IN TODAYS KNIFE WORLD FEW TALK OF THE FOLDING KNIFE AS A PROPER BUSHCRAFT / WOODSCRAFT TOOL. YET I NTHE PAST THE FOLDING WAS A BIG PART OF THE WOODSCRAFT SKILLS. THE GREAT NESSMUK CARRIED A FOLDING KNIFE AS PART OF HIS KIT TO HANDLE THE SMALL CUTTING CHORES . A BIG BELT KNIFE IS COMMON TODAY BUT DONT RULE OUT THE HUMBEL FOLDING KNIFE IF IT IS OF GOOD QUALITY PREPER SHARPNESS IT WILL SERVE WELL.

At six years old my stepfather gave me my first pocket knife and it was a Barlow. My first fixed blade knife was a Buck 119, I was eight years old. I got my first firearm that year too, a Winchester. 22 tube fed slide action rifle. Needless to say, I was one happy camper. My stepfather was an awesome man and started teaching me skills at a young age.

I still have my Cub Scout Knife as well. I got it when I was seven years old, back in 1959. I keep it not-quite shaving sharp. It has done many jobs well. About ten years ago, I placed it in "Retired" status; this, due to my increasing absent-mindedness. I feared I might misplace it. It rests in a place of honor on my fireplace mantle. It is good to know that there are those who still keep some traditions alive. Carry on, Scout!

My Dad always carried a Case 6295 whenever we were out. He did everything under the sun with that knife! From cutting up food to making traps and triggers. That knife is one of my most prized possessions. The memories I have of him with that knife make it priceless.

That presentation is nicely done. It´s always nice to see that knives that just work do not do it by chance. It´s the result of careful design. The classics are still around for a reason. The folder also is less visible and doesn´t spook people you meet. In my neck of the woods that might be an advantage.

I’ve had the Uncle Henry version for decades, one of the early ones with the heat treated stainless blade. Perfect for processing deer. The saw is more for the pelvis than the breastbone. The blade is heavy enough to just rip up through the cartilage around the breastbone. But it’s also light enough and maneuverable enough for deboning. The Buck 110 is good, too, but I prefer the slightly longer, thinner blade on the Schrade. Heck, I’ve even used it to clean fish. That’s pretty versatile! 😃

To me, folding knives is an infinitely more interesting topic than fixed blades. These are the knives you keep on you everyday. People have fixated on fixes blades for so long. But, more and more I see them putting their fixed blades in their pack, or even just in their vehicle. As you gain more experience, you realize fixed blades are just cumbersome. And, with enough practice, you can meet all your needs with a proper folding knife.

Great video! As a teenager back in the 70's, I always carried a Schrade Uncle Henry LB7 Bear Paw for big work and either a Schrade Barlow or a Case 2 bladed Copperhead detailed work. The 2 knife combo never let me down or left me feeling like I needed more knife. I carried the 2 knife system for 20 years in the Army I still to this day carry a 2 knife system.

I have a Fieldmaster kicking around somewhere. However, my favorite for a bushcraft/fieldcraft folder is the Victorinox Rangergrip 78. I realize it doesn't have the scissors, but it has the larger saw and main blade. In addition, the main blade is a lock back and is a one hand opener.

This style of folder is very old, they usually hade two blades, one clip and one with a straight back (Case still makes them like that). I have a Schrade like yours, it's a big heavy knife, but don't weigh more than a Buck 110 actually. Perhaps a little less even!?

Good point and excellent video brother! Something to mention is Nessmuk and all these guys what they did is develop a system that worked for them and their preferences. My dad just gave me his old case knife he had in Vietnam on a destroyer in the navy. I don’t want to use it because of its history, but it’s still a awesome knife. Unbelievably strong lock up still like yours. Blades were used every single day on rigging lines. Grind’s aren’t even, yet ludicrous sharp. My dad said only one guy on the destroyer knew how to sharpen knives so all the sailors would give him their knives to sharpen 😅. I cleaned it up and sharpened it just the way his friend did it and didn’t change the angles. I think I’m going to frame it, even though it’s a great knife still. I’ve never seen a knife so worn yet so tight still. I’d depend on that knife any day even still.

