Back in the 80's some sailboat yuppies loved to show off that they could afford to have expensive boats. They didn't know how to navigate with nautical charts, so they followed the coast lines (the best that they could) and as soon as they hit a harbour they anchored up and visited the nearest coffee shop or some such to get a little paper bag or similar that might reveal in which port/town they were. In Simrishamn - a town where I grep up - they did understand this, and Thulins Konditori printed GPS coordinates on their paper bags to "help out" the amateurs of the Baltic sea. You have a lot more talent, and a lot more skill, in reading your road book and finding out where you are, or where you should be.

Thanks V (If I heard you right in the video). New to your channel and love your informative style. We don't do a lot or rally racing here in the US but I'm just starting the process of learning and looking into kitting up my old KTM 990. Your walkthrough answered a bunch of questions, thank you. BTW...no need to apologize for "looking a mess" trailside. :) Be safe out there and Cheers from the mountains and deserts of Utah.

Thank you so much! Yes, you heard right-V it is! So glad you found the walkthrough helpful, especially as you’re starting to kit up your KTM 990. Rally racing can be such an adventure, and Utah has some amazing landscapes for it! And haha, trailside ‘mess’ is all part of the fun, right? Stay safe out there and enjoy the journey! Cheers from across the pond! 🌍 and thankful for taking the time to comment and say hi

Oh, I recognize that style of mapping from back in the day doing road moves. We called them "control points" on our route guides (pre-GPS days). I still use a variant even now when I write out directions to various new locations onto index cards.

What tips would you give about rally riding etiquette (if there are any)? What level of technical riding difficulties will you encounter, is there a level indicated when a rally is advertised? What rallies would you advise to a beginner (I'm Fr based mostly but GB is fine too, or nearby in europe)? That's all for now, thanks! 🙃

Great content. Just entered my first amateur rally (Open Roads Rally in Victoria, Australia). The kit will be far simpler - we're using a smart phone road book app. For the new riders, would be really helpful if you could run us through some turn-by-turn navigation examples and troubleshooting advice. Advice for back-tracking etc (?).

Hi Vanessa Love what your doing especially on all the adventure bikes I noticed there is 2 different types of Dakar navigation paper and digital what are the different rules and when are you only allowed to use paper and digital?????🏍️🏴🏍️🏴🏍️🏴
@TheGirlOnABike Жыл бұрын
It’s more than paper is what we’ve been using and the organisers are slowly switching over to digital. For cars it’s already there but bikes it’s hard for the durability and reliability on handlebars

Hey Vanessa. What's the difference between Liasons and waypoints? I've only ever ridden roadbooks as one continuous stream of tulips and worry I may be getting penaly points unessecarily. Keep up the good work.
@TheGirlOnABike Жыл бұрын
Liaisons are untimed parts of the race, for example travelling from the Bivouac to the start line. Waypoints are specific locations on the course that you must pass through during the race. 🙂 I hope that helps and thanks for watching yey!
@mikep.93712 жыл бұрын
Vanessa, what is the penalty for missing a way point, in the Six Day rally in Baha it was 20 minutes for each way point missed? Waiting for your next race sequence. Hope your weekend was a good one.
@TheGirlOnABike2 жыл бұрын
It tends to vary by race and event. In this one it was more about the points you did get for hitting a waypoint, so the more you hit the better the score.

Why are roadbooks still on paper rolls, Vanessa? Wouldn't a digital version work better? I like your statement: Don't ride faster than you can navigate. Günter/Nürnberg
@TheGirlOnABike2 жыл бұрын
haha that's a good point....so technically the industry is moving to a digital roadbook but for bikes it's a little more complicated due to how vulnerable the roadbook is on the handle bars, also the light to be able to see the screen in different lighting. I think it's going to come and we're close but for now the paper and duck tape wins
@enduromotorradtouren2 жыл бұрын
@@TheGirlOnABike Ah yes, you're right. I forgot about the bright sunlight on a large screen. And its dependency on electricity.
