be a problem and by the time I had a bullhead on the end of the blade while fishing underwater, I was proud of my prowess. but the plan as I see it now was to replace them; you can't hunt worms with a knife for example. What I really needed was something like current in the ground to drive the worms out for fishing.

Funny, I own quite a few 'bushcraft' knives & have made sheaths/handles myself, but the one I always take out is a £10 wrecking chisel. Stainless steel & a plastic holster ... It just works. Super reliable (packaging had a diagram of a claw hammer striking its spine as a possible use) + less incriminating blade profile (UK) while doing the same job.

Im happy you focused heavily on the sheath. Ive got a draw fulll of empty Gerber sheaths and other such brans that supply sheaths that only cover the blade with a dome retainer . My every day carry for the last couple of years was a cold steel mainly because the synthetic sheath cover 90% of the handle . Down side the cold steel stainless couldnt handle blood, forgot to clean it for once and the edge is now serrated.

For cutting wood I use Filipino made "Sundang" bolo machete made by locals not a factory. And for crafting I use "Gerber" multitool if the weight of the backpack is not a problem I take my sharp WW1 german axe it is about 1 kilogram heavy blade. For sawing wood I like the foldable Katanaboy 500 from silkysaws. For a personal all purpose knife the best is one someone makes for You so it is unique. I hade two, but I lost em so I keep buying the Walther knives. They are cheap, but very good quality and designs.

Most survival type knives are designed for guys who have seen too many Rambo movies. Too big, too many accessories, too many functions and you'll find the serrations and crap are really pretty close to useless in a real world situation. You'll never need 90% of them, including the fishhooks in the handle - LOL. That 8 inch blade (usually cheap steel that's going to break if you ever really test it) is like trying to use a 2 pound sledge as your only hammer. Too big, too cumbersome. I ended up with a 4 inch fixed blade narrow profile Buck Woodsman. Not the bigger one, the small one for "small game" (guts and skins deer just fine, FYI). I have a folding saw in my pack and wouldn't hesitate to field dress an elk or moose with that combo of knife/saw. If there's anything else I've ever needed out of a knife, I don't know what it would be. You can clean small birds like grouse just fine with it too. Buck knives are a pain in the ass to sharpen, however. Be forewarned.

Lars years ago when Cold steel first came out with the SRK-1 I got one love it then a few years later was on a hunting trip on horse back the knife was harchet to my shoulder. When arriving at our distnation some 4 hours later No knife it was taken out of my sheath by ALIENS I guess.I was a long ride straight up switch backs all granit mountain side, here in the serrias in California . We all looked for it going down 6 days later but nothing it's either still there or some one else is very happy but sheathless . I got another one as soon as we got back It was all my fault I did not have it locked in it was just on the nug part of the sheath not the click and you know it's lock .I do have many knives I have collectd over the years but my favorite of all store bought knives for true survivl what ever that means any more. I have a piggy back unit the ontario SP-53 Bolo and there Falcon knife and always the fixed blade knife my dad and I made togtherout of a file back in 1956 I think now at 81 I am set in my ways and for damn sure need no knew knives . Happy Trails young man, and High to all the ninja's and give that great dog a good rub for me .