Fully agree with the video but its a pull saw. SAK's have a push and pull saw. Not that that matters much. In fact Les Hiddins know as 'The Bush Tucker Man' used a simple non locking folding knife almost all the time. Of course 'tucker' means food because 80% or more of what you do has to do with food prep. The reason why I prefer a fixed blade for food prep just has to do with cleaning the knife. If the knife is all covered with guts and blood I want to be able to piss it clean. Of course rins of with a little fresh water. There's a reason you don't see folding knives in a professional kitchen. But CAN they do the job? Absolutely.

If I may correct you, it’s a 225 OT. OT for Old Timer. I have an older US made example that’s in really good condition. I also have a US made 25 OT . The main blade on it has been sharpened a bit it’s still in pretty good condition. I really enjoy what you do on your videos and have been subbed for around 3 years now, possibly longer. Take care now.

Nice concept for this knife but what use is the not easily replaced saw once it dulls? A ferro striker? Reground to an awl? I've prefered the 25 OT for having two sharpenable blades. Got my first in the '70's and a gifted one in the early '80's. I rarely go into the woods without one. A fantastic backup if not a light weekend primary. A separate, longer, more efficient saw seems a better option.

As fir fire wood i just let the fire do the cutting, i pull up dead fall branches and drag them up broken end first and just keep feeding it into the fire, big branvhes i lay across the fire and cut it in half with fire, i lay and/or(drive stakes into the ground to make stacking brackets) stack suitable logs next to the fire to make a radient heat reflector, thank you for the informative and welld done video,,, doing is the best xchool. Trial and error leads to inovations, necessity is the mother of invention,,,remember, the most important And valuable tool you have in ANY situation is y o u r Brain. That self defense move in the commercial is called "Aiming the Spear" from the Tracy's Kenpo karate, a most useful technique from the orange(2nd color belt) belt kata, dart from yellow belts id a finisher but you have to be willing to take a persons sight from at least 1 eye., the wrist lock they teack will set up the finishing move with strike to the tripple heater area of the jaw right in front of the ear either side, a knock out pressurd point(this combo move you would be wise to practice it until you own it. Same with any self defense move, you Must commit 100%, you need to,,,recognize a situation coming, no metter how surprised you are,,,you have to bait them in(unless of course in casses of total surprise),,,set them up for what you want to do, exicute your finishing moves flawlessly. Aiming the spear is a 2 part technique, you break the nose by splattering across one eye or the othe then deliver an open fist blow to the solar plexus just below the sternum,,,fight over,,,this all transpires in milisecons from start of the assault to your lsst movement,,,practice untill you own ot, pay attention to where you are and whats going on, in an encounter commit 100%, if you own aiming the spear, really own it there ia sothing the attacker can di is go down, and if you punish them with "the dance of death" good for you, but dont beat their face, head and body too badly, you dont want to get arrested, best to just defuse the situstion annd move away to a safe place, and remember what happened exactly, dont talk to the police any more than you have to, dont 'offer' them info, they try to make you the crimial no matter how stellar your reputation is. I have been in 4 situations involving 3 guys at a time, each time some cop on the scene wanted to arrest me because i layed them out, 2 time i interviened and rescued women in distress being attacked by know rapist gangs(i didnt know they were rapist), one in 1979 they were beating a struggling woman and trying to get her into a van on a bloomingdales parking lot, i layed em out, a cop on scene wanted to arrest Me! A ranking officer sent me packing and put me down as an inocent good Samaritan saving the woman and dissappearing,,,a nurse at 3AM got out of her car on a dark street in front of her inner city home when accosted by 3 thugs, in 2001 just as i walked around the corner with my girlfriend out on our regular 5 mile late night walk, i laid them out, again one of the cops wanted to arrest me on the scene, i knew the Sgt. on scene who sent my girl and i packing for home, same repore, good Samaritan yadda yadda yadda,,,the other 4 times were bloody bar fights, no cops called. One more thing, the bad guys practice their criminal skills to flawless perfection and a situation evolves lightning fast, so be prepared,,,carry if you can, commit if you draw, you cant flourish or brandish,,,good luck, Again, thank yuo for an excellent video on usable bushcraft ❤❤❤❤❤😮😊

A Case stockman is a really good alternative. You have three blades before you absolutely have to sharpen. My dad used a stockman or trapper moar of his life.....then went to cheap buxk kickbacks because he hated to sharpen....he used a fine belt sander on them in his later years he hated sharpening so much. He was a master machinist in the nuclear industry.....i think he lapped and sharpened tools for so long he got to hating it.

I've found the Cold Steel Bushman knives to be a cheap, hard-working chopper, well suited to the Batoning chores you may need. Big, but very lightweight strapped to your pack. Add a short handle, it's an excellent chopper. A long handle gives you an emergency spear!

I love my old Old Timer knives. I've got their big two blade model with the 1095 carbon steel like they use to use. I've got a couple of their smaller knives too and an old Craftsmen stockman model that I'm pretty sure they made as well in the good old carbon steel. It's one of my favorite carving knives. I've got more than a few spendy knives but the Old Timers from way back are still some of my favorites. The only way they are lacking is they don't have locking blades but I've never had one fold up on me. I'm 62 and when I was growing up they were considered top shelf knives. Most of their new stuff sucks imo. That's what's happens when big corporate companies buy out the old made in the USA companies it seems.

A knife is a tool. Tools can be used to make other tools. If you need to split something, use the knife to make wedges. Works like a dream and protects your knife.

carrying a folder without a lock is foolish. if you shut that thing on your fingers in the field youll be sorry ! i wont do it and ive been carrying using pocketcknives on a daily basis for 40 years. im sure you know how to be careful but some people will loose a finger or 2!

I always wished Buck would make the 110 with an added wood saw blade. They made the crosslock but that was a bone saw with a gut hook. I know Boker made one for a while but it was really pricey.

It is a great old skool knife like the buck 110. However because it doesnt have a lock back on it i would not use it to bore holes on the off chance that it might close up on your fingers if you put too much pressure on the blade. Which has happened to me in the past & ive been using knives for over 30 years it could happen to anyone. I will always bore holes with either a fixed or lock back knife never one without.

Ive got two of these. (Thought id lost the first one) i absolutely love them. Theyre fantastic crafting knives for most anything you'd need, and clean fish well. I use the spine of the saw as a scaler. The only downside with the new ones is the sheaths beltloop, if it can even be called one. Sewn on flat, and can barely get a piece of paper in there, much less a belt. The knife itself however, is fantastic. May need to clean the gunk out of it when you get a new one though, pretty gritty.

I personally EDC three cutting tools in my GHB; 1) Custom made Viking belt axe by HB Forge, highly recommend. 2) APO-1T knife, mostly because it looked cool and supports the channel. 3) A prototype “skinner” made out of titanium, use stainless steel replaceable scalpel blades, attached with bits for bow-maintenance. Forgot who made it but, it was a prototype and I don’t think it’s a production model. I also have a #10 surgical blade on my titanium keychain carabiner thingy, replacement blades in pack. I think I have enough blades but, I’m also a male so…enough is never enough when it comes to certain things…like knives. 😂🤷‍♂️

@@BLACKIETHOMAS we “tested” it behind the firehouse a few years ago; Chopped cinder blocks, chopped through a regular apartment door, cut through the roof of an old Camry and even pried open a regular shipping container. Took it like a champ and, after some TLC, still looks new. That is exactly why I carry it in my pack, never know when you need to chop a hole in a wall etc. 🤷‍♂️ EDIT: Because I don’t know how to spell.

Nicely put. I have two folding hunters. One is an old Ka-bar and a newer model from Rough Rider that does just as good of a job. Most of the time I carry a folding trapper or a large Stockman. My father used a regular size Barlow for everything except large animals. Most don't realize how old the Barlow is or that it was George Washington's prefered style of folding knife.

Sorry, but if it was a choice between this, and my Victorinox Hiker, there's no comparison, imho, the SAK is so much more versatile,.. For a single blade folder, the Spyderco Military, is unbeatable.. Just my 2 cents.. ps, I'm not a "hunter" and I don't cut up freshly killed animals,,

Have the slightly smaller Buzzsaw Trapper which is a slipjoint blade and locking saw. I really like it and it's very useful. I did not know there was a bigger version with a locking hunting blade and saw. You become accustomed to having something on you you can get close to the work with, it's just easier in the long run.
